Publisher's Summary

On a calm night off the Florida coast, a fishing boat vanishes without a trace. Something deadly is hiding in US waters, and the Navy brass would rather bury the truth than face it.

It's Montgomery's war now. Brash and unconventional, Mike Montgomery is hardly regulation Navy. At his side, Diane Martinson, the Chief of Staff's wife - smart, tough...and his lover. Under his command, the USS Goldsborough - a World War II-era destroyer thundering toward a showdown of water and fire.

With the arrival of P. T. Deutermann-retired Navy captain, former arms control negotiator within the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and ex-commander of at destroyer squadron - today's naval thriller just climbed to a whole new level.

Just another great story from PTD - well performed.

Great story line - drama building - characters you can actual see through the words. Completely far out - AND completely believable. Characters you can love, hate, loathe - like a game of table tennis going from one side to the other.
Want to visit Florida to visit the scene of the action.
If you don’t believe my review - read the book, then tell me I was right!

Great book

A little slow at parts, but it makes up for that the last part of the book. Though a fiction writing, it is both very believable and possible. That is scary, real scary. Best way to describe this book- one hell of a book. I have never rated a book like this before.
I won't give it away, but how the book ends is how a lot of bureaucracies and corporations do business, which is very dishonest. Want some examples? The Ford Pinto gas tank problem in the 90s, Toyota, U.S. S. Iowa explosion, and many many more. Still happens to this day.
By the way, I stayed up to 2330 one night listening to this and had to wait till the next day to finish. Enjoy!

Way too much pillow talk

The pillow talk was boring and added nothing to the plot. Ruined an otherwise good book. Surprising from P T Deutermann. I used to anxiously await a new book from him, now not so much.

Interesting but superfluous verbosity

I really enjoy the work of this author but was disappointed with the excess verbiage in this one. The editors should have cut at least 30% from the book. It became even worse in audiobook format. The romance section was quite juvenile for these particular protagonists. The details of ASW were interesting and the characters were developed. It was just too long for the actual material.

Starts off slow.

Started off slow but finished with a bank, lots of bangs. I love my navy but the political guys can drive you crazy.

Great Storyline

A very good book to listen to from start to finish! Some imagination is needed but anyone who served aboard a Submarine should enjoy this book.

Good, BUT

Could have done without the marital affair over dramatics which took away from an otherwise interesting premise

Deuterman's best.

This is the best naval novel since The Hunt for Red October. I loved it.

What a voice

The love interest Is described as this vivacious beautiful sexy woman! However, when you hear her voice you think that it’s an old lady like 90 years old. It was laughable
