Story
The story of the Highland clans of Scotland is famous, the names celebrated, and the deeds heroic. Having clung to ancient traditions of family, loyalty, and valor for centuries, the clans met the beginning of their end at the fateful Battle of Culloden in 1746. Alistair Moffat traces the history of the clans from their Celtic origins to the coming of the Romans; from Somerled the Viking to Robert the Bruce; from the great battles of Bannockburn and Flodden to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Risings; and from the Clearances to the present day.

The sheer importance of Sumerian culture in regards to world culture as a whole is impossible to overstate. This civilization is single-handedly responsible for some of the most major innovations in nearly every field relevant to maintaining a civilized society - this includes religion, lawmaking, architecture, schooling, art, literature, and even entertainment. Naturally, most of what we see as negative aspects of society were established in ancient Sumer as well. There wasn’t an aspect of Sumerian life that wasn’t plagued with corruption or devastation of one form or another.

Focusing on key moments such as the Battle of Bannockburn and the Jacobite risings, Moffat also features other episodes in history that are perhaps less well documented. From prehistoric timber halls to inventions and literature, Moffat's epic explores the drama of battle, change, loss, and innovation interspersed with the lives of ordinary Scottish folk, the men and women who defined a nation.

Publisher's Summary
Did you know that the Scots never won a battle when they were favorites?
A sense of poetic irony registers when one learns that Scotland has never won a major military battle when the odds were in their favor. In 1513, the largest Scottish army to ever invade England was defeated by a significantly smaller English army at Flodden Field. In only two hours, the Scots lost 10,000 men. History repeated itself in 1542, when a Scottish army of 15,000 men was defeated by only 3,000 English soldiers. Despite their much smaller numbers, the English managed to take 1,200 Scottish men as prisoners. This humiliating defeat eventually contributed to the demise of King James V.
This captivating history audiobook takes you on a remarkable journey from the earliest extensive historical record of Scotland through the long struggle toward nationhood, all the way to postwar Scotland.

Men are described by their actions, women by their looks. There is a chapter about feminism, but it sways back and forth about what women can and cannot do. Over all it is a great read if you are a white male.

Well written, very detailed, and covers Scotland's history from the formation of the island up to the present. A fascinating story told with humor and gusto. Wanted to like it...
For the content, It starts by telling a quick paced recap of Scotland’s early king’s and rulers. While not comprehensive it is at least interesting. I did find that there are big sections missing though. No real mention is made of the clan system that ran the local regions. There are many interesting stories of warring clans from different regions and clan loyalty conflicts that are very interesting. While this quick history can not afford to tell those stories I did expect a mention of the system to spark further interest. Nor was there anything about the Jacobite uprisings which, agree with them or not, the fallout from the loss of the last one is big in Scottish cultural history. Nor any real mention of the highland clearances which again is very big in Scottish cultural history, and the reason my wife’s family line left. With missing sections like that I found myself not trusting the book and wondering what else was missing.
While the narrator may be very good at other readings I found his reading to be very calming and soothing and almost monotone which on a book like this means it becomes very easy to tune out. Pronunciations of Scottish words like city names was inaccurate to how you would hear them pronounced in Scotland and would earn a traveling tourist a good chuckle when they repeat them. Furthermore the short sections where an accent was used to read a letter or news article or such it was comical to me and perhaps offensive to a person from that region.
Lastly there are editorial mistakes in the book. Twice I heard a miss-spoken word, the reading stopped and the sentence started again. And couple of times I heard the same sentence twice like it was two takes poorly edited together.

Scottish History - Look elsewhere
The content of this history may have some merit, however the narration is abysmal. I persevered for half an hour but found that I was listening to the ridiculous pronunciation rather than the content. Avoid, especially if you are Scottish and cannot bear to listen to your country's cities and names being expressed in a peculiar American accent - with clearly WRONG pronunciation. It drove me mad!

Dull as dishwater, and an American who is unable to pronounce any of the Scottish place names. I suppose it is ok for the American market, but it’s totally on suitable over here; simply dreadful. Whilst the story being told was very good, the narrator just didn't fit and too many incorrectly pronounced city/town names. This would be a far better experience if narrated by a Scot.

Dreadful Narration
I cannot believe this excellent book was narrated in the way it was. Totally ruined it for me. Why not have a Scot read it? At least then place names would have been pronounced correctly - there is no such place as Skatland as it was being pronounced. Nor is there an Edinburg or Ber - wick . I live in Edinburgh! Very disappointing.

I was surprised to hear that the New Model Army was led by Thomas Cromwell rather than Oliver Cromwell. THE Thomas Cromwell?! He’d been dead for a hundred years. I know he was a very capable man, but I don’t think even he would be capable of commanding an army from beyond the grave....

scholarly but seems a little biased
Nice summary of Scotland's history but the author's prejudices leak through. He apparently dislikes Christianity, and certainly must be an atheist. God isn't responsible for human behavior. Too bad he has to call characters from the past names such as "bigot", etc. It's one thing to pen the history of Scotland, and I appreciate the effort this would have taken. But spare us your judgmental opinions. And on a different "note" - there isn't one mention of the contribution of bagpipers to Scottish history, or even a reference to the musical instrument of Scotland.

Disappointing
I found it rather disrespectful to hear the narrator mispronounce Scottish names and places over and over. You hired an American voice over talent for a book about Scottish history and then didn’t bother to proof the recording before publishing. Incredibly lazy.
