When he makes his first combat drop, or cherry drop, he’s a know-nothing second lieutenant added to the mission roster as an afterthought.

Publisher's Summary
What could test a marine more than all-out war? The Scourge.
A simple distress beacon....
A mining colony in the outer reaches....
Supposedly another routine deployment for Mike Barton of the Combined States Marine Corps, but what they find on the surface is unlike anything anyone had ever encountered.
Horribly wounded in a battle with an unknown quantity, Barton only survives through a chance encounter with two special operators. As if the skirmish wasn’t enough, what comes next will be beyond his imagination.
Thrown into a joint task force with troops from the New Russian Confederacy, Barton must return to the colony, face what had be-fallen him there, and investigate what killed everyone.
The investigation will have to wait because the Scourge won’t. The fight for his life continues and his chances are slim.

craptastic trash.
This book is just a cavalcade of fail.
the story is the most banal, slow, and just borring of "Space Odessy" type. everything seems drawn from finding some drunk POG and listening to them bitch about everything.
the narrator has zero inflection, an issue common with them, and i wish to god amables would just let me blacklist authors and narrators so i dont accidently purchase their wet fart of books and performances. the guy has less going then ben stein repeatedly saying "Beuller? ... Beuller? ... Beuller?" ad nauseam. his accents are like he took reading lessons from a 15 year old doing a school play after getting hit in the face with a fast ball.
the characters are poorly written and 2 dimensional flotsum that stumble along til things happen, and the action scenes are written like shit as well.
to fuck with this book, writer, narrator, and anybody who gives this trash anything more then a disgusted sneer.

Pretty darn good..
This was a pretty good read about a territory war between the US and Russia in space. Some good
battles, right along with some snarky remarks between our hero Michael Barton and Aleksander Komarov, the leader of the Russians that were supposed to be at a truce with the US, to only try to kill all of the team. But, hey! The MC's were easy to remember: Michael Barton, Michael Anders, and Michael MacMillan. LOL
No romance and the F-bomb was used 153 times.
As for the narration: Hmmm! It was just alright for me. James Patrick Cronin has a good reading voice but doesn't have much emotion when he reads the story. Time and time again someone would be in battle and yell something to another and all Cronin would do is read in a normal voice. That's not good preforming to me.

Awesome
Really enjoyed this one and the humor was good but this definitely gave me some mass effect vibes also the changes of POV between the characters was great since it mainly focuses on the MC but when it changes it's to give you what's going on behind the scenes or at another part of the battlefield, can't wait for the next one!

a realistic depiction of the military.
as an usmc infantry vet, nothing turns me off faster than a book than over the top with nonsense, when it comes to basic details, as if dudes in the fleet are running around at parade rest at all times screaming yes gunnery sgt! For the love of God, this book isn't that. Another great detail is how the mc acts around high speed dudes, which is awkward. funny enough that's how we act around them. because while we do know a little more about them than the average civ, that's still not much and top tier dudes are pretty awe-inspiring to us lowly grunts. but like my first point it's not written over the top. overall very well written. I'll be reading the next book.

Classic gritty DCF
Scourge set the scene for what promises to be yet another thrill ride from DCF. As expected the characters a tough, humorous and credible. The plot is pacey and as always keeps me hanging out for the next instalment
