It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. Publisher's Summary
The Little Mermaid takes a twisted turn in this thrilling sequel to villainess origin story Sea Witch, as the forces of land and sea clash in an epic battle for freedom, redemption, and true love.
Runa will not let her little sister die. Alia traded her voice to the sea witch for a shot at happiness with a prince who doesn’t love her. And his rejection will literally kill her - unless Runa intervenes.
Under the sea, Evie craves her own freedom - but liberation from her role as sea witch will require an exchange she may not be willing to make.
With their hearts’ desires at odds, what will Runa and Evie be willing to sacrifice to save their worlds?
Told from alternating perspectives, this epic fairy-tale retelling is a romantic and heart-wrenching story about the complications of sisterhood, the uncompromising nature of magic, and the cost of redemption.

First book was great, this didn't hold up.
The first book in the series was good, this was slow moving. It never really picked up until the last hour and by then the story and characters were too boring to care.

this was annoying to get through
The book took forever for me to get through and I'm still not done. I just hit my breaking point and lost all interest in this book. she kept describing all types of feelings over and over again in the most lengthiest description that the book became more about her inner thoughts than the actual story.

This was just amazing. I was fully immersed into this story, just as the one before it. The narration was perfection and I really do not believe it could have been done better. I am sad that it is over, but very satisfied with the end of this enchanting story. Loved it and will recommend.

Terrible sequel
I was surprised to have enjoyed the first book, but this one was a fail. All the problems of the first book came back and were even bigger. Plot line completely unrealistic, motivations of the numerous people laughably improbable.

Not entirely satisfying, but still recommended
Somewhat lacking in emotion, this book hovered on the edge of pulling me in. It just never quite got there.
The big confrontation at the end felt a bit lacking. I was really hoping there would be a big battle where the two stories truly collided, but the separation between our heroines was just a bit too much to make the ending altogether satisfying.
I didn't expect World War I to appear in this book, I'll be honest. It added a lot of extra complications (obviously), and I'm not sure it actually enriched the book. It did pull me away from the magic and immersion though, but that's not surprising as alternate history isn't typically something I read.
Whaling ships and trawler nets could have easily replaced U Boats and sea mines, and the story would have been just fine.
The budding romance was alright. It was just kinda there. It didn't develop as I'd hoped it would, so it didn't pull me into the book as it could have.
Regardless, Evie and Runa's journeys toward freedom and their own voices are worth the read.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and the production quality was certainly there. I'm just not sure what the point was in hiring two separate female voice actors. It didn't really add to the experience.

Unusual and Brilliant
My first impression was admittedly not great. The voices I have the readers here are less perky and a bit dark as well. That, along with the book having been written in present tense, was a slightly off putting.
Give it a few chapters... soon you will begin to see those as perfectly complementary and maybe even essential to the telling of the story.
The Sea Witch refers to the first request bringer as “the little mermaid”, but this story isn’t about her. It’s about her twin sister trying to bring her back home during what I believe is meant to be portrayed as WW1 and takes a surprising turn in a direction I never would have imagined. It is so well done, a seamless transition from what do you think you are reading!
The depth of the main characters and unpredictable nature of this story are perfectly balanced and refreshing.
Many young adult titles are a bit to adult-ish for young teens or pre-teens who really want to dive headfirst into the genre, but not this one.
