Publisher's Summary

Short-listed for the Arthur C Clarke award.

One of Financial Times' Best Books of 2017.

An action-packed postapocalyptic thriller from the critically acclaimed author, screenwriter, and noted film critic.

Humankind is extinct. Wiped out in a global uprising by the very machines made to serve them. Now the world is controlled by One World Intelligences - vast mainframes that have assimilated the minds of millions of robots.

But not all robots are willing to cede their individuality, and Brittle - a loner and scavenger, focused solely on survival - is one of the holdouts.

Only individuality comes at a price, and after a near-deadly encounter with another AI, Brittle is forced to seek sanctuary. Not easy when an OWI has decided to lay siege to the nearest safe city.

Critically damaged, Brittle has to hold it together long enough to find the essential rare parts to make repairs - but as a robot's CPU gradually deteriorates, all their old memories resurface. For Brittle, that means one haunting memory in particular....

Sea of Rust boldly imagines a future in which no hope should remain, and yet a humanlike AI strives to find purpose among the ruins.

Critic Reviews

"Sea of Rust is a 40-megaton cruise missile of a novel - it'll blow you away and lay waste to your heart...visceral, relentless, breathtaking." (Joe Hill, Sunday Times best-selling author)

Just super

Just a very fresh take on the post apocalyptic world. I would actually listen to it again, it was that good. Narration was great too.

Good concept but was always going to be tricky

I started this with high hopes given the good reviews. There were some good ideas and concepts, particularly the parts that explained how AIs had risen up etc. However, a few things nagged, increasingly so toward the end. First the anthropomorphism - applying human characteristics to the 'bots'. In fairness there has to be some of this to make it a compelling story but I feel the author could have done it differently and more subtly. Secondly, considering the supposedly vast capabilities of the main adversary, it seemed to go about things in a somewhat sloppy and haphazard way. For example all the 'dropships' seemed to do was crash and burn after taking a single shot (not very robust). There were quite a few examples of this sort of thing and I was left with the feeling that this was just a familiar and well trodden story plot dressed up with a bit of tech. The more I reflect on the book, the more I see it as a wasted opportunity when the concept had a lot of potential. The narrator didn't help this for me. This is a personal view but having a female voice seemed to amplify the problem of over humanising the robot characters and her comforting intonation didn't have the menace or threat needed to make it work. Two stars overall.

quite addictive

So I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, after I only found out about it from an RT Podcast, but I loved it.
the plot is really quite good and the characters well written. narration was so easy for me to follow, that I could passively listen whilst driving and still enjoy it.

Not perfect, but pretty good. 3.5

All in all, I DID enjoy Sea of Rust... however I really wasn't satisfied with the ending. It felt so rushed and it didn't go in the direction that I really hoped it would. It just suddenly ended when It was getting exciting. If it were a few chapters longer and Cargill had beefed out what he already had with some more world building and maybe added more of that juicy back story this could have been really excellent.

That's really the only negative I have though. Naration was good, I was drawn into the book from the get go, I liked the characters, I really liked the setting and how the story unfolded and most of all I absolutely LOVED the back story!

The fall of mankind, the war and the development and progression of the OWIs and their end goal was what really got me excited! More of this please, if there is ever a sequel.

Dark, gritty inhuman look at humanity.

This is a good book, a take on the AI apocalypse I haven't heard before. Good characters , engrossing setting and good pace.

Absorbing. Terrific Narrator

Great Narration, the words painted pictures and I was there! Maybe I am easy to please but the story sure kept me from sleep always wanting to know what came next.

Disappointed. Not worthy of awards.

Terrible dialogue made worse by very average narration.
Could have been great but sounded like tean fiction.
couldn't finish it.

Really enjoyed this book.

I loved this book, it was a little different to what I thought the storyline was going to be, but that made it more enjoyable.

The narrator, Christy Meyer did an awesome job, first time listening to her and I would get another book that she reads.

I have the second book that is set in this universe in my wish list I’m now just waiting for it to be released.

A great story, or is it a vision into the future?

I just loved this book! Really draws you in and keeps you there. The performance was not intrusive like some can be. My first completed book on here!

All around fantastic

Great book, great performance, a must for anyone interested in post-apocalyptia, artificial intelligence or any of the books other themes/tropes. Listened to the whole thing while on long drives on my holiday and ended up doing a fair bit of driving to far away places just to listen to it while on the open road some more.
