Story
One rainy night, the unthinkable happens: Dylan Moran’s car plunges off the road into a raging river, his beautiful wife drowning as he struggles to shore. In the aftermath, through his grief, Dylan experiences sudden, strange visions: wherever he goes, he’s haunted by glimpses of himself. Dylan initially chalks it up to trauma, but that changes when he runs into a psychiatrist who claims he’s her patient. Publisher's Summary
International Thriller Writers Award-winner and best-selling author Brian Freeman has established himself as a master of psychological thrillers. In Season of Fear, Freeman returns to the sun-drenched beaches of Naples, Florida, and the idiosyncratic world of Detective Cab Bolton.
Attractive and popular politician Diane Fairmont is running for the Florida governorship, but a chill is cast over the campaign when she receives an anonymous note announcing the return of the assassin who killed her husband 10 years earlier. Because of complicated ties between Fairmont and his mother, movie actress Tarla Bolton, Detective Bolton is assigned to the case.
As Bolton struggles to penetrate the veil of secrecy surrounding the Fairmont campaign, he begins to realize that the death threat is not the only danger faced by the campaign staff. A desperate race against the clock ensues as Bolton tries to unlock the secrets of a poisonous conspiracy before nature provides the perfect cover for a long-dormant killer to strike again.

Cab Bolton - brains, looks & $-who can ask 4 more?
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would. Why? Because it happens to be a good book with plenty of suspense and intrigue.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes it did. You really don't find out the whole story until the end. There are a few subplots that really could be a story by itself but mixed in to this story's main plot really adds to the twists.
What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Joe Barrett is an excellent narrator. I first heard him doing Brian Freeman's Jonathan Stride novels. Now I look for books that he narrates.
Any additional comments?
I have either read or listened to all of Brian Freeman's books and have enjoyed everyone. This character is different then the J Stride novels in that this character has quite a bit if sarcastic humor thrown in where Stride maintains his seriousness. I thoroughly enjoy his style of writing. This book moved right along at a good clip. I didn't find any lulls and that's always a plus. It's been a while since The Bone House and I'm glad to see this character reappear. I certainly hope there will be more of him and Stride. I gave this Five Stars all around and Highly Recommend, it's worth the time.

Many Twists and Turns
This is a great book of suspense with a number of twists that you don't see coming. While getting all the characters straight is a little challenging in the beginning, you're able to hone in to the key ones pretty quickly. If you like trying to figure out who the villain is, you'll love digging into this one.

Means justify the ends, in this case the epilogue
As in the first of this series (and this one can be a stand alone) the plot is twisted and full of surprises. Cab is "seduced" into a political malstrom that he must unravel before a hurricane hits. Again, Freeman develops characters that are fun to follow. Their flaws make them more realistic. This story is about dirty politics and dirty secrets that end up destroying lives. The ending makes no sense because the killer, who you are lead to believe is a vengeful serial killer, is not and in the end shows no guts to finish his life work. And then the epilogue...If it's a new PI series you are looking for, this is worth the credit.

Great Characters. Good Mystery
This second book, more than its predecessor, sets up the beginning of a really solid detective series. Its a great mystery revolving around a gubernatorial race in modern day Florida. Detective Cab Bolton's movie star mom is dead set on fixing him up with her best friend's campaign manager. She openly disapproves of LaLa, Cab's Cuban, detective girlfriend. So Cab is hired by his mother's protege to investigate threats, past and present on the life of a gubernatorial candidate.
I can't go into detail regarding the history without a spoiler, but a very talentedand ingenious, yet emotionally wounded young lady named Peach finds herself at the center of a string of murders, including that of her older brother and boyfriend. Her investigation leads her to Cab's door. During the investigations a very powerful and evil villain is exposed, but not dealt with. Its the beginning of a great new partnership.
So there's the hero, Cab Bolton, a great looking, 6'9" police detective with a famous, movie star mother. His girlfriend Lala, also a great detective. Peach, their sidekick.
This is going to be a fun ride!

Another winner
I think I preferred The Bone House, but this is quite good as well. This author is great at twists and turns. I am a bit lukewarm about the main detective character, (diamond earring, spiky hair, suits and corvette - Hollywood mother - meh) but there are interesting characters that make the books good. Narration is good. I'll be checking out more novels by this author.

Multi-layered and complex
Boy, did this turn out to be good!
I have listened to quite a few Brian Freeman titles in recent times and I am glad that I have discovered him. Prior to this, I have only listened to his Stride series and I dove into this with significant enthusiasm. I must admit that the first third or so of the book was difficult for me to follow. This is perhaps due to the fact that I was under pressure at work and was likely distracted when I did find some quiet time to listen. However, I think it is also due (in part) to the fact that the story is very complex with multiple characters, plot lines, and even some flash backs thrown in. As a result, I found myself having to revisit a chapter to remind myself of who did what, to whom and when.
Don't get me wrong! I am not saying the book was boring or unengaging. Nor am I saying that the author did not arouse and sustain my interest - far from it! There were simply many characters all vying for my attention and at first - until you get to know the different story lines - it can be a little overwhelming.
However, boy did this turn out to be good! I thoroughly enjoyed the really complex story - a whodunit wrapped in a political drama set against the backdrop of hush-hush family secrets and intrigue! I highly recommend that you give it a listen. The author did really well to keep all story lines logical and to bring each to a meaningful - if not always satisfactory - conclusion. As you would expect, surprises, plot twists, and mis-directions are there a plenty and you are going to be led down the wrong path quite a few times,
I think the author overplayed his hands a little with respect to age differences in the character and the impact of he passing of time - 10 years (no spoilers!) - on the development of characters and personality, but I suppose some liberties are allowed when you are an author. .
Highly recommend that you read this one, especially if you are looking for something that - at its core - is escapism but also a discussion and think piece.

Why why why do you ask this question! Don't most people get Audible for the audio?
Who was your favorite character and why?
Well, Cab, of course.
Have you listened to any of Joe Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
