Publisher's Summary
Discover the life-changing power of self-discipline.
Every year hundreds of young recruits join the US Marine Corps. When they arrive for basic training, they are soft, unfit, and mentally weak. The recruit will have no idea what real discipline means. Up to that point, he has lived a life of weakness. He has given into all his natural impulses and has feasted on junk food, surfed the Internet, and generally lived far under his potential.
Very soon, he will be thrown into a cauldron of discipline. He will experience for the very first time a life of control and power. When he comes out on the other side, he will be a new man. People who know these men will see a transformed person. This is the power of self-discipline.
In this book, you will learn lessons in self-discipline from the masters of self-discipline.The Spartans and the Special Operations community is the heart and soul of discipline. The Spartans don't exist anymore, but they left a legacy that still lives on today. The warrior tradition of the Spartans is built on a foundation of immense self-discipline.
The Modern Special Operations Units carry similar traditions of extreme self-discipline. Today, you can use these lessons in your life to carve out any future you want. This book will guide you through the most important principles of self-discipline. It will teach you how to take your life and transform yourself into a powerful individual if you choose to do so and take action.
Let's take a look at what you will learn inside this book:
- The science and psychology of self-discipline
- How to develop self discipline
- Self-discipline and freedom
- Improving focus and concentration
- Forming good habits and breaking bad habits

Someone watched 300
I wanted to like this book, but I found it very hard to get through. The concept is good, but the writing was chaotic and unprofessional. Verb tenses were inconsistent. The details presented as facts (at least regarding Sparta) made me feel like I was simply listening to what I learned from the movie 300, nothing more.
The author could have been much more effective had he separated the ancient warrior culture from the modern special operations training. It did not strengthen the argument at all by combining the two groups in the same paragraphs.
Great marketing got me to buy the book, I regret that decision.

This book has a good information, but the delivery is like sitting in a college lecture hall listening to a power point presentation. The author could have provided some background on where he received his information on special forces and the Spartans and how they develop self discipline. It's pretty bad, don't recommend. If you need help psyching yourself up to train for a marathon or something it might be of some value, but it's just so bad. Bad history. Bad advice. Bad psychology. No idea how it got four-five stars.

Spartans vs Athenians!
You can tell that this is a very well read author who knows his stuff and knows how to write to get the message across! In fact, I can't put Ryan's books down. I've listened to two of them in the last four days! This book is great because it provides a ton of real-life and actionable examples on how to be more disciplined as well as explaining the importance of why behind it! The analogies that Ryan uses are spot on to get the message across. I especially enjoyed the comparison of the Spartans to the Athenians and how the Spartans preferred results and efficiencies (function over form) where as the Athenians preferred more ornate housing and finer foods (form over function.) Great book Ryan. I can't wait to listen to the next one.

Sleep on the floor and don’t shower... and eat food off the floor.
While this book provides some semblance of history and a look into three lives of Spartans and Special Forces, much of the guidance in this book is nonsensical and doesn’t apply to normal life, or just doesn’t lend to the idea of developing mental toughness. There are several strategies that are plainly nonsensical, they have no end game in mind - they simply make you uncomfortable for the sake of being uncomfortable.
Take for example these strategies for developing mental toughness: take cold showers, sleep on the floor with no pillows or blankets, eat food off the floor, and don’t shower.
If you are a Spartan or Specials Forces, yes these make sense. You’re preparing for the potential of facing these types of things while in combat situations. But I’m assuming most people reading this are living much more normal lives. If there was a goal in these ideas then maybe I could get behind it, but the author literally gives no reason other than “mental toughness.” Is it really mentally tough to sleep on the floor and not shower or is it just a way to be uncomfortable?
I chose this book hoping for guidance in developing tools and strategies to become more steadfast in good daily habits. To be more mentally tough in idea of achieving goals. This book doesn’t lead you there. It leads you to something more like caveman toughness with no real personal development in mind.

Inspiring and motivational.
The content as far as story and useful information goes are fantastic.
although the reader wasn't that entertaining you do get used to it after a few easy moments.
The reader however did make it easier to listen due to good breathing habits etc.

Written by a 10 year old.
I would not recommend this. It’s just regurgitated quotes from other self help books without any understanding about them. There is no references. He quotes Spartan philosophy but then goes and makes statements like ‘spartan’s wouldn’t have taken a hot shower’ ... no $”$&@“&? No one had hot showers around 400BC.
The narration makes my mind feel like it’s getting a massage from swamp thing. It’s jerky and unconsidered although I suppose that may just we’ll be a side effect from having to read such mindless piece of drivel.
This book will inspire you but not because of its content but because you will realize that if someone can this published you can too. Apologies to all the 10 year olds out there.
