Making a permanent change often feels outright impossible. Making one attempt after another, you fail and continue to fail, and it seems there's no way to make the change stick for longer than a couple of weeks. Perhaps… except some people somehow manage to stick to their resolutions in the long term and their lives do get better - permanently. What makes the difference between those superheroes and “mere mortals”? More importantly, can the “mortals” acquire those superpowers, or should they accept that they'll never be able to permanently change their lives?

Publisher's Summary
How often have you tried to lose weight or start eating healthier simply to get frustrated and revert back to your old bad habits? Is this your first time to try, and friends and family are telling you how difficult it is? What if I told you there are things that can make it easier than you think?
Learn how to get permanent results while eating what's good for you and feeling more satisfied without totally giving up the foods you love.
In this book you'll learn:
- How to overcome (or completely remove!) the most common obstacles that can make or break your diet (like being hungry while you're on a diet)
- What daily habits contribute to setbacks and how to replace them with better alternatives to design a healthy lifestyle (just one bad habit can add more than 500 calories a day to your diet)
- How to deal with cravings and temptations (including a morbid but extremely effective mind trick)
- How to like healthy foods as much as, if not more than, unhealthy foods (it's all about making small changes)
- How to increase satiety to stick to your diet (the right foods can be up to seven times more satiating)
- And how eating healthy can be actually cheaper than eating off a fast food dollar menu (it can be a money-saving technique, too)
In this book you won't find the gimmicky "well, duh" tricks so many dieting fads say are the secret to weight-loss. In fact they aren't tricks at all. The tips in this book are scientifically proven (and supported) strategies and tools to lessen the burden on willpower and help you finally reach your weight loss goals.
You want to change your life for the better. Together we can help you shed those extra pounds - and keep them off - while shifting your view away from short-term frustrations to long-term results and lifelong health.

Mixed Feelings / Ok if you like his other stuff
If you have listened to other stuff by Martin Meadows and like that format, you are not going to find anything new here. In my opinion, I would take his other works on Self-Discipline and apply those principles to eating a more evidence-based nutrition plan.
This book might get you motivated to eat right, but if you are uneducated on nutrition, after reading this book, you will just be a motivated and uneducated person on the subject.
Read Meadows for Discipline, not nutrition. I like his strategies for using a journal, scheduling your cravings and the instruction to stay away from emotional eating. Don't get me wrong, this is written in an easy to understand manner. I just can't recommend the particular nutritional advice. For the absolute best in updated nutritional advice, I would recommend reading "How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease" first then read this book for self-discipline.
Disclaimer: I was given this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.

Good collection of strategies for weight control
What made the experience of listening to Self-Disciplined Dieter the most enjoyable?
It is a subjective matter but hearing a self-help book is generally easier than reading it. Since the tone of the writing is somewhat conversational, listening to the audiobook is like listening to a friend or colleague recount his experiences (if only the narration were better).
Who was your favorite character and why?
This question isn't really applicable to the book. It was good to hear of personal experiences, though.
How could the performance have been better?
The narration could have been more conversational, without the odd pauses. Also, a more common pronunciation of "kcal" would have been good (even saying "Calorie" would have been fine since Americans tend to use Calorie = kilocalorie.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This question isn't applicable to this book.
Any additional comments?
This audiobook provides a nice collection of strategies for maintaining discipline and willpower for weight control. The author does not claim to be an expert in these matters but does collect results from several different studies, as well as his own experiences. Do not expect anything truly novel--think of this more as CliffsNotes or Schaum's Outlines, basically a summary of many different key points. The strategies range from easy to challenging. For example, he suggests that people who are just starting to develop self discipline begin by simply adding a serving of vegetables to a meal, making that into a habit, etc. At the challenging end, he suggests that people who are healthy take occasional fasts to strengthen their willpower and to rest their digestive systems. It is unlikely you will like all the ideas in the book, but it is very likely that you will find something useful, even if it is just a reminder of something you had read or heard before. Some points are repeated almost redundantly but there is relatively little fluff in the book. Since the book is short, it is easy to go through for some quick inspiration or to help pick yourself up after slipping from your resolutions.
I generally prefer listening over reading for this type of material, but the narrator was a bit weak here. He had odd intonations of the sentences, with pauses in unusual places. He also had the weirdest pronunciation of "kcal" that I have ever heard ("keel" instead of "kilocalorie"). I found the narration less distracting at 1.25x. Although somewhat annoying, the narration did not truly detract from the content of the book.
The audiobook is relatively short (under 2.5 hours) and inexpensive, so I would recommend buying it instead of using an Audible credit. I received this audiobook im exchange for an homest review but I have purchased other books from this author.

tips and tricks
I thought this book was going to be around how to build self-discipline as the title indicates. It is clear to me that the person who wrote this book has never struggled with more than 10 or 15 pounds if that. the basic strategies include not buying unhealthy foods and denying your cravings. or postponing giving in to your cravings for 15 minutes. there's lots of very generic advice around getting enough sleep and getting enough exercise but no strategic plan for developing self discipline. the only interesting nugget from this book was a website called nutritiondata. Self.com save yourself $5 and just go look at that website

Way too monotoned for the material
So I finally decided to really listen to this book after having it sit in my library for so long and say it’s somewhat disappointing. The narration is as monotoned as you can get, but when your reading this type of material, that will lose the reader- I find myself continually having to go back and reread chapters. I also find his writing to be somewhat condescending- he likes to convey information as if you’re an idiot for not doing what I tell you or I’m smarter than you so listen. Anyways, it’s too bad because behind the condescension is some really good material.

Waste of money
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you have never read a diet book or heard anyone speak about dieting
What do you think your next listen will be?
non fiction
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The dead pan style of reading did not help. There was no inflection in his voice.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I was very disappointed. There was nothing new here. There wasn't any real ideas on how to increase your self-discipline. "Remove unwanted foods from your house to avoid temptation". Really?
Any additional comments?
I guess I am qualified to write a book. To be honest I only got through about half before I stopped. It was so worthless I just couldn't go on. I figured it was more important to see how the wind was blowing dandelion seeds into my yard and watch them grow. Listening for another minute was so much more boring and countless

Nothing special
I got a few good things from it but like he says in the book he got the idea to write it while he was writing something else. Not because he is an expert in nutrition. That turned me off. I listened to it but it's just his ideas of what you should do. It doesn't explain any psychological issues you should examine as well.
