Story
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Publisher's Summary
From the ashes of the ancients, a cataclysmic new threat rises.
Born on a forsaken desert planet, Cole Shaw has two options - perish from starvation and disease, or enlist in the New World Republic’s armed forces. He chooses the military. For the first time, he thinks he has a shot at a better life. But survival is not guaranteed.
Leading an elite team of mech operators, he is deployed to a frozen planet called Ferrous where dangerous relics of a past war lurk beneath the ice and savage creatures prowl the barren wastelands. Scientists on Ferrous are chasing rumors of godlike technologies buried in the ruins of a long-extinct civilization. When Shaw and his team are assigned to protect the researchers, they face an unexpected, merciless new enemy desperate to stop them.
An ancient secret has been awakened on Ferrous. The deadly race to claim this terrifying power has only just begun.
Performed by Audie, Earphones, and SOVAS Award-winning R.C. Bray (Expeditionary Force, Galaxy's Edge, Hell Divers), Sentinel is a must-listen for all military sci-fi fans in search of their next great series.

A breath of fresh air
Mechs in space against ancient aliens? I was thrilled to start this book after reading the synopsis and hearing Bray was attached as narrator. Nothing against all of the comedic AIs but there are too many knocks offs and I like my space opera with more grit. Sentinel packed that punch. Great action, great characters, loads of real science, and Bray at the healm. Definitely 5 stars! Can't wait for book 2.

Top notch narration and entertaining story
Before you listen to this book you should know it’s a military sci-fi genre. Some of the other reviewers didn’t actuall read the synopsis or get the memo. So if you expecting a unique story with some altruistic platitudes you are in the wrong place. Now, if you want pacific rim in outer space then this is your story. You will get tons of action, gruff and war weary characters, various human factions, and yes, freaky monstrous alien things.
I think the univeree has potential, but I wouldn’t expect some new fresh take on the sci-fi genre. It also goes without saying that RC Bray is the primary reason I chose this book and he didn’t dissapoint.

Great read, eagerly awaiting the next installment
Wow, I loved this book!
I did struggle with the technical points, but my imagination took on the feel of Pacific Rim (very loose approximate I know!) but it helped me understand the tech..
R.C.Bray is my FAVOURITE reader, he has an amazing talent, Thankyou, I was gripped by about chapter 4!
Anthony J Melchiorri has a wonderful knack of making his hero's so normal, not loveable, almost under dogs and dropping them into fight of flight situations, and then making the villain so hated, your shouting at the phone!
I can't wait for the next installment.

Oh dear gads, how many clichés?
I struggled with this one even with RC Bray trying to work his magic. There are a few good ideas that do not get developed in a mature manner- it is clear some plot ideas are being spread ever so thin so that the author can try to spin out a series. So the pages are filled with the prtagonists getting in a big robot, to fight bigger robots, then gets in another bigger thing to fight a bigger thing and so on. All combat is only just survivable, risks are likely to kill but must be taken if not to die/lose planet/have WORST DAY EVAH yet somehow our hero is still alive etc etc and then there are annoying and pointless flashbacks. oh dear gads I will not be getting the next book in the series.

WoW
This book scratches an itch I didn't know I had. mecha and monster what's not to love, Melchiorri has a grate imagination and the book is written well if a bit overly dramatic with some of the dialogue. But the action is almost none stop and the tension in the final chapters is spot on, And once again R.C Bray brings the book to life with his excellent narration. can't wait for the next book.

Interesting concept but…
It felt like it was just constant bad news and impossible situations with no hope that somehow work out but still feels like more bad news . Take us on a roller coaster here, not just on a decent down down down.
Like I said, the concept is cool, but a little hope and a plan here and there might make it work better (for me).
RC Bray is amazing as always!
