Publisher's Summary

New military fantasy from the creator of Monster Hunter International, Larry Correia, and master of horror Steve Diamond.

The war between Almacia and the Empire of Kolakolvia is in its hundredth year. Casualties grow on both sides as the conflict leaves no corner of the world untouched.

Illarion Glaskov’s quiet life on the fringes of the empire is thrown into chaos when an impossible tragedy strikes his village. When he is conscripted into the Tsarist military, he is sent to serve in The Wall - an elite regiment that pilots suits of armor made from the husks of dead golems.

But the great war is not the only - or even the worst - danger facing Illarion, as he is caught in a millennia-old conflict between two goddesses. He must survive the ravages of trench warfare, horrific monsters from another world, and the treacherous internal politics of the country he serves.

At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Larry Correia is the Dragon Award-winning, best-selling author of the Monster Hunter International series, the Saga of the Forgotten Warrior series, the Grimnoir Chronicles, and the Dead Six series of military thrillers.

Steve Diamond founded and runs the review site Elitist Book Reviews, which was nominated for the Hugo Award in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He writes for Ragnarok, Baen, Privateer Press, and numerous small publications. He is also the editor of the horror anthology Shared Nightmares.

Capable writers produce soul-draining dystopia

No heroes, no justice, honor and courage are tools the evil use to exploit the naive... I feel like my time listening to this book has sapped any joy and happiness I could have had spending the time doing something, anything else. This bleak and soul-crushing conflict between not-WW1-Germany and not-WW1-Russia does not even have the golden linings of German efficiency or Russian romanticism to lighten the mood. This is the bleakest wasteland of story Larry Correia has ever produced, and it makes me rethink buying something just because he wrote it.

Great start to a new series

This is the starting point to a new series, and simultaneously introduces a new setting and cast, and lays out a lot of hooks for future stories. At the same time, it tells a satisfying, action packed story.

Looking forward to future installments.

A great new series from Larry!

Welcome to Steve Diamond to the big leagues, too.

An excellent new series from Larry, and his collaboration with Steve was HIGHLY entertaining.

This is set in an alternative universe WWI on a different world with magic based on Slavic folk lore and golems from the Kabalah and focusing on the alternate Russians.

Engaging story from start to close, and every major character is interesting.

This is a new reader for Larry's works and I have to say I'm very impressed. The only character voice I think he didn't communicate well was Natalia, which is a pity, but his performance everywhere else more than makes up for it. Each character has a unique and distinctive voice and their accents are always bang on appropriate for where they originate. This is a reader to keep, definitely, and hopefully he'll improve how he reads Natalia and she'll sound less "dry" (like she's got a raspy voice) and better reflect her beauty instead of her simply coming across as harsh.

Well done to all and sundry and I eagerly await the next entry.

Enjoyable

Really enjoyed this story. The characters are well developed and did not detract from the story. Enjoyed the narration as it met my expectations and added to the overall positive feel of this story.

Correia doesn’t miss!

Really loved this book! The narrator’s choice of character voices is sometimes questionable and he’s pretty wooden at the beginning but it didn’t detract from the awesome story.

I could definitely see Steve Diamond’s influence in the gruesome details.

The world is like a lot of my favorite worlds but different enough to be its own thing.

Military sci-fi fantasy at its best.

Really good!

Didn't really know what to expect. Bought it because I have liked Correias other stuff. Really enjoyed this. Good stuff.

The reviewer that talks about the ranks being Russian etc.... Um the country is a 'not-a-russia' if the ranks were 'english' someone would complain about that. As far as 'a lot going on' I completely agree. I never got bored and never wanted to skip anything in this. It's great.

Some reviewers don't like the reader - that's preference I guess. But I think he is good. Took a while to get used to him and had to adjust the playback speed. He's not Wyman or pinchot, but he's fine.

Larry knocks it out of the park again!

The story is fast paced, well written and very enjoyable. The characters are very realistic and their motivations make sense. Cast on a world roughly WWI level technology with a bit of magic thrown it shows just how brutal war was then.

And riding in human shaped mobile armor tanks powered by by the magic of dead golems is just so cool!

I can't wait for the next book!

Brilliant

It took a while for me to get into this book but I am glad I kept going with it. The longer the book goes on, the more engrossed I became until I was absolutely fascinated with where the story was going. It really was one of the most intriguing and original fantasy books I have come across in quite some time.

Set in another world where humans unwittingly crossed into generations ago and have settled there for so long that the old world has become almost a legend to them. The new world is dominated by two waring nations fighting after the magical secrets of a fortified city nation caught in the middle. The world is a take on tsarist/communist Russia, with all the authoritarianism, paranoia and propaganda folded neatly into a war story involving magical mechanised suits, golems and ancient fairy gods.

The characters develop nicely along the progress of the story and you truly begin to care what happens to them... even the bad guys. The narration is top class, with a variety of accents and tones to differentiate the various different characters. What sets this book apart is the action/war scenes... They are engrossing and entertaining.

A great read.
