Publisher's Summary

In his first book ever, legendary Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, one of Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”, opens up about The Doors’ meteoric career, his own darkest moments, and the most famous black eye in rock ‘n’ roll.

Few bands are as shrouded in the murky haze of rock mythology as The Doors, and parsing fact from fiction has been a virtually impossible task. But now, after 50 years, The Doors’ notoriously quiet guitarist is finally breaking his silence to set the record straight.

Through a series of vignettes, Robby Krieger takes listeners back to where it all happened: the pawn shop where he bought his first guitar; the jail cell he was tossed into after a teenage drug bust; his parents’ living room where his first songwriting sessions with Jim Morrison took place; the empty bars and backyard parties where The Doors played their first awkward gigs; the studios where their iconic songs were recorded; and the many concert venues that erupted into historic riots. Set the Night on Fire is packed with never-before-told stories from The Doors’ most vital years, and offers a fresh perspective on the most infamous moments of the band’s career.

Krieger also goes into heartbreaking detail about his life’s most difficult struggles, ranging from drug addiction to cancer, but he balances out the sorrow with humorous anecdotes about run-ins with unstable fans, famous musicians, and one really angry monk. Set the Night on Fire is at once an insightful time capsule of the ‘60s counterculture, a moving reflection on what it means to find oneself as a musician, and a touching tale of a life lived non-traditionally. It’s not only a must-listen for Doors fans, but an essential volume of American pop culture history.

Critic Reviews

“Doors guitarist Krieger riffs melodiously through the discordant and harmonious measures of his life and times with the band in this galloping, episodic debut.” (Publishers Weekly)

The Doors On Fire, Grounded & Transcendent!

I love this book! I met Robby Krieger 2x in Pittsburgh. He was as cool & real as he is in this story about his life with The Doors. I really dig this journey about his part in creating & performing The Doors’ music. I read both John & Ray’s book. I read No One Here Gets Out Alive too. And of course, I saw The Doors movie many times. But I think that Krieger paints the most realistic and complimentary picture of the frailty, humanity and genius of Jim Morrison. More than that, I think that Krieger also portrays John, Ray & himself in both humility & high esteem too. Finally, we get to hear Krieger’s full true story in stereo. Read & listen to it Doors Fans, you’ll dig it too. I love The Doors music. I always will. And I will always enjoy the story of The Doors legacy from 1965-1971 & beyond. If I ever run into Mr. Krieger in Pittsburgh again, near the Oakmont Tavern & Country Club, I’ll ask him if I can sing & jam a couple of his Doors’ songs with him, so I can be a part of the story too. 😎 Peace, Ruef

A Doors fan must

After all the Doors books, the movie, the documentaries, after all these years, it was a pleasant experience to hear Robby's life and career perspective in an wonderfully paced narrative presented genuinely in an easy to digest format.
The narrator was one of my favorite ever of an audio book.

great book!

for some reason i feel like THIS the most accurate depiction of the doors hayday and beyond. not that i have researched it more than the next guy. as it is depicted, kreiger seems like a cool hang. i can identify ( while not exactly) with alot of things he said due to playing in numerous bands over the years. seem like a grounded, interesting and humble guy. the kind of guy you'd like to have a beer with while playing 18 or just listen to him tell stories from the era where rock and roll was developing such numerous influential acts.

Hands down the best book on The Doors!

Robby Krieger is one of the coolest people left on earth! His stories are great! He has seen and done more than most people have a chance to in several lifetimes. Robby has a fabulous sense of humor about almost everything! I feel like his telling of the history of The Doors is probably the most accurate as he was actually there the whole time! He debunks plenty of myths and false lore and tells all without ego or greed getting in the way. He sees a positive in even the darkest situations and I laughed out loud many times at his mischievous adventures and take-aways. I recommend this book to Doors fans and anyone who’s curious to take a walk through a magical life in a magical time and culture that are gone forever.

Honest and factual

This book was exactly what I needed to read after being a doors fan for most of my life. Felt honest. Robby seems like a a down to earth good guy and I'm glad to have had the chance to hear his account of his time with the doors and learn about how he wrote songs, the things that inspired ideas for songs. Was nice to get to know him a bit more and learn about his own personal adventures. Highly recommend this for any rational person who is a fan of the doors and just wants to hear the stories without all the bs. He didn't hold back punches or sugar coat but he also praised and gave credit where credit is due. Enjoy!
