Publisher's Summary

What do I want in a mate? Absolutely nothing.

Silas Jones has no interest in getting a mate, fated or otherwise. At 22, he’s alone in the world...or would be without the quirky pack of desert homesteaders who’ve become his family. Who needs more than that? Not Silas. Everyone else can partner up and risk loving the wrong person; he’s not judging. To each their own, but it’s not what he wants for himself. Ever. Nope, Silas is quite happy being a lone coyote. Maybe one day, it’ll stop feeling lonely in the wee hours. Or he could get a dog.

Daniel Atkins never planned to add stalking his fated mate to his to-do list. But what’s a guy to do when his fated mate takes one sniff in his direction and turns the other way? He’s dying to get all the info on Silas, see what makes him tick and figure out why his mate is so skittish. But first, he needs to get his inner beaver to calm down and stop demanding they keep eyes on their omega.

If Silas is in danger, Daniel needs to be on guard. Hmm... Is it really stalking if he’s keeping a protective watch?

Return to the hills above Cottonwood, Arizona, where every shifter has a bit of special magic and the pack of homesteaders, preppers, and loners who are a lot nosier about each other’s lives than they’d care to admit. Because, no matter their differences, pack means family.

This 31k novella is the second in this short-listen series. This world contains mpreg, but won’t have a birth in every book due to the short timelines. Be prepared for side-splitting laughs, a few tears, shifter-on-shifter violence, and a group of people who know that family always comes first. Also, all the feels you’d expect from a Susi Hawke original.

An alpha to love and protect

Another wonderful shifter romance story by Susi Hawke who can always get her job done right. I have not read/listened the first book in the series but I was able to get into listening and enjoying the story with no problem.

What could go wrong when an alpha beaver shifter chases his fated omega coyote shifter? Silas Jones has never thought about finding his own mate one day. No, thank you, he’s perfectly happy being alone living with a ragtag band of his desert homesteader brothers whom he call a family. And Daniel never thought he would become a stalker stalking his own fated omega and scheming how to convince this lovely omega to trust him and become his mate. With his infinite patience abs love when Daniel finally win over Silas’ heart, the omega’s past came haunting him and threatening to destroy his current wonderful life. Daniel and homesteaders have to work together to protect the lovely omega Silas and give him his forever home.

Funny, witty, sassy and funny enjoyable. Susi Hawke has always written lovely shifter romances. This is neither short nor long with the perfect size of listening hours and Drew Becca did a great job narrating this story. Enjoyed it and looking forward to more stories in this series.

A beaver and a wolf?

I have to admit when I first started to read this book I was skeptical about how a beaver shifter and a wolf shifter dynamic could work as fated mates. Silas is an omega wolf who wants absolutely nothing to do with a mate fated or otherwise. But when his fated Daniel comes into town even Silas becomes intrigued. Daniel Took the time to prove himself to Silas and show he wasn’t just going to push his way just by being his alpha mate. He took care of Silas - even when Silas didn’t want to be taken care of and was there when Silas really needed it. I loved this book because we saw old friends from book one give a comical dynamic to the book as well as watching an alpha take old-fashioned tactics to woo his mate. The narration was fantastic and the narrator had the perfect voice to keep you engaged.

Silas & Daniel

Silas and Daniel may be fated mates, but after the tragedy Silas saw as a child he doesn’t believe in fated mates. No matter how much Silas tries to deny it, you can really feel their connection. Daniel is incredibly sweet and stands by patiently while really getting to know Silas and protecting him from the danger that has come back into his life. An overall sweet story that I really enjoyed with a wonderful narrator who enhances the story and the experience. I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy of this audio book

I wish I liked it more

Unfortunately, this story wasn’t for me. It took me pretty much the entire story to like the characters. I also didn’t feel any connection between Silas and Daniel. Oh, and Sandy… annoyed me most of the time.

I did like that they were different types of shifters then what I’m used to reading. I felt bad for Silas and what he experienced and saw as a kid. I also liked that Daniel had patience with Silas. There was one time that Daniel did something that made me laugh out loud and I found it very entertaining.

Settle for Nothing

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Review Copy of this book.

I had not read the first book in the series before listening to this one. I didn't feel lost, but I do think it would have been a little bit better if I had.

I could completely understand why Silas isn't interested in a fated mate. After what he saw as a child, that would give anyone some lingering issues. Daniel was so patient. Yes, he wants his mate, but he doesn't push too hard. He's not too domineering as an alpha, but still protective. Even for as short as this story is, there is a slow-burn feel to it. The narration had good pacing.

True mates

Sweet story about persistence, trust and family. I’ve liked how Daniel acts when he tries to woo Silas and how everyone works together in the pack.
The narrator accent was a bit difficult to understand for me, and sometimes I couldn’t distinguish narration from dialogue. Though despite of the accent the voices were quite good.

«You know what our bond means? You're not simply mine to love. You’re also mine to protect, mine to support, mine to encourage. However I can help you, I want to because it fulfills my own needs».

Great listen

Another great story from Susi Hawke. Daniel and Silas LOVED them!! Daniel was so sweet and I loved that he was willing to take his time with silas.
Silas doesn't trust easily, he doesn't want a mate but Daniel slowly woo's him and it was amazing to watch silas starting to let his guard down and let Daniel in.

Loved both the story and the narration!

The series is amazing! Daniel is the perfect alpha and it was so sweet witnessing how he protected and loved Silas until he overcame his reluctance and accepted true love. Their story is a perfect addition to the series. Now, Mr Bacca made a wonderful job with his smooth and charismatic voice, managing beautifully all the characters and situations. A great way to read and reread this lovely story!

Love is hard work

Silas hasn't had the best childhood so as a result thinks mates are for the birds.
Daniel just wants to love and protect his mate but Silas won't make it easy for Daniel.
As they get to know one another, Silas begins to realize true love is worth the hard work you put in and sometimes it's worth the blind leap of faith.
Once again with the author's books there is a definite turn for hilarious situations and found family.
Drew Bacca did an amazing job.

Don’t want a mate?

Silas is hardworking and a good shifter, but he has trust issues. Then Daniel comes along, his true mate but Silas still doesn’t want anything to do with a mate. Great short listen, good writing and well narrated.

Love this series

I adore this series from its setting, to its characters to its ability to be both light and serious at the same time. Silas is adamant that he neither wants nor needs a mate and when we know his story, that makes perfect sense. However, Daniel is irresistible and just what Silas needs. Daniel is persistent, but not in any creepy way, he's just always there to love, support and help. Drew Bacca was not perfect here. He captured both the lightness of Daniel and Silas and alsomthe darkness of Silas' past.

Has Years Of Distrust To Get Past.

MM shifter, true mates romance. An easy to listen to sweet romance with some peril to overcome. Silas a cougar shifter didn't have the easiest of childhoods and it's left him distrustful of love and true mates but now may be the time to learn to believe and trust in the fates as his mate has suddenly appeared in his life. Not the best of times as his past is about to reappear. Drew Bacca has done a great job of narrating. Second book in The Desert Homesteaders series, reads well as a stand-alone although I believe due to characters from first book being in this one it may be best listened/read in series order for full understanding and maximum enjoyment.
