A Classic Mystery with Wonderful Characters
- By Robert on 12-22-08
By: Stieg Larsson, and others
Publisher's Summary
Maia D'Apliése and her five sisters gather together at their childhood home, Atlantis - a fabulous, secluded castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva - having been told that their beloved father, the elusive billionaire they call Pa Salt, has died. Maia and her sisters were all adopted by him as babies, and, discovering he has already been buried at sea, each of them is handed a tantalizing clue to their true heritage - a clue that takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Once there she begins to put together the pieces of where her story began.
Eighty years earlier, in the Belle Epoque of Rio 1927, Izabela Bonifacio's father has aspirations for his daughter to marry into aristocracy. Meanwhile architect Heitor da Silva Costa is working on a statue, to be called Christ the Redeemer, and will soon travel to Paris to find the right sculptor to complete his vision. Izabela - passionate and longing to see the world - convinces her father to allow her to accompany him and his family to Europe before she is married. There, at Paul Landowski's studio and in the heady, vibrant cafés of Montparnasse, she meets ambitious young sculptor Laurent Brouilly and knows at once that her life will never be the same.
In this sweeping epic tale of love and loss - the first in a unique, spellbinding series of seven books based on the legends of the Seven Sisters star constellation - Lucinda Riley showcases her storytelling talent like never before.

Reluctant to continue the series
This book too me a while to get into – I think I was about half way through before I stopped telling myself “I might as well just finish it” and actually started to care about what happened next.
The series was recommended to me by my mother who loves it; I am not as enamoured as her. I HATED the basic premise, and found the jet-setting family just annoying and fake. I do see how it’s all manufactured in order to tell 6 very different stories that cover different parts of the world, but it all felt too contrived to me. Nevertheless I do like historical fiction, the characters grew on me after a while and family sagas are fun to read.
The reviews for the narration of volume 2 are terrible so I am not motivated to continue with the series – yet, never say never! Maybe I’ll add it to my wish list and just wait for a sale.

I Can't Believe I Just Found This Series!
I am a member of the largest Facebook Book Club in the world and I often read the posts to see what everyone is reading. I take their recommendations to heart and often times I will buy a recommended book. I am so glad I started The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley.
This story is absolutely brilliant. A very rich man who has adopted six daughters from all over the world dies suddenly and all of his daughters are brought back to their childhood mansion, called Atlantis. The girls are named after The Pleiades, or the Seven Sisters Star Constellation. Each sister has been named for a star, except one (there are only six sisters). When the sisters congregate to mourn their father they are each given an envelope with co-ordinates letting them all know where they were born.
The first story is Maia's, the eldest daughter. We are taken into a beautiful historical tale of life in Brazil in the 1800s where Maia's family began their lives, and we meet all sorts of characters who have been responsible for creating Maia's roots and her truth. The story is woven beautifully, it's extremely addictive, and it is filled with lovely prose.
The only thing I will say that I thought could have been much better was the Narrator. The Narrator was not good at all and didn't suit Maia's perceived voice. I just finished the second of the series and the narrators for the second book is even worse. I hope Lucinda decides to make another version with some good narration, because it's very off-putting.
Needless to say, this book is lovely and I am looking forward to hearing all of the books in the series.

Such a good book
For some reason when I purchased this book I thought it was about 7 witch sisters. You may or may not be happy to learn there are no witches in this book. Also once I got past that the person narrating the book is the same person from The Girl on the Train I was hooked. This narrator is actually pretty awesome. The story is amazing and it had twists I would never have guessed. I hate when it's obvious what's going to happen next. The writer leaves you with unanswered questions making you want to get started on the next book which I will be in search of as soon as I'm done here. Honestly you will not have any regrets purchasing this book.

4 Generations of Mystery and Love
This is the first book in a series that is about 6 sisters that were all adopted by an influential and mysterious man. This book focuses on the oldest daughter, Maia, who travels on a journey to find her heritage and ultimately finds unexpected clues to her family's past. It is a story that spans 4 generations and is a complex, deeply moving tale of love lost and found.
This is a wonderful story and is worth a credit if you want a nice change of pace from other historical romances.

Twists and turns
I basically enjoyed the book but found it a bit confusing. Some of the story lines didn’t fit as well as they should’ve. The narration was jarring at times and the ending of the story felt unfinished and unsatisfying. All that being said, I like Lucinda Riley’s writing and would read other books by her.

Real problems with the narrators in this series
Interesting premise for a series. I am currently on the third book of the series because of this. However, I find myself at numerous times throughout each of the books considering stopping the series due to the absolutely horrendous accents on the part of the narrators. Even though the narrators are different for each book (as each book is about a different sister), they are all really bad with their accents to the point that it is VERY distracting. The French accents are the worst. It really is too bad.

Lucinda Riley's writing keeps you engrossed. The descriptive scenes and story narrated by Emily Lucienne makes this a most enjoyable listen. Loved the accents. Can't wait for the next instalments.
