Story
All I want is to pay the rent and find a boyfriend. But an insane vampire thinks I hold the key to his takeover of the city, and I have a new stalker. At least for now, I've dodged the Illuminati's Hunters, but life is still a little too challenging. Rival vampire lords want to use me against each other, and the mysterious members of the Columbia Club are offering bounties for vampires and werewolves. I'm lucky that the gang at Rosie's has my back, because I'm going to need them.

When a jaguar shifter drops in and asks for help in tracking down an ancient blood-magic statuette, I say no thank you. I learned a long time ago the key to survival is keeping a low profile. But it's hard to ignore an artifact of the gods powerful enough to blow holes in reality. Enter stalker werewolves in a black Mercedes and magicians trying to capture me. They all think I know where the damned statue is. Then I'm attacked by demons. It wouldn't be so bad, but some of them are really rude. Being rude is a capital crime where I come from. Time for a lesson in manners.

Welcome to The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar. I'm Sam Quinn, the werewolf book nerd in charge. I run my business by one simple rule: Everyone needs a good book and a stiff drink, be they vampire, wicche, demon, or fae. No wolves, though. Ever. I serve the supernatural community of San Francisco. We've been having some problems lately. Okay, I'm the one with the problems. The broken body of a female werewolf washed up on my doorstep. What makes sweat pool at the base of my spine, though, is realizing the scars she bears are identical to the ones I conceal.

In a world of darkness where royal vampires are in charge, I spend my days working as a knight in the city formerly known as London. Instead of a lance and a horse, I rely on my trusty axe, Babe, and ride the occasional dragon. Every day, new threats emerge that require a dash of magic and a dollop of attitude. Naturally, danger comes with the territory. What no one knows is just how dangerous it is for me. If our vampire overlords discover what I am, they’ll execute me on the spot — no questions asked — which is why I avoid them at all costs. Until now.

For a decade, I’ve hated the supernaturals who owned my world. I hunted them. I killed them. And now, in the most grand twist of fate - I am bonded to one of them. Oh, the irony. Being a supernatural bounty hunter isn’t exactly a popular job. But after the magic wars, there aren’t many things a human can do that will put food on the table. Thankfully, anything my right hook can’t handle, my guns can. Or so I thought.

Publisher's Summary
When my magic manifested at puberty, my parents sold me to the Illuminati. The Order of the Illuminati trained me as an assassin, spy, and thief. But when they sent me to steal a magical artifact that reveals Truth in all things, I discovered that I was working for the Dark and not the Light. The Illuminati trained me well, and paid the ultimate price for their deception.
Thousands of miles away, I landed a job in a quirky little bar. But the scattered remnants of the Order still strive for world domination, and no one leaves the Illuminati alive.
Contains mature themes.

Poor Man’s Guild Codex: Spellbound
One of the other reviewers mentioned that the world building is ripped off from other stories. Not only is that true, it’s almost 100% a less well written version of Annette Marie’s The Guild Codex: Spellbound except the main character in this one has magic. If you want a truly enjoyable, engaging series about a woman who ends up as a bar tender at a magical pub by accident, I highly recommend that series instead; the first book is Three Mages and a Margarita and it’s much better written. Even if you liked this one, in my opinion, The Guild codex is better.

No spoilers
This is a hard book/audio for me to rate so here it go's. This is the first book in this series and I find with Kingsolver first book are a bit boring. The first half of the book was MC and world development it did however pick up at little after 1/2 way point and pulled me in enough to give the second book a try. The narration wasn't bad but wasn't that good I am a bit of a narrator snob. If you've ever listen to Lauren Fortgang, Nicole poole, Margarita Gavin to name a few you understand. However Dauer has a nice voice and dose the voices of the characters very well. The reading of the story was just reading. No emotion put into it. I can't fully say I highly recommend yet!!. But I will read/listen to the next in this series.

Good story once it gets moving
This book had a very odd, clunky beginning with the weird description of the Illuminati years. The story really doesn't begin, get moving or interesting until after that preamble is done. The main story is great as are most of the characters. The end is also a touch clunky, but not nearly as bad as the beginning.
The biggest problem of the book is the narrator. She really doesn't know how to handle the humor in the book and is too dry in many places. She also doesn't know how to add rhythm changes to accentuate mood or action. Hopefully she gets better or they get a different person for the next one.

Truly awful writing
I'm amazed that this was published, it's written the most bland way possible, so much "telling" it makes your teeth hurt! The author didn't even bother with a unique magic system, all the world building is ripped off from somewhere else with nothing that makes it unique.

Told instead of showed
This book is poorly written. Instead of creating drama it was flat from the main character having an answer for everything. There was no flavor or color. Where was the excitement, fear or tension? All are missing.

Illuminati
I like all books that are sci-fi or fantasy. Anything that gets me away from the reality of this world. The characters are very colorful and interesting. This book will be liked by teens up to seniors. I like the twist in the turns. But just as you think you might know who is the true bad guy Bam they send something else your way. Can’t wait to go to the next book in the series.

Fantastic Urban Fantasy
Loved it. Brilliant feisty strong female lead character, plenty of action, adventure, friendship, a little potential romance and an excellent overall storyline. The whole story was brought to life with the narration as was each individual character which made this audiobook a one sitting listen, I could not press stop and had to finish in one day. I really liked the concept of this story and look forward to listening to or reading the rest of the Rosie O'Grady's Paranormal Bar and Grill series.
