Publisher's Summary
In this factual account written with General Carl Steiner (Ret.), a commander who held responsibility for all U.S. Special Operations forces across all service lines, we get special insight into a largely secretive community whose members do not talk about their work. We hear about it only afterwards: the Achille Lauro hijacking, the "takedown" of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, the efforts to find Aidid in Somalia. These are men sent in to do the impossible - and often, they achieve it.
Critic Reviews
“Some action vignettes from [Special Forces] roots in WWII and Vietnam rival Clancy fiction.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“The plethora of insider history and firsthand operation specifics…will please the historically minded.” (Publishers Weekly)

Great book.
As usual Clancy has written a great book. The problem with it is that this is more an autobiography of Carl Stiner than a history of Special Forces.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the autobiography, but that's not what I bought the book for.
The other problem is Jonathan Marosz. He has an easy voice to listen to, but his pronunciation of military terms (USAREUR), place names (Huachuca is pronounced wah-chuca not haw-chuca) and common words (ruck sack not ruke sack) is annoying as heck.
I would expect a professional to do some research and learn to pronounce the military terms and place names. I would expect a production team to correct the mis-pronunciation of common words that happened throughout the book.
Overall this was a good book even if it wasn't what I expected.

At first the book was slow to get started but as you got into the lives of the 'operators' it made sense.
This was a nice way to find out about Military Operations that would not be realized without research.

Shadow Warriors
My Kingdom for an editor!
This was one of those very rare occasions where I wished I had bought the abridged version. The work is loaded with facts and information, as interesting as they may be, that bear little to no revelance to the topic of Special Forces. Sadly at times it seems that the book filters the role of the SF through the life and career of General Steiner, rather than General Steiner's life filtered through the role of the SF. Would a better title have been 'Shadow Warrior"?
Beside that, the book offers some thrilling moments and Jonathan Marosz delivers another great narration.

Time-Consuming Disappointment
I expected the story of SOF. Instead I got Carl Stiner's biography and a dictionary of military acronyms, but practically nothing about SOF deployments. This must have been written for the entertainment of Clancy's "Power Point Commando" buddies. It was NOT written for anyone seriously interested in SOF. Don't waste your time or money!

This is not a book with suspense and a plot.
This book is a audio documentary of the rise of special operations forces. Up to and including there roles in the recent Middle East operations. For what it is it's excellent, but it is not the Tom Clancy, your expecting.

Absolutely Awful
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If this was Tom Clancy writing this I would be amazed. Sounds like his name was added as an author to sell more books. Lots of boring facts and figures.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jonathan Marosz’s performances?
No
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Good book to listen to if you have insomnia.

Story Good, Narration sucks
The Narration of this book was extremely horrible. You never knew when a sentenced ended or a chapter ended. The Narrator continued to end sentence like a question. His inflection was just bad. Maybe, he should read the books, before he narrates them.

Good story but I found Jonathan Marosz inflections and tendency to end sentences as if they where questions a bit annoying and almost made me quit listening and read it instead.
