Publisher's Summary

Agatha Christie meets Jane Austen in this atmospheric Regency tale brimming with mystery, intrigue, and romance.

When Miss Rebecca Lane returns to her home village after a few years away, her brother begs for a favor: Go to nearby Swanford Abbey and deliver his manuscript to an author staying there who could help him get published. Feeling responsible for her brother's desperate state, she reluctantly agrees.

The medieval monastery turned grand hotel is rumored to be haunted. Once there, Rebecca begins noticing strange things, including a figure in a hooded black gown gliding silently through the abbey's cloisters. For all its renovations and veneer of luxury, the ancient foundations seem to echo with whispers of the past - including her own. For there she encounters Sir Frederick - magistrate, widower, and former neighbor — who long ago broke her heart.

When the famous author is found murdered in the abbey, Sir Frederick begins questioning staff and guests and quickly discovers that several people held grudges against the man, including Miss Lane and her brother. Haunted by a painful betrayal in his past, Sir Frederick searches for answers but is torn between his growing feelings for Rebecca and his pursuit of the truth. For Miss Lane is clearly hiding something....

Good balance

The mystery was engaging without being overly frightening. The love and respect between the characters was clean yet heart warming. The author tied up all the lose ends very nicely.

Wonderful story, fantastic narration

I loved every bit of this story. Julie Klassen weaves a story unlike most modern day writers, I feel. I love all of her books so far, but this one may be my favorite yet. Also, Elizabeth Jasicki is a fantastic narrator. She captures every character uniquely giving them all their own specific feel and sound. She can do male and female, young and old, rich and poor all equally well, with such a lovely melodic voice.

Perfect Combination

I read a previous comment that this story was Agatha Christie and Jane Austen come together... since they are my 2 favorites, I had to read it! I enjoyed it completely! The anxiety, the sadness, and of course the ending made my heart sing! I'm going to look for more from Julie Klassen!

"...it was definitely worth the wait."

Oh my! This was a twisty mystery with a bit of romance, drama and murder mixed in.
I loved the sightings of the Abbess and Rebecca's somewhat reluctant eagerness to follow her.
A bit wounded from his past, Sir Frederick was still a good hero. Strong, always there to help, and fair.
I enjoyed all the characters in this story, especially Rose.

Great story

I like many of Julie Klassen’s books. This was a good one. Her narrator was good overall but she could use some practice on the men’s voices. In order to speak lower, she seems to slow them down and makes them sound old and less smart. It does affect the quality of the men characters.

Perfect

Ms Klassen writes the perfect audible book. The stories are so good and the descriptions take you there. Ms Jaseki is a brilliant narrator. I am looking forward to her next book

Better ending than beginning

I found the beginning of this book to drag. I had to bring the speed up to 1.6 in order for it to keep my interest but it got better as it went along the ending was pretty good.

Mostly conventional Gothic romance

This is the second book by this author that I have listened to, and while there are few surprises,it is reasonably well written and mostly quite entertaining, but I may think twice before listening to another one. The author is apparently American and while she gets a lot of it right there are occasionally words that get misused. Likewise the narrator mispronounces once in a while, although she is certainly English. Last but not least, the front and center presence of religion, while probably appropriate to the time period, is just not my cup of tea.

New fan of Julie’s

Recently have listened to most of her books. I really enjoyed this one, the characters and all. I do like this reader, too. The only negative is it seemed longer than necessary, so fast forwarded with some repeated things.
