At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. Story
Drew Michalik was working in a top-secret facility in Washington, DC, when the Advent began. As all electronics in the world simply ceased to work, blue screens filled with information appeared before him. Drew was given access to a mana interface and a limited number of reality-altering crystals called Xatherite. Following the instructions on his vision-impairing screens, he "slotted" his Xatherite and changed his fate: He gained the ability to cast spells. Now alone in the dark, he must battle through the government bunker turned dungeon in a desperate bid for survival.

Story
For more than 150 years I've served the Kingdom of Sena. Through four kings and a queen. Two wars and a rebellion. I've founded and taught at a magic school. I've fought against beast waves and dungeon breaks. But now? Now, the one close friend I had left has passed. So, I'm done with their politics and their economics. The short and busy lives of humans are more burden than benefit on the weary soul of this half-elf.

With the advent of fully immersive virtual reality, however, that’s all going to change. A revolutionary new game - Chronicle - makes much bolder claims than the competition. Some say the World Law itself is broken and that the world is falling apart. In comes Sam Hastern. His family has been cursed by one of these classes for the last 50 years. No one has ever managed to level it, condemning them to the lowest paying jobs and life in a barren village.

Great even with a mid series narrator switch
The book was great. Love Nick Podehl as a narrator. The only issue I had(very tiny issue) was that with the switch of the narrator it took a chapter or two to get readjusted. Otherwise an amazing series so far. I hope it continues to be transferred to audio.

Bit of a tangent
This book has our hero's sister and friends playing main fiddle in this book. I liked it and was glad that I reread the last book, as it was quite a long time since I read a book from this series. A recap helped me to not be lost while listening to it. But also since it is following a whole different set of characters the fact that it had been a while wasn't a big issue. Still getting familiar with the lore again was helpful.

Characters having their voice changed
Unlike in novels where you can tell who is talking by reading, audio books can make each character's voice help tell them apart. But that's all meaningless if you don't keep them consistent. It sticks out even more when you listen to them back to back from 1st to last.

Pretty good
There’s a lot to like about this series. The premise, the characters, the chain quests, the NPC/Gods/Players relationships, and especially the personality and insights of the main characters Kirin & Max.
But the negatives are there too. The overwhelming number of epic items, unique quests, and overpowered characters. The same formula used book to book: player has doubts, gets confidence boost, faces impossible odds, something saves the day, player succeeds. Over and over.
Then there is the number of books, each around 10 hours, released every 3 months. Nine books - that’s over $100.
It would’ve been great to combine these into 4 books at 22 hours each. As it stands after book four, I don’t think another $50 is worth getting to the end, when I already have a fairly good idea how it’s going to develop. Maybe I’ll skip to Book 9 and read the ending. Idk.

I now know why this one took so long
I now know why this one took so long clearly the previous narrator/cast had other commitments or something similar but nick is a pro and did a great job could of been a confusing change but managed well the only issue I had was bon Bon was perfect now his voice and personality aren’t quite as good
