When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Publisher's Summary
Enlisting was his only ticket out.
Raised fatherless in a galactic Brinktown, Joe Pikeman only ever wanted to escape.
The Galactic Guard offered that escape, with the promise of regular meals to boot. Now Joe is a full Guardsman, with his own ship and a snide partner bot who hates humans almost as much as he hates other bots.
To the pirates he hunts, Joe is known as the Butcher. His bloody reputation has landed him in the center of a sweeping conspiracy that threatens to stamp out the galaxy’s last surviving human settlements.
As Joe races against time to salvage what’s left of his species, one thing becomes crystal clear: You can never escape your past.
It all starts on Earth, humanity’s deserted homeworld....

Scott and Mark marvelous again!!!
I absolutely love this series!! Scott Bartlett and Mark Boyett have, once again, delivered Military SciFi GOLD! The protagonist, Joe, “the Butcher” Pikeman is such a deep and memorable character that he pulled me in and had me feeling alternately, sorrow and anger for him!! Joe’s daughter is a memorable character as well, especially for computer folks! This is a really great work, and I would recommend it to any fan of military SciFi/Space opera!

Mind blowing sci-fi concepts
The scope of the shattered galaxy series makes you feel smaller in the universe with each novel you listen to.
The concepts are well researched and Scott’s writing shows great imagery and imagination.

A Great Story
I have listened to a lot of Scott's work over the years, and being able to just plug into a whole series of his without interruption is a truly priceless experience. Scott's approachable and endearing characters go through very realistic troubles, both external and internal, and mercilessly pull you into their well-developed worlds. All of this while giving us sci-fi nerds the realistic and well-researched future tech we so desperately yearn for. Well done sir, well done.

An epic fantasy adventure set in a scifi universe
Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this audio book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Scott Bartlett weaves an epic adventure from the edge of the galaxy to the core in an original narrative that is quite believable. Mark Boyett uses excellent acting to convey the voices of the different characters.
I really enjoyed this story. The author does borrow from other scifi properties such as "Ready Player One" and "Star Wars", but I don't see how the story could've been written without them. The protagonist faces boss battles that require such abilities. The story flows and the protagonist follows the clues to uncover a galaxy-wide conspiracy that is far older than he believes. I'm glad he didn't kill the dog.
Sadly, teenage daughters are teenage daughters the galaxy over.

Another amazing series by Scott
I've been obsessed with Scott's books since I first discovered them in March, and this series is no exception. Scott does an amazing job bringing you into the universe and developing his characters. Any fan or sci-fi should read this. Can't wait to read more of his books!
Mark Boyett does an amazing job narrating the books as usual, an excellent choice I'm happy to see used in all of Scott's books that I've listened to.

Totally worth one credit or even three.
Although I had already purchased these books on Audible I received a free copy of the boxed set recording which is nice because I don't have to search for the individual books.
So, in order to write this review I decided to listen a bit to refresh my memory, but once I started, I couldn't stop! So now you how I spent my 3 day weekend. This is one of my favorites from this prolific writer.
I don't believe in spoilers but I can tell you that this book has some different elements that make it a cut above your regular military spacer book. Let's see, AIs, human minds in an alternate digital universe, a little mystic magic, fantastic creatures and some RPG mixed in for good measure.
It sounds like a hodgepodge but it flows nicely and does not interrupt the story at all. Actually, its part of the story. I like that it has a family in it (oooops a spoiler) and reflects believable family issues Each book is great on it's own but together it's almost a saga, I did say I couldn't stop listening right?
Mark Boyett as the narrator moves the story along at a good pace and you always know which characters is which.

Worth Reading
It took a little time for me to get into the story. I persevered and as I continued to listen I began to enjoy the books. The characters, especially Pikeman the main character, become more developed as the story grows. Pikeman develops not as the perfect hero but as a man who makes mistakes along the way but tries his very best which is more than good enough. He cares about the victims of his actions but they don’t deter him from what he has to do.
The books are full of action as you would expect. The concept of people living in the subverse is interesting and it isn’t taken for granted that everything in the subverse is hunk dory. I recommend that if like me you find it a bit pedestrian at the beginning, keep going on as it is worth it. It’s just like life, quiet moments followed by excitement.

A perfect Sci Fi story from a great author!
A great listen! I was looking forward to driving to and from work just to listen to this book. Scott Bartlett books are always great, and awesome narration from Mark Boyett.
A great story line, which concentrates of the story without getting jammed up with technical explanation of how the galaxy works.
A gripping plot with a main character that is well developed. Looking forward to more in this series

It's Fine with a capital F
I didn't hate this, the story was coherent however the writing had a lot of holes. Not plot holes, but holes in what people do and say to each other.
It get very grating that there are many many scenes where people tell the protagonist what he is but these contradict the actions he takes. It's like being shown one thing but told another. It's jarring and is indicative of sub par story telling.
The main characters spends so much time being told variations of him being useless and a terrible person despite every encounter we see having him doing things that are brilliant and trying to help everyone. If the writer wanted to write the checkered past hero they needed to spend some chapters actually showing him being terrible, to actually set up a redemption.
All that said its a fun concept but not worth anything more than your free credit if you have one spare and time to kill.

I liked the synopsis and the fact that you get 27 hours listening for one credit was very attractive; plus I have enjoyed other Scott Bartlett books. This one failed, however. I had to stop listening repeatedly and ended up not finishing because it just seemed to get sillier and sillier, which made me lose interest!
Mark Boyett's excellent narration held it together for a long time, but then I think I just got tired with the story!

Science fiction or fantasy?
Went from good science fiction to end up as a fantasy story with spells and rubbish. Couldn’t finish the audio book. Very disappointed.

C grade star wars rip off
Avoid c grade star wars rip off. Boring. Shallow. Custom words for plot devices. Urgh.

entertaining story.
the story is brilliant but this particular audiobook is absolutely amazing due to the performance by Mark Boyett. Marks ability to jump from character to character is the best I've experienced so far you had no doubt what character he was reading for making it effortless to follow along with the story.

Shocking Irish Accent
It took a long time to get into the story.Improved in the end. Mark needs to stop attempting Celtic accents.

Interesting idea
Interesting plot but full of convenience for the MC and story jolting descriptions/explanations.
Also there is the over use of the unique expletive.
Liked it but wished it was better.

had me engrossed to the very end.
what a fabulous cautionary tale for the future of existence for humanity!
narrator was so perfect for the main role of Joe Pikeman. and his Bot voice was perfect too.
