Publisher's Summary

An elite forces officer with a dreadful reputation. A bookish paleontologist with a love for mysteries. An ancient stronghold full of secrets that will take both of them to unearth.

Professor Lilah Zirkander (yes, she's related to the famous pilot, and no, she can't get him to autograph your undergarments) is looking forward to a summer in the paleontology lab, researching and cataloging new fossils. But that summer takes an unexpected turn when the king sends her into the Ice Blades to a secret mine where ancient dragon bones have been discovered. Rumor has it that they're cursed and dangerous, but Lilah is more concerned about dealing with the outpost commander, a fierce officer with the temperament of a crabby badger.

As punishment for irking the king, Colonel Vann Therrik is overseeing the hardened criminals working in the remote Magroth Crystal Mines. He would like a chance to redeem himself - and escape the loathsome duty station - but nothing is going his way. Cursed fossils have delayed production, miners are trying to escape, and now a scientist has shown up, making demands on his time. Worse, she's the cousin of his nemesis General Zirkander. As if one Zirkander in his world wasn't bad enough.

Investigating the fossils leads Lilah and Vann into the depths of Magroth Mountain where centuries-old secrets lurk, and a long-forgotten threat stalks the passages. To have any chance at survival, they'll have to work together and perhaps learn that neither is what the other expected.

Shattered Past is a stand-alone novel set in the author's Dragon Blood world.

l want to read more about these characters!

I love what these two characters have in common and what their differences invoke in their thoughts! Great offshoot of the main dragon blood series! If you write more I'll read more!

Finally on audio!

I'm so excited that that this title finally made it to audio! Buroker's Dragon Blood series just isn't complete without the story of Colonel Therrick's redemption. I loved the entire series in print, and I think Caitlin Davies does a terrific job of the narration.

Narrator is unpleasant to listen to.

I need to remember to avoid any audible book narrated by Caitlin Davies! I had heard her previously, but had forgotten! She has a nasal snide-sounding voice that rises up and down in a regular rhythm, with no detectable relationship to the character speaking, or the situation in the scene. There is no change in her voice, nor pause, to indicate when the book changes from character 1 to character 5 speaking. Her narrating style makes me seriously dislike even the extremely likable characters in a book,… Which I double checked by going to the Kindle version of this book, and reading it myself.
I enjoy Lindsay Burokers books, and I’m glad to have a return visit to this ancient lost civilization in the Ice Blade mountains.

Narrator, ugh!

I love Lindsay Buroker's books, and although this shorter story clarified some background, I struggled through it. Too much romance and feelings and not enough plot.
The main problem, however, is the terrible narrator. I felt physically seasick from listening to her rising and falling tones. Up and down, up and down with little regard to the actual text. Nauseating!

A romance novel, and not much more

I've loved the series so far, but I definitely could've skipped this one. It was a romance novel with very little action or storyline. I'm hoping the last book in the series is better...

This one can be skipped.

As much fun as the others in this series are, this one is not. Unless you’re into dimestore romance stories about difficult to like characters and and their nauseating conversations.

Unnecessary addition to the series

I am not generally a fan of XX.5 books. I get an author wanting to write a side story about a non-main character, but in my opinion it's better done as either part of a larger book focused on the main characters or as a book that is not numbered as part of the series at all. In an 8, not terribly long, book series, two "half" books seems excessive, plus there have been problems with both of them. I won't go into book 5.5 here other than to say that despite the problems, I still enjoyed that book and felt it fit into the series. This one misses the mark. It's about Zirkander's cousin, who we've never met before and didn't need to meet, and Therrik, a character from previous books who I really didn't care to learn more about. Not everyone needs a backstory/redemption story/romance. It's okay to have support characters. On top of feeling somewhat unnecessary, this book is much more of a "romance" book than an adventure story. The plot seems contrived and there are large numbers of bad double-entendres (archeologist joking about boners, Therrik asking if anything else is sticking up after someone removes something stuck in his hair). For the first time in the series I was just hoping to get through the book and on to the next one.

unexpected story

This was an interesting twist to the story. I dont want to give anything away. I am glad to see the story develop with more character depth and interactions. I am looking forward to reading how the next book uses these new developments.

Brilliant series!

I have read the entire series and am now on my second listen on audible. Rich character development, strong storylines and some intriguing ideas make for a compelling listening experience. The narrator has, in my opinion, done a great job of bringing the authors work to life.

Captivating

I really love these books so much I don’t think I have done reviews on them all due to my eagerness to continue the journeys of all the characters. If you like action, fun and romance then these are the books for you. I have read all the dragon blood books and I think I have just found a spin off series? It has the same people in but with different stories. I can’t wait! I love all the characters, even the surly ones. The stories are captivating and I get lost in the plots. I want to be friends with them and be invited to the castle parties.

Hard to get through without throwing up…

From an exciting story it became a steamy Sunday magazine like love story - that is just boring and shallow. Like all characters MUST have a relationship. There’s only one book left but can I get through with it without throwing up? This 7.5 is so bad that I’m thinking about changing previous reviews… I was already getting annoyed with all the Sardel / Ridge steam, (and all the other “couplings”) but the story was OK. This one is just bad…

A Good Addition to the Series

Another excellent though shorter story to the Dragon Blood series. Enjoyed getting to know Van a little better and thought the new characters fit in well with the continuing plot. Catlin Davies does an excellent narration job as with all the previous books.

Lindsey buroker can give you the feels for anyone!

I never thought I could catch feels for Van - previously known as the unlikeable and thoroughly prickly colonel Theric- but Lindsey buroker is clearly a sorceress with powers rivalling Sardells specialising in making you fall in love with even the most (seemingly) unlikeable characters!!!
