The day before Halloween 2004 was the last day on Earth for respected, well-liked college professor Fred Jablin. That morning, a neighbor discovered his body lying in a pool of blood in the driveway of Jablin's Virginia home. Police immediately turned their attentions to the victim's ex-wife, Piper, a petite, pretty Texas lawyer who had lost a bitter custody battle and would do anything to get her kids back. But Piper was in Houston, 1,000 miles away, at the time of the slaying and couldn't possibly have been the killer...could she?

On a cold January morning, the killer executed Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse in broad daylight. Eight shots fired a block from the Kaufman County Courthouse. Two months later, a massacre. The day before Easter, the couple slept. Bunnies, eggs, a flower centerpiece gracing the table. Death rang their doorbell and filled the air with the rat-a-tat-tat of an assault weapon discharging round after round into their bodies. Eric Williams and his wife, Kim, celebrated the murders with grilled steaks. Williams planned to exact revenge on all those who had wronged him.

Inside a beautiful house in Philadelphia's ritzy Main Line section lay the body of a young mother - dead of an apparent drowning in her bathtub. With no sign of a break-in, no history of marital problems, and the naïve belief that these things sometimes just happen, Stefanie Rabinowitz's family prepared to bury the 29-year-old wife and mother. But at the 11th hour, because Stefanie was so young, and because there were no witnesses to her death, an autopsy was ordered. And what it revealed was unthinkable: Stefanie had been murdered.

The most horrible narration I have encountered yet
Would you try another book from Kathryn Casey and/or Moe Rock?
Kathryn Casey is one of my fave true crime authors, up there with Olsen and Rule. But the narration was just sickening.
If you’ve listened to books by Kathryn Casey before, how does this one compare?
It was so absolutely maddening to listen to this book (or a little more than half of it, so far) that I can't really give a totally separate opinion of just the book as written. I actually had to turn it off and give up several times, just to get this far, because of the despicable narration. But it is hard for me to imagine Kathryn Casey writing a book that I would consider bad. So I kept going back to it to try to disregard the narration and finish the book. Like I say, halfway there so far.
How could the performance have been better?
Different narrator.Maybe this is just a pet peeve of mine and no one else's. But when, oh when, will the narrators figure out that they should just READ THE BOOK to me. This is not a movie or a play. There is no stage for the narrator to get up there and focus all attention on his/herself, and away from the story! There is no way on earth a narrator can do any justice to acting out each character, trying to use a different voice, different accents and inflections, etc., and have it come out like anything decent for the listener. I do not believe 99% of the audiobooks for sale here were ever written with the idea of being read aloud, as opposed to read off the page. So this kind of narration, of so feebly attempting to act out the entire book, is never going to work.In this case, I am so sick of the female narrator trying to imitate the whiney voice of this character or another, be it the hairdresser or various friends, the cold, murderous tone of the gold digger wife, the innocent, young sound of her relatively sweet, victimized twin daughters, not to mention the male characters with deep voices - the rich husband, the ex husbands, etc. I mean I can just barely focus on the action going on, so glaringly does that ridiculous and fakey, unrealistic and totally poorly done, "acting" assault my train of thought. It is a real wonder to me how this kind of reader stays employed for these audiobooks, while the likes of Kevin Pierce, and others, are available.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment, big time. I cannot enjoy this work by Kathryn Casey as I have most all her other offerings. I was all set for a really engrossing listen, to lighten the load of my daily chores; instead this is a struggle all the way through. If I just had the time, I would opt for the hardcopy book instead, or the ebook, but who has the leisure these days to sit and read?
Any additional comments?
I would be curious if I am totally warped on this topic, (I have been accused of eccentricity at times...) or if others get this upset at the narration as I do. I think I am relatively accepting - slight mispronunciations do not bother me too much, or genuine accents from different parts of the country. In lots of cases, these things can subtly add to the authenticity aspect of the reading of some of these nonfiction, true crime books. Nonfiction is the only kind of reading I do. Perhaps that is part of my irritation with this narration issue - maybe I am not sufficiently tuned in to the flavor of novels and other kinds of fiction.
But this misguided attempt to act out the entire book really just has to go.

Ruined by melodramatic reading
This is an extremely well-written and well researched book, with a fascinating topic – but it is ruined by the narrator's decision to perform the victim's wife using a screeching, high-pitched baby voice that drips with judgment, eliminates any surprise as to how her character turns out, and is both annoying and distracting.

Horrible Narrator
Story was good, although quite repetitive. Narrator was so bad I almost quit. She was like a really bad William Shatner impersonator, but minus any charm. Bizarre intonation / choppy. Every (I mean EVERY) female voice was a sort of gruff, slightly slurred, twangy sameness. A few words were mispronounced. Distracting to an extreme.
Writing was fine. Nothing left out. Satisfying true crime.

Great Story
If you could sum up She Wanted It All: A True Story of Sex, Murder, and a Texas Millionaire in three words, what would they be?
This was a really great book! It makes you feel happy, sad, and angry at different times throughout it.
What other book might you compare She Wanted It All: A True Story of Sex, Murder, and a Texas Millionaire to and why?
Kathryn Casey's other true crime books are quite similar to this one.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The author's accents that she used for the different characters was a bit weird at times.

far better than most true crime
I have read a lot of true crime, and this is one of the very best. An absorbing story about a larger-than-life villian with a wispy 'little girl' voice and a streak of pure narcissistic sociopathy, it is both well-written and riveting. The story is well narrated with entertaining characterizations, and the psychology of the main characters is complex and fascinating.

This narrator needs a new career!!
Decent story, with lots of details (although it dragged at times) but Ms. Rock's narration is the biggest crime in this story! Not only are her voice inflections ridiculously overdone (I had to increase the speed just to even listen without becoming totally distracted,) but the voices she invokes for the main characters - worse than nails on a chalkboard!! This one is definitely better in print.

Christ on a stick!
This was a comedy, right down to the narrator taking on all of the characters , the funniest was the Butch Lesbian lover who sounded like Humphrey Bogarde on Meth, the Wife sounded like she had devoured a litre of helium and only had two words in her vocabulary which was F at . F uck( i kid you not!
A sad cliche of a pathetic rich old man and a greedy mal educated tramp using each other for the most blatant pleasures.

Loved the book...
This is the first book I have read by Kathryn Casey. I really enjoyed the book- it was extremely well written and very in depth.
My only criticism is of the narrator. Moe Rock has a lovely voice, and is a great story teller. However, I felt that the dramatic voices for each of the characters were quite irritating. I fast forwarded through some parts because I couldn’t stand Celeste’s voice. I think the narrator should just stick with her own voice and not worry about dramatisations.
In saying that, I would still recommend this great audiobook to anyone who (like me) is a fan of authors like Jack Olsen, Ann Rule or Gregg Olsen.
