Story
Life played its horrible games with the girl. As she grew up she devised clever places to hide - inside and outside of her mind. She was tricked by her own illusions; she was caught in traps of her own creation. It began with a kidnapping, a locked room, and the broken doll that was more than a plaything…and always, in the shadows, the dangerous painting from her past waited, threatening to expose her.

Story
Evil rules the mean streets in many guises, waiting in the shadows along the crumbled edges of the mega-cities, where murder is the only crime that leaves a trace for lesser violent acts are simply not reported. Children, the elderly, the slightly and severely damaged make up the homeless. The weak and the helpless are deemed beyond salvation and beneath contempt by all but the strongest and the cruelest who see them as a source of sustenance.

Millions of threads so thin as to be invisible, so vaporous as to be ductile, drift through the classroom, emitting a chill and leaving a sense of unease. Hidden deep in their cloaks, the Blue Lights analyze the odors that cling to the individual cells of every child, from the top of each little head to the bottom of their ticklish feet and every dark secret place in between, from their gathering brains to their blood-soaked spleens. One girl feels dizzy; one boy throws up.

I am going to die here. My name is Mindy Mason; I’m a student from the University. I volunteered for one experiment; it was to be for one day only. I want to go home now. I hear cries, screams, and shrieks in the night. Some of the voices sound as if they are coming from the pillow under my head, others as if from a radio behind a door in a far room, and yet others come from my dreams, thus layering my terror. I know Wendy has a knife; perhaps she has killed again. How can I stop her?

One by one, cities have been falling to a terrorist attack. No one can stop the terrorists or figure out where the next attack will take place. All that is known is when the attacks start, the strange gas the terrorists use turns the moon a blood red, and black shadows of men and women are seen, slinking among the buildings. Yet, somehow, not a single survivor has managed to provide a solid description of the people attacking their towns. Most contribute this to the mysterious gas that seems to put the residence into a temporary psychotic state, but what if it’s something more than that?

Slowpoke styled Groundhog's Day revenge
I am usually super gung ho to write about a horror story I just sank my fangs into. I listened to this several days ago, but am just getting around to writing a review. That means I've had some time to chew on this a while, and I am glad that I did, because I would have been a little harsher right out of the gate.
First, I love Jack de Golia, he is in my favored narrators list, but his voice for Shypoke just did not work for me. Everything else was fine, but Shy just got stuck in my ears and refused to go down easy. Sorry, Jack. The voice you used would have worked for another character, I think, but this one was a swing and a miss for me. I really hate to say that, too.
Second, this story came as a suggestion by one of my favorite authors, the ever twisty Roma Gray. She always hits you with a spin that doesn't just come out of left field, it comes from left field from a stadium four cities away. She knows her horror. Naturally, I got this just cause she told me too. I found the piece well written, thoughtful, and on par with Twilight Zone styled stories. I just didn't fnd it overly scary, which is fine, I can handle a thoughtful piece every now and again. my disappointment, if I had any came when I heard this was a Ground Hog Day styled piece of horror, but only got one iteration with the realization of some deeper underlying horrors. Just not what I was expecting, and that is my fault, I usually go into a story blindly. No idea of what is going to happen, but here I let my expectations lead me.
The story is worthwhile, and worth your time and dime. This looks to be a promising author, although I haven't seen anything else by her I will keep an audible ear open for her next release. I did enjoy the story, and felt it had depth and some real power behind it. You don't see that very often. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.
If this review helped, please press the YES below. Thank you immensely!!!

This tale deals a large dose of horror
Like a macabre Groundhog Day" this tale from Dona Fox starts out, as do most of her stories, in a relatively normal setting.. In fact, you forget that this is a horror story. But at a certain point, each sentence starts to pull you further into the tale,, word by word, until you realize that there is something really wrong but you can't quite put your finger on it. And then, there you are. You never saw it coming. From the normal to the supernatural, Dona Fox always delivers. This Audible version featuring the eerie voice of Jack de Golia only enhances the experience.

Short and satisfying!
This story was so worth the few minutes it took to listen. most of the time a short story leaves me wanting, while this one did not. The uncle got everything he deserved.
This was a scary little story that makes the guilty want to look under their bed. Reminds me a lot of Edgar Allen Poe.

Excellent, Creepy
Excellent, vivid ,creepy, surprising. This story seems much longer than 18 minutes because the principal characters describe so much that has happened before the uncle starts telling the story. The narrator s voice was a perfect fit for the uncle. Excellent writing, excellent narration.

A Hauntingly Creepy Story
Right from the first few minutes, there is something very creepy and haunting about this story. And the writing was beautiful in a sometimes ghastly way. The characters were also fully developed, rare in a short story.
I think one of the things I especially loved about it is I didn't see where it was going until the story was right on top of me. I was wondering where it was going, but never would have guessed this ending, which was pretty disturbing. It's one of those stories that really sticks with you.
The narrator was also great. He helped add to an already disturbing story. Nice voice range, dripping in character.
Very unique, very creepy. Loved it!

Deliciously Dark
Dona Fox has written a conversation between a young girl, Shypoke, and her mothers lover, Frank, takes place on a wooden bridge. Slowly the horror of recent events unfolds tingling the listeners nerves. Beautifully narrated by Jack de Golia.
