Publisher's Summary

The inside story of how Big Pharma’s relentless pursuit of ever-higher profits corrupts medical knowledge - misleading doctors, misdirecting American health care, and harming our health.

The United States spends an excess $1.5 trillion annually on health care compared to other wealthy countries - yet the amount of time that Americans live in good health ranks a lowly 68th in the world. At the heart of the problem is Big Pharma, which funds most clinical trials and therefore controls the research agenda, withholds the real data from those trials as corporate secrets, and shapes most of the information relied upon by health-care professionals.

In this no-holds-barred exposé, Dr. John Abramson - one of the foremost experts on the drug industry’s deceptive tactics - combines patient stories with what he learned during many years of serving as an expert in national drug litigation to reveal the tangled web of financial interests at the heart of the dysfunction in our health-care system. For example, one of pharma’s best-kept secrets is that the peer reviewers charged with ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the clinical trial reports published in medical journals do not even have access to complete data and must rely on manufacturer-influenced summaries. Likewise for the experts who write the clinical practice guidelines that define our standards of care.

The result of years of research and privileged access to the inner workings of the US medical-industrial complex, Sickening shines a light on the dark underbelly of American health care - and presents a path toward genuine reform.

No PDF

The narrator keeps referring to contents of an "accompanying PDF" that does not exist. Detracts from an otherwise compelling book. Kevin Stillwell narration excellent as usual.

Sickening

Every adult in the United States should read/listen to this book. The title is right. it's sickening how this is allowed. Thanks for methodically laying out the facts, sharing your expertise and educating all who will listen.

Finally some real insight

It is disheartening to get the evidence of what our guidelines and practice insights are based on. As physicians we try to do the best for our patients, obviously big pharma has another idea. Over the years I have taken many women off of statins for lack of evidence of benefit in primary prevention at the risk of upsetting my referral source, but right is right.
Glad this book agrees, hopefully someone has the guts and political will power to stop having big pharma make us sick. Great book, excellent read for all physicians and patients.

If you work in healthcare…

If you work in healthcare then this book will give you the data to confirm your suspicions. This book made me realize I have never seen a Neurontin Rx for its FDA approved purpose, This book is sobering, maddening, and deeply important. As a specialist in mental health it answers so many of my questions about why my patients often don’t improve with ongoing med management. I highly recommend it.

Informative But a Little Inconsistent

Some revealing information in this book on how the pharmaceutical companies control and manipulate our entire medical system and government. The author presents a pretty good case and provides a number of good examples. However, the author seems to blindly trust pharmaceutical companies and the current system he maligns in the book when it comes to these “vaccines” for COVID. So his inconsistent and contrary viewpoints make it difficult to trust everything he presents in this book.

Must Read or Listen!

This is an eye-opening and shocking read! I have been working as an RN for years sacrificing for others, but also have a family with medical needs, and this just blows my mind. That the sources I have come to rely on for information are commercially compromised makes sense when always stuck at the endpoint of “how is this patient going to ever be able to afford this?”. And when you look at the rationale for cost, is it in short supply? No. Is it hard to manufacture and transport? Does not seem to be as it is on your television screen every other hour which is something you don’t do if you have core issues. It’s just a blatant bullying of people who need truth not robbery. Wow. Spelled out very clearly and the book takes you through a systemic injustice step by step that leaves you wondering how many other things might be misled in this current capitalist state. Scary.

Eye opening.

A very eye opening look into how big pharma is single handedly driving the American healthcare system into the ground. Every American should read this to truly understand why our highest cost in the world healthcare system is purely profit driven and leaves America dead last in overall health among other wealthy nations and Americans literally dead.

Blew this pharmacy technician's mind.

Dr. John Abramson does a wonderful job detailing how Pharma has managed to not only push tons of drugs onto Americans, but how they also control the scientific findings that keep doctors from knowing the truth about their products. As a former CPhT, I thought I knew something about how drug manufacturers push their products, but this is beyond what I expected. Hyping up drugs on TV and giving out samples to doctors is bad enough, but their capture of the scientific medical journals that doctors rely on is far worse. They've managed to convince us that taking medicine (for life) is how we stay healthy, not lifestyle, and millions of us have died as a result. Big Pharma has big blood money on their hands.

It's a wake-up call. Don't let your fellow Americans remain ignorant of Pharma's despicable behavior. And don't support doctors or pharmacists who care more about pushing drugs than healing patients. Put the screws to these highly paid and well regarded medical professionals. Ask them what they are doing to alleviate this. Don't support the ones that don't care. And vote for representatives that will prioritize reining in this out of control industry.

American healthcare is a scandal. We owe ourselves and our families better. Thank you, Dr. Abramson.
