Publisher's Summary

This compelling spiritual quest by Hermann Hesse, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946, is considered one of the most important works of 20th century fiction. Siddhartha's search for enlightenment leads him to the river of life itself. On his journey he learns from many teachers: the ascetic Samanas, the all-knowing Gotama the Buddha, Kamala the lovely courtesan, and Vasudeva the simple ferryman. Unwilling to accept the wisdom of others, Siddhartha comes to an understanding of himself and his place in the universe, finally achieving the enlightened state of mind in which he can say to his lifelong friend: "The world, Govinda, is perfect at every moment."

Critic Reviews

"No living English-speaking actor outshines Derek Jacobi, nor any audiobook reader for that matter. He sings, rather than speaks, with extraordinary lyricism, expressiveness, and depth." (AudioFile)

Choosing an audio version of Siddhartha

Audible currently offers 4 versions of Hermann Hesse's, "Siddhartha". I'd like to help you with your selection.

Derek Jacobi brilliantly breathes life into the current edition. The reading is stellar, making this by far the recommended choice. Caveat: this version is abridged.

As for the unabridged versions:

Fidrous Bamji: If you must choose an unabridged version, this is the best of the lot. The narration is pleasing to the ear, but simply lacks the magic of Jacobi's rendition.

James Langton: TOO FAST. Langton literally speed narrates the story, leaving you with a throbbing headache by the time he's done.

Harish Bhimani: Bhimani sounds too self-indulgent, seems to be in love with his own voice. Pronunciation and inflection are questionable. The translation sounds flat, dead, worn.

Great Narrator, Not the full story

This book is my favorite book of all time and I really like this narrator. He is very sincere in what he is reading and adds much to the story. I knew this was abridged, but it is only 4 chapters. This would be my favorite audible title if it was just complete.

Disappointed in Paraphrase & Over Editing

While reading a copy of Hesse’ Siddhartha I then chose to finish the story using my Audible account. Immediately I realized the two were not the same… many words were completely left out in the Audible version while others were paraphrased.
The written version has such a wonderful command of language; unlike anything we are used to in the 21st century. It’s a shame that was lost in Audible’s version. One wonders why? Surely it cannot be merely for the sake of brevity. Other books I’ve enjoyed with Audible were very lengthy and had several volumes & they weren’t chopped like Siddhartha.
There were several versions of Siddhartha offered by Audible and I chose the one narrated by Sir Derek Jacobi. I’m very glad I did as his enunciation is impeccable.

So many skipped paragraphs!

Loved listening to the sound of the narrator’s voice but too many sentences and paragraphs were skipped but still in the written page.
Very frustrating!

This is one of my favorite books.

Struggling on my own speritual path, I come back to this story and it brings me peace. It was one of the books years ago that got me thinking, thinking about everything. A book that I suggest everyone reads or listens to, regardless of where they are in life, or what religion they claim.

A fantastic book

A book that I found to be developmental and maturative for a young man coming of age such as myself. I found that this author is incredible and highly unnoticed. I found further that the author has read with exactness and precision and the intonations and inflections were perfect. I highly recommend this book.
