Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye comes a riveting short story about an impossible connection across two centuries that could make the difference between peace or war.

Yorkshire, 1943. Lily Baines, a bright young debutante increasingly ground down by an endless war, has traded in her white gloves for a set of headphones. It’s her job to intercept enemy naval communications and send them to Bletchley Park for decryption.

One night, she picks up a transmission that isn’t code at all—it’s a cry for help.

An American ship is taking heavy fire in the North Atlantic—but no one else has reported an attack, and the information relayed by the young US officer, Matt Jackson, seems all wrong. The contact that Lily has made on the other end of the radio channel says it’s…2023.

Across an eighty-year gap, Lily and Matt must find a way to help each other: Matt to convince her that the war she’s fighting can still be won, and Lily to help him stave off the war to come. As their connection grows stronger, they both know there’s no telling when time will run out on their inexplicable link.

Critic Reviews

“The touch of fantasy interjected into this compelling audiobook is a unique departure from author Kate Quinn's usual historical fiction.… The narrators make the characters so real that listeners can suspend disbelief and feel their tension, grit, and cleverness. Both narrators display considerable linguistic talent as they portray these heroes with warmth and bravado.”AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

time warp

I enjoyed this audio but wish it had been longer. The time warp idea was good and the relationship between Lilly and Matt was compelling. It was too bad they never got to meet again. I would recommend this novel.

Too short

Story was great. Performance excellent. But, feel I wasted an Audible credit. I should’ve obviously checked closer to see that it was a very very short story. Didn’t realize that Quinn did anything but full novels. Bummed.

Listen with bleach

Great story tarnished by profanity. It would be so much better without the extra obscenities.

Another hit for Kate Quinn!

Have highly enjoyed all of Kate Quinn’s books and this short story was no exception.
Though the time travel was a bit of a stretch of the imagination, it was interesting to learn of women who enlisted in the Women's Royal Naval Service known as “Wrens”, who worked in communications on decryption.
Would like to see Quinn write another full story involving these women and the contributions they made to the war effort.

Short, perfect, and still want more

The problem with a good short story is that it’s over too quick, and this was a superb short story.

I’ve loved all of Quinn’s WWII historical fictions and Saskia never disappoints either. Gibson was new to me but he nailed his character, matching delivery and tone to the quick witted character that Quinn gave him on a silver platter.

My one grip is that I had been mislead that novel length authors struggled with short stories. Well, Quinn clearly does not suffer from that affliction and I’m slightly irritated by her perfection (just teasing)

It could be possible

As a child of 2nd world war Veterans, things are never discussed for very good reason. it came as no surprise to hear what Lady Rose went through in her job, like countless other brave souls!

Cheesy, cliched but still a weepy

Magical realism but ultimately pretty cheesy take on posh plucky Brit and tough American ‘romance that can never be’ saving the world through time. If you want something easy and relatively gripping (although it’s clear it’s gonna end fine) then all good, but otherwise try something **slightly** more challenging…!

Simply Brilliant

Absolutely loved this, both narrators brought WW2 and the 21st century blend to life. The story is captivating and I listened to the last chapter close before realising I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. Almost a modern day take with a twist on the David Niven film A Matter of Life and Death, I think it’d make a perfect film
