Stunning! What a unique find!
This was a shockingly great find. I have read many fantasy books and often find the same story retold. This is not the case. I enjoyed every part of it. very unique characters and storyline. Hints of magic and love with well developed characters. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. A must read!

Fantastic book!!
I loved this book! The characters were so well drawn and the story very compelling. The universe W.K. I found myself both wanting to keep listening to the story and yet not wanting it to end… I highly recommend this very entertaining book.

Excellent audiobook experience
Slightly reminiscent of the witch trials this story is a wonderful tale of a son’s love loyalty for his father, and his growing realization that the way things are, must change. Walde’s journey to find his father, while discovering the depth of his gifts, runs the reader through the gamut of their own emotions.
One of the best parts of this experience is the narrator. Mr. Morey pulls the reader in so quickly that one forgets the task set out to do while listening.

Couldn't predict where this story was going!
I'm a sucker for father/son loyalty themes. I know the main story is more about a people group with forbidden powers and their grave perils and the possible demise of the mother-tree and all that that entails, but it was the length that the son went through to save his father that was the most riveting aspect for me. I loved the relationships that were forged during the son's travels, as he sought to find and save his father. W.K. Greyling has always done well with character development when writing, in this one she did not disappoint. I really couldn't predict where the story was going and I love when that happens. There were some unbelievable surprises and twists that were laugh-out-loud thrilling. I did read the second book in this series and I can report that it even gets better!

A great read
This was my first book by this author. It was unique because Wales has a power to communicate with an earth god. He needed to keep his abilities a secret but he slipped. The events after that created a dangerous journey for Wales and his companion. Once the 2 set off they won't stop. A great read.

Good fantasy story
The book is rather slow to begin with, but when you persist it develops into a very well written and enjoyable fantasy story. The main story begins with Walde accidentally discovering he is a Reacher, a tree dweller with great power. There is great fear for his life as Reacher's are discriminated against and killed once discovered. Waldes father is taken which sets him on a journey to rescue him. This takes him on an adventure where he discovers the truth about his people, dissolving the mystery and conspiracy depicted by those who fear and wish to harm the Reacher's.
I didn't get on well with the narrator, but looking forward to book 2.

Refreshing
This book is interesting and follows the development of Walde and Bright as they travel to try and save Walde's father.
The book develops the world and the characters and it covers the many trials they face as they travel from Walde's home to the port city where his father has been sent.
Not only must he learn to deal with his emotions he must also learn to recognize the feelings he develops along the way and to recognize that not everyone thinks as he has been brought up to think.
The narration is good with the many voices for the many characters.
This book was provided free of charge with the hope for an honest review.

Fantasy at it's Best
A good listen this has been well crafted a more of a fantasy rather than supernatural, mother trees children that don't age Walde has inherited a forbidden power, his father according to the elders has been executed, by placing on a raft and sent down the raging river. Walde sets out on a journey to the harbour hoping to find his father or indeed his body, and his trials and tribulations along the way. This is the 1st audiobook in the series and I have already the 2nd so I can finish Walde's journey. The narration by Arthur Morey is very calm and soothing.

Interesting idea
This book is an interesting fantasy tale, based in the world of 'Reachers' who can commune with a spiritual being found in 'mother trees'. The few reachers that still exist are persecuted and either imprisoned or killed - reminds me of heretics in medieval times (only in reverse). The story is interesting but a little slow to get established, and comes into its own about halfway through the book. My main gripe is unfortunately the narrator. His delivery is fine (with occasion 'page turning' gaps which should have been edited out), but I'm afraid the heroine Bright's voice sounds like a little wizened Irish man, which is a bit disconcerting when she's supposed to be an auburn haired beauty. I think Mr Morey's voice is just too old for a book like this, although the accents seemed to improve towards the end. A pleasant enough listen, given the caveats.

I have stopped but briefly just to leave a review of this brilliantly written story, before moving on to book 2. The author captured me from very early in and held me tight right to the close of the book. Enchanting! Exciting! Tense.
I listened to the audio version And was very impressed with the narration.
