Story
I knew hot flashes were supposed to be hot, but I didn't expect flames. One day I'm in anger management, normalizing the cordial hate between me and my husband. The next, we're divorced, and he has taken both our house and the business we built together. I'm 40 years old and living above our empty restaurant, plotting my next move. And then the world around starts lighting up - literally catching on fire. I'm starting to think my defining characteristic may not be my snark or my cupcake-baking prowess, but spontaneous combustion.

After finding my soon-to-be ex-husband together with my soon-to-be ex-assistant, I realize his "for better or for worse" didn't include my 40s. An extended vacation on a remote Italian island sounds like the perfect antidote to a midlife crisis - until I arrive. I'm expecting Chianti and pasta. What I get is a run-down bed-and-breakfast with the oldest Nonna in existence. There's something about this island. Something odd. Like how everyone keeps calling me Mamma or how I'm the first tourist in decades.

After dating a string of losers and banishing a poltergeist, I packed up my Los Angeles life and my 11-year-old son, and moved...to a town in Oregon with a population of 680. Well, 682 now. Culture shock anyone? Ahem, never mind that.... New starts can happen anywhere, right? I hope so, because I need to start the next chapter of my 43-year life pronto. So, why Haven Hollow? Story
The day after my 43rd birthday, my husband announced he was trading me in - his words, not mine. The news was unwelcome at the time, but honestly? I needed a good goosing to get up and find my way to the door. So I was freed from the giant manual of expectations authored by my ex. That was the good news. The flip side was less happy. Due to living in a state not friendly to discarded wives, I was also relieved of the financial "security" I'd spent a lifetime accruing.

Uplifting midlife magic
Overall: Narration by Xe Sands takes this charming story of midlife magic to the next level. A light and lovely audiobook perfect for fans of paranormal women’s fiction.
Performance: Xe Sands brings this story to life with narration filled with nuance, verve, and charm. I’m a fan of her work, and she’s always excellent, but what she brings to Silver Spells is an intimacy of storytelling that really draws you in. It’s like having your best friend tell you the story over a glass of wine. Xe knows how to deliver a gripping scene just as well as a humorous or romantic one.
Story: The story itself is an uplifting tale of the power of friendship, love, and believing in yourself. Luella, the empty-nester protagonist, discovers that she has not only magical powers but an adorable magic dog to go with them. The mystery of the origin of those powers unfolds over the course of the book along with a sweetly romantic subplot with a man from her past. Subsequent books will follow the adventures of Luella’s two closest friends, Rose and Pepper. I’ve read quite a few of the new paranormal women’s fiction books, and although this one is firmly in the genre, it’s definitely a bit of a different take. It’s lighter, brighter, and all in all focused on magic, love, and joy, with its own uplifting, unique spin on magical women’s fiction.

Crisis, Romance, and Magic at Midlife
Midlife just got magical and weird for an empty-nester divorcee who just lost her job and boyfriend, but discovered a new affinity for animals no one else could see. Paranormal women’s fiction is a fairly new to me genre mash up that I am coming to really enjoy so I was tickled to try a new to me author and series narrated by a stellar storyteller.
Luella has been working at the same company since high school and anticipated working there until retirement when she suddenly and inexplicably was let go from the marketing staff. Divorced for many years and with a daughter away at college, Luella has to find a new job and soon. Meanwhile, a bizarre change of circumstances has the rest of her attention. The sight of a silvery ghost-like dog in the office and a rush of wind that only she and her best friends can see is the beginning of a mysterious magic she seems to possess. As other animals appear under odd circumstances and gifts as well, she knows she needs to figure out what is going on quickly. But, where to start? Her quest involves her two besties, an old high school crush and her quirky biker mama.
Silver Spells was an engaging introduction to a new series and I enjoyed meeting Luella and her friends. I found the inclusion of her ex who is not the cliché, a daughter with food health issues, her full figure just being her and nothing to dent her confidence, good times with her gal pals, flirty meet cute with Raphael, and her very mature approach to life a refreshing set of circumstances that added up to a right cozy situation.
Silver Spells is definitely on the easy going side and doesn’t introduce more to the plot than getting to know the setting, characters, and Luella’s new circumstances. Perhaps it gets more intense as the series progresses or maybe it stays gentle like a cozy mystery. Either way, I liked what I got and would definitely keep going with more of the series.
Xe Sands is a narrator that I’m long familiar with and I was able to settle into her narration work with no effort. I thought she matched up with the style of the writing and tone of the book and she had the character voices down pat. I hope she has the narration of the whole series. She made this high quality production even better.
All in all, this first in series is off to a satisfying start and I was well entertained. I can recommend it to those who enjoy stories focused on fun female friendships, a paranormal element, a bit of mystery and pinch of romance sprinkled in for good measure.

different....but needs something more....
After being fired from her job, Luella Campbell starts to have weird and unexplained things happen to her. A mysterious dog (no one else can see) then the sudden gift of wild and windy magical powers occur -
With the help of her ex high school crush, her BFF's and her mother, Luella finds a way to unlock the mysteries of her newfound magic.
While this story IMO was cute, there was very little mystery or plot to the story - for me the storyline didn't "gel." Ironically I don't even know why the book was called Silver Spells?

A wonderful journey into magic
A really heartwarming journey into love and magic. Luella’s life seems to be falling apart, and at the same time, the oddest things are happening around her. Strange, mystical dogs that she and her 2 best friends can only see, as well as other animal encounters. As she tries to figure out what’s happening, she and her friends Rose and Pepper lean on their friendship, while a very sweet, adorable flirtation with a blast from her past, help navigate her to the answers.
This is an interesting story. There isn’t really a “big bad”, it truly is just a story about this woman and finding her magic. Despite any overarching, extreme drama, it is still a compelling and interesting story. The narration is well done, a very well suited voice for Luella, capturing all the emotion she is dealing with. I really enjoyed it, and look forward to more in this series.

No story, bland narration.
This novel spends too much time on building the base for a series(?), and not enough on an actual plot. (What plot?) Although a fan of PWF, I found this book lacked action and the writing and narration too flat to keep the premise interesting. Everything that happens is presented as ordinary, and thus bland. For example, during the first day, several fantastic/paranormal events take place in the heroine’s life and the author doesn’t have the characters express any reactions. This continues throughout most of the book. Little anger/happiness/excitement etc. is expressed. The characters themselves are monotone, and thus the story.
Xe Sands narration does not help to make this story better. Though a pleasant voice, Ms. Sands intonation is too soft and flat for the majority of the fantastical events. Her voice could have made the book a little more lively, but that was a fail, too. Ms. Sands added no additional excitement to her voice even when extremely non-normal things happened: the heroine gets wings (wings!) and neither the writing or narration made it seem like more than getting a new nail color.
I won’t be buying the next book, if there is one.

Cosy and entertaining
I like paranormal woman fiction a lot and was looking forward to this one.
The story hocked me right in the first chapter. Not only a relationship can be an anchor in your life, a job can be one, too. The author Kate Moseman points out the struggle to find a new job and to get along with less money.
When the main character Luella Campbell lost her job she got help from her friends and her mother. I loved the friendship between these women and her mother is a unique character. I liked the relationship with her ex-husband as well. Not every divorce needs to end terrible und it is great to get a positive example.
The magic was fascinating, but there could have been more and different reactions from the characters.
The story got a cute romance - it is not very dominant and made me smile.
I liked the way the story developed and got excited about some plot twist. Unfortunately the problems are solved a bit too fast and smooth, for my personal liking.
The voice of Xe Sands is a perfect cast for this story. She is excellent at portraying the characters.
Over all it was a cosy and entertaining story, with interesting characters.

Author Kate Moseman

I was absolutely delighted to be one of the first people to have the opportunity to listen to and Review this book, as it was only released on Audible on 13.04. 21. Thank you Kate, I feel really privileged to be one of the first and enjoyed your book immensely.
This is the first book in the Midlife Elemental's Series, the narrator XE Sands has a very relaxing voice, which makes the book very easy to listen to as she tells Luella Cambell and her friends story.
This is a really lovely pleasant story of magic love and and friendship. We join Luella her family and friends mortal and magical as Luella and her friends are suddenly get given a gift of magical elemental power's. Their whole world is turned upside down.
A great start to the series and I am looking forward to the rest of it becoming available on Audible so that I can listen to their adventure's, after all they now have magic at their finger tips.

Silver Spells
I enjoyed this book the accents of the narrator kept you listening. My favourite character was Zeffla, would like him by my side. Just like a film you know there’s a sequel and you can’t wait for it to come out.

Wow I’m intrigued
So this book was by a new author for me but I’ve been enjoying this genre lately and the cover drew my attention. I wasn’t real sure what to expect from this book but I can say that I loved it. I loved how the story had a major plot twist. But I really do think there’s more to come yet. I don’t think it’s all over just yet. So I will be keeping my eye open for any more books from this author.
This was also a new narrator for me and well I was certainly pleased with her work.

Intriguing Intro to series
This book took a unique take on the women’s paranormal genre. A lot of paranormal books are geared toward a younger crowd where the characters are teens/mid 20’s, which can be fantastic, but it was cool to see it transpire into a different age group. This is the first book in this series, the story itself, was about a group of three besties discovering who they truly are while navigating regular life with a touch of clean romance. I look forward to hearing more in this world and what could happen. I really enjoyed the narration.

Empowering and liberating story about older women
Luella begins the story unemployed, out of pocket, in a relationship with a man who puts her down, and worried about how she will fund her daughter's education. She ends up having her own magical powers awakened and turning her life around. The descriptions of magic are beautiful and the relationships between the women are warm, supportive and empowering in a magical and everyday way.

Enchanting!
Pleasantly surprised by this book. This was my first time listening to one of Kate Moseman's work, and I was taken aback by how much I liked her style. The storyline is well-composed, well-paced, riveting, enchanting, and quite charming, with excellent character development and world-building. The Xe Sands is one of my favourite narrators, and I thought her performance was absolutely flawless. All in all, Silver Spells was a very enjoyable listen with quality writing, appealing characters, and outstanding narration. I'm definitely recommending this audiobook!

Strange goings on
When Luella gets fired from her job for no reason at all ,then a strange dog only her and her two friends can see creates a whirlwind in her workplace . Things only get weirder after that and when they all realise they have magical powers they have to figure out why and how to use them. Enjoyed listening to this book the characters were good and the narrator did a good job.
