When everything is on the line, how far will you go to protect those you love? What if the cost of saving them is your soul? Would you pay it? I thought I was prepared for what was coming; that if I made sacrifices, I could win this game. I’m no longer afraid of the darkness or the monsters that hide in the shadows. I’ve become what I feared most, allowing it in to protect those I loved. Sometimes it takes a monster to win. Sometimes to fight monsters, you have to become one. My only fear is…can I come back from it?

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Publisher's Summary
Some people are ordained for greatness…
Those people usually have a lot of drama in their life. Drama I happily do without. I live in a forgotten corner of nowhere for a reason: there is safety in anonymity. I have enough problems just trying to get by.
But when Kieran, a sinfully sexy demigod at the pinnacle of power, crashes into my life, suddenly my whole world is turned upside down.
He’s harboring a deadly secret, one that could destroy all he holds dear. He thinks I’m the key to his salvation, and he wants me to help him claim vengeance.
He also wants me with a passion that burns my body from the inside out.
To ignore him is impossible, but to give in to my desires, even for a night, would thrust me into danger I might not survive.
Can I resist the temptation?

No HEA? Seriously?
First off, the narrator is amazing!
However... (SPOILER ALERT)
.
.
.
.
The heroine was snarky and stubborn, which I typically like. But this one just went on too long. Sometimes she was the adult in the relationship with her wards and sometimes not (which was cool at times and amazingly dysfunctional at others).
I could have overlooked the things I didn’t enjoy if there had been an HEA. The hero and heroine DON’T END UP TOGETHER. There’s no sex of any kind, not even ‘closed door’.
In the end, the heroine agrees to work for the hero, and the book is over.

Nice start to a new series
Holy moly, K.F. Breene does it again with the start of this new series! I was hooked from the first chapter and absolutely hated to put the book down! What an amazing story. A female lead with a lot of snark and sass takes on a demigod who reluctantly has the hots for the heroine. I laughed so hard a couple of times I was crying and getting dirty looks from my son. This isn’t an ordinary run of the meal paranormal story. The storyline is well developed, highly entertaining, & combines paranormal romance with mythology. The characters are likable and believable. Besides the main characters, I really, really liked the support characters. They were so much fun! I’m so looking forward to the next book! The narrator did a fantastic job!

Found my answer
I kept wondering through the whole book when we were going to get into the real story. I knew that this was a series, but even in a series you get some kind, or at least a little taste of the players in action. Not so here.
This book is full of character descriptions, both living and dead, and the way their lives are going to be changed in a few days (I guess). The only thing that you can do is guess; for this whole book is spent on describing what the movie and tv industry would call the "set".
There was nothing at all in it to entice me to to buy the next book. Maybe you'll get something different from it, but I'm moving on to the next book on my TBR list.

A new UF with all kinds of supes
For a first book, the author laid an excellent foundation while keeping the pace of the story fast.
Alexis was a great heroine who had a big heart but firm grasp on surviving. Her two wards Daisy and Mordecai were just as entertaining.
I’m still torn about the hero because he has his own agenda and motives but he has shown kindness, so I’m giving him room to win me over.
The narrator was just gold and the plot was really intriguing. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story.

Not really sure...
Not really sure where all of the high ratings came from. The H was a jerk through the entire book all the way up until the last 45 minutes and then he barely redeems himself just a little bit. And the h is constantly just falling for his hotness even though she should be angry. Every time she showed a little backbone I got super happy thinking this would be the turning point...and every time I got more disappointed in her being a doormat.

Great but different
I enjoyed this paranormal take on our society in general. It depicts so many of the stupid behaviors that people exhibit daily. When it comes down to it. All people are the same yet different and unique. We are all born, we all bleed, we all die. yet prejudice is so rampant. This story is fictional yet so close to what the truth in our world is. We all occupy one planet. If we blow up one part it will impact the whole.

I love this story.
Usually the heroine is depicted as a nitwit who stupidly places themselves in danger, with low self esteem. This book did not need to make her small in order to sell the romance. I can't wait for the next one! The narrator did well with switching betweens the voices to bring the story to life. There was one instance where the voice change while the same character was speaking, this threw me off for a beat. but overall great performance.

I really love the story, but the accents...
I have to admit, I have gotten used to terrible Irish accents in popular media, but I can’t believe the narrator didn’t know how to pronounce “Galway”. That hurt.
Also Samwise Gamgee. In fact, more so, as the LotR references are a running joke in the book so this should have been a word the narrator was familiar with.
I just feel that a narrator should look things like this up if they’re not sure...
Anyway! Love this book muchly, so much so that I got the audiobook for whispersync so I could be somewhat productive and not lose my day curled up and reading. Definite recommend :)

Not really the whole story, but a good start
As with many series in this genre, this feels like the start of the story, rather than a story in itself - the appetizer rather than a main course. Also like others in this genre, the romance is borderline psychotic. The male protagonist is your traditional alpha-hole with stalker/violent/controlling tendencies but he's just "so HOT" right? Our heroine is, of course, forgiving of his foibles given he's HOT and misses his mum, but shows a disturbing sort of hormone-driven short term amnesia - describing him as "never cruel" only a few hours after he essentially tortures her. If you can accept that this is all just fantasy and ignore the burning red flags this character dynamic raises - the rest is fun! Her wards are entertainingly snarky and our female protagonist has a dry wit similar to the Leveling Up Series. The narrator is good - though her Irish accent is as predictably terrible as they are in most American audiobooks - and voices the characters well. I will read the next one, but if it's a chapter rather than a book - I'm giving up.

Ok story; questionable narration.
Were I not on holiday, I probably wouldn't have finished this. The story itself was ok but the narrators "Irish" accents boardered on offensive. As such, my issues with the characters themselves were probably amplified by the accents, though the scenes in the bar were certainly a tad naff regardless.

This story is 10 hours in reading. Of all the aspects of the story only one is good, well, at least funny. Why all the high ratings? The story would be acceptable IF the reader/listener had no expectations. AND IF the relationship between "mother" and "children" weren´t a case for child protection committee. High strung, dramatic and easily crying, add seriously bad and risky decision making skills. Please someone tell the author those are not words one wants to apply to a heroine of a story when the major role is taking care of children in risky situations. People like that can not even take care of themselves and only add unacceptable emotional risk to the lives of the children around them. Please give these children another home.
The only good part of the story is the comic relieve the children´s comments make. All the rest is just BAD or uninteresting.

Bring it on!
I usually save my audio books for listening to during walks or trips in the car, but this book, had my attention at any available awake time I had. Breene, I truly love your writing style and story lines. Gotta go, got a date with the next book in this series.

Excellent start to a series
‘Sin & Chocolate’ is book one in K.F. Breene’s Demigods of San Francisco series.
After read Ms Breene’s Darkness series and falling in love with Stefan & Sasha, I just knew I had to give this series a go. This authors ability to create such spectacular and unique worlds with characters that have wonderfully addictive, strong and witty personalities is skill that needs to be praised and acknowledged. So well done and a highly expl*sive start to a series.
Alexis is deep poor doing everything she can to take care of her two wards that the world had given up on. Being a magical living in a dual-society zone (where people with and without magic live) with a magical and non-magical teens to take care of means staying under the radar and not cause trouble. Having to make sacrifices to make sure to be able to afford the medication needed for Mordecai means wearing shoes that are old, ratty and full of holes. But being poor with no spare change doesn’t mean her life is horrible, she just needs to dream small. So when a Demigod almost runs her over and her life is turned upside down, and having the life she had is never going to be the same again. Especially when the Demigod doesn’t just want her magic abilities he wants her as well.
Now I am going to say this right off from the start, I do NOT condone to stalking. Ok! But I wouldn’t mind having a certain sexy Demigod following me and trying to help, even if it is a manipulative.
This is one heck of a start to a series, I had no idea what to expect when I went in and I’ll tell you this I was not disappointed. Although it is the start there is a lot of explaining and overload of information and backstory that needs to be explained. I still thoroughly enjoyed the flow of the story. The characters all bring a little something unique and wonderful to the story and dynamic flow.
Alexis puts up a strong front with being the “mother” figure to her wards. She is a character that is going to grow on you, I wasn’t sure about her at the beginning. I felt that she allowed Mordecai and Daisy control and tell her what to do to much, I understand that in their house it’s a democracy, but they are 15 & 14 year olds... I’m hoping that in the next book she has a really character growth.
Kieran will irk and annoy you in the beginning. But his character is a little misunderstood, very closed off and careful to open up and trust people he doesn’t know. The guy has mummy and daddy issues so give him a bit of a break. He try’s to do right by Alexis, Mordecai and Daisy but it’s misguided and manipulative. His six though, will you over in no time.
I can’t wait to see what’s next for Alexis and Kieran, I’ve enjoyed this book and hope that the series continues to intrigue me as this book has.

awesome narration
I listen to a lot of audio books and Ms Hvam is one of the best narrators I've come across.
Her tone for this book is so on point, it's made an already good book absolutely amazing.
This is actually my third listen of this series and I just had to give props - in case anyone was unsure about trying it.
I love to read, but some books I prefer to listen to because the narrator managed to give it that extra something that puts it above others. Especially when I'm looking for a feel good, comfort read.
Well done.
Oh, and yeah - K.F. Breene hit it out of the park with this series. Five 👍👍👍👍👍 all around 😃

Wonderful Start to an Exciting New Series
Well this was a wonderful start to an exciting new series. I love the lead female character, and her wards are adorable.
I wasn't a huge fan of the lead male character and his "poor me" attitude, but that could also be because I have issues with Irish men.
The sex scenes were delicious. Honestly, I can forgive much when the intimacy is so well written.
The narrator does a good job of drawing you in and for a female narrator she does a good job of the males characters.
