Story
Anna was never anything like those "real" runners on telly, but when she read about New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometer-long Te Araroa Trail, she began to wonder...perhaps being a "real" runner was overrated. Maybe she could just run it anyway? The Pants of Perspective is a witty, colorful, and at times painfully raw account of a journey to the edge of what a woman believes herself to be capable of. It is a coming-of-age story that will lead you on a roller-coaster ride through fear, vulnerability, courage, and failure.

Story
First came the boom - the loud, deep, unapologetic bellow that seemed to erupt from the very core of the Earth. Eerily, the majestic high-rise slowly leaned to the south. On the 78th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower, no alarms sounded, and no one had information about what had happened at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001. Blind since birth, Michael couldn't see a thing, but he could hear the sounds of shattering glass, falling debris, and terrified people flooding around him and his guide dog, Roselle.

Abby Stein was raised in a Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, isolated in a culture that lives according to the laws and practices of 18th century Eastern Europe, speaking only Yiddish and Hebrew and shunning modern life. Stein was born as the first son in a dynastic rabbinical family, poised to become a leader of the next generation of Hasidic Jews. But Abby felt certain at a young age that she was a girl. She orchestrated a personal exodus from ultra-Orthodox manhood to mainstream femininity - a radical choice that forced her to leave her home, her family, her way of life.

In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

It took Jacob years to discover that being "a sissy" isn't something to be ashamed of. It's a source of pride.

Publisher's Summary
A memoir-in-essays from disability advocate and creator of the Instagram account @sitting_pretty Rebekah Taussig, processing a lifetime of memories to paint a beautiful, nuanced portrait of a body that looks and moves differently than most.
Growing up as a paralyzed girl during the '90s and early 2000s, Rebekah Taussig only saw disability depicted as something monstrous (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), inspirational (Helen Keller), or angelic (Forrest Gump). None of this felt right; and as she got older, she longed for more stories that allowed disability to be complex and ordinary, uncomfortable and fine, painful and fulfilling.
Writing about the rhythms and textures of what it means to live in a body that doesn’t fit, Rebekah reflects on everything from the complications of kindness and charity, living both independently and dependently, experiencing intimacy, and how the pervasiveness of ableism in our everyday media directly translates to everyday life.
Disability affects all of us, directly or indirectly, at one point or another. By exploring this truth in poignant and lyrical essays, Taussig illustrates the need for more stories and more voices to understand the diversity of humanity. Sitting Pretty challenges us as a society to be patient and vigilant, practical and imaginative, kind and relentless, as we set to work to write an entirely different story.

AMPLIFY this type of constructive, imaginative, and uplifting voice!!
Taussig’s words obliterate the distance between a rich life of experiences that so many of us would never bother peeking into. “Disabled? Me? Never! Why do I need to add this perspective to my repertoire?!” As caustically impudent as that sounds, it’s simple truth. We think our bodies and capabilities as infallible except to age and why would us with able bodied fret about something as far away as old age?! Well, Taussig presents an emotionally accessible, humorous, and educational journey that removes any doubt as to why accessibility and disability belongs in society’s evolving dialogues of inclusion and representation. I am so glad my mind was stretched because her insights are embedded in my mind. Thank you, Rebekah!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Must read for every person. Taussig gives the reader an inside look at the current state of accessibility and offers her insight in the most delightfully well written (and narrated) way. It is very important for all types of bodies to be able to see themselves represented in an uplifting way that celebrates their unique abilities and empowers them rather than treating them as less than others.

INTERESTING! AUDACIOUS!! INSIGHTFUL!!!
I bought this audiobook as a wedding present to myself, having just married my disabled sweetheart, to have a look into the world of the disabled and I was not disappointed.
It was an interesting read from start to finish. I read some chapters twice, so I could learn and laugh again.

I look forward to the sequel of the ongoing story...... You know what I mean Rebekah. 😀

A worldview-changing book that we all need to read
I wish I was a writer just so I could express how much I loved this book. I thought it would be a book about disability - but while it does contain stories from Rebekah's experience of living and making her place in the world as a disabled person, it breaks down the imaginary barrier between "disabled" and "non-disabled". It shows how accessibility favours all of us; how adapting to the needs of disabled people (which needs to be done by the way, and isn't done nearly enough - stop using accessible changing rooms and install more ramps please, for starters!) isn't just about rectifying a wrong that exists in the world, it can also take us to a place where we begin creating a world that embraces our diversity, and by supporting the needs of our changing, suffering, ageing bodies, allows all of us to make our contribution to society from our unique perspectives. Everybody needs to read this book - it will be in all of my family and friends' Christmas stockings this year. Go read this book, now.

Everyone should read this book.
This book expanded my thinking about disability and the way society interacts with other disabled people and disabilities outside my lived experience.
Rebekah’s narration sets this book up to be very accessible to comprehend quite complex topics and learn along the way. The mix between personal stories and research topics is brilliantly done. Rebekah also includes further resources and materials at the end which is a great bonus!
Sitting Pretty is an accessible resource that I can definitely see myself coming back too over and over again.

Thank you Rebekah! Your words have lit a fire under me and my ongoing goals to be LISTENED to and that I DESERVE space in this world as a Disabled, Queer, Non- Binary, POC. That my words, experiences and story matter. So much of what you expressed, shared and opened up about in these words of yours are things I’ve felt word by word and more! Thankful to you and thank you to you for this book. Thank you for challenging the status quo, recognising your privilege while highlighting the marginalisation and barriers you’ve had to overcome to get where you are today! It’s absolutely extraordinary the similar thoughts we’ve had growing up and wondering if life would ever amount to anything when you’re young and complexly disabled and chronically ill. Rebekah, I don’t know if you’ll ever really read or see these words but YOU GIVE ME HOPE (not in an eww #inspoporn kinda way) but I GENUINELY everywhere how I survive it to another birthday, to another milestone, to another goal this body of mine - let alone be successful, happy and thriving. So thank you for your resilience, your story and for sharing it so beautifully with the world. With love and best wishes for you, Otto & Micah’s wonderful, beautiful life together! 💖 (from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺- Akii (@adventuress.akii)
