Publisher's Summary

Soar into a breathtaking world of heroes and unicorns as you’ve never seen them before in this fantastical middle grade debut perfect for fans of the Percy Jackson and Eragon series!

Skandar Smith has always yearned to leave the Mainland and escape to the secretive Island, where wild unicorns roam free. He’s spent years studying for his Hatchery exam, the annual test that selects a handful of Mainlander thirteen-year-olds to train to become unicorn riders. But on the day of Skandar’s exam, things go horribly wrong, and his hopes are shattered…until a mysterious figure knocks on his door at midnight, bearing a message: the Island is in peril and Skandar must answer its call.

Skandar is thrust into a world of epic sky battles, dangerous clashes with wild unicorns, and rumors of a shadowy villain amassing a unicorn army. And the closer Skandar grows to his newfound friends and community of riders, the harder it becomes to keep his secrets—especially when he discovers their lives may all be in graver danger than he ever imagined.

You HAVE to listen to this book!

Skandar has only ever wanted to be a unicorn rider, but on the day of the exam to become a rider, he's not even allowed to take the exam. However, someone shows up that night to take him to the island with the rider academy. Still not sure what is happening, Skandar begins his time at the academy by learning that his type of magic is hated and feared by everyone. But why? And what would happen to him if anyone found out? And just how does the mysterious figure of The Weaver fit in with everything?

I loved this book. Though it was an academy book, there was actually limited time in classes. Though we got to see some of the classes, most of the interactions were between Skandar and his friends, and their friendships, and the trials and tribulations with their unicorns, are what drove the story. The mystery that is eventually unraveled was also a good one. The clues that were provided were done in such a way that one might be able to figure things out before the big reveal, but the importance of the big reveal isn't so much about the big reveal as it is about the reactions the characters have to the big reveal.

The author did a wonderful job of developing the characters alongside the story and combining all of that with the worldbuilding. This was one of the few books in secondary worlds that didn't get lost in info dumps. The worldbuilding was provided through conversation and interaction, rather than lectures or long discourses. With the way this story ended, I look forward to continuing to follow Skandar and his friends as they continue in their education at the academy. I don't think it's too much to say that this book is as unique as the Harry Potter series, and I hope that it will do just as well in popularity.

The audiobook, which was narrated David Dawson, was an absolutely wonderful listen. You could hear the fun that Dawson was having as he read the story in his voice, and he injected so much feeling into his reading that I know this is a story that I will be listening to again, just to listen to Dawson narrate it.

Unexpectedly Great!

When I tell you I wasn’t sold on the whole different unicorns theme, that isn’t an overstatement. I had this in my library for months before I took a chance and read it . The rave reviews are deserved and all I can say is , I wish I’d downloaded it when it first came out and didn’t wait this long to listen to it . It’s a very good start to a series and the unicorn bit is just one cool part of the book !! This book is about so much more than that ! It’s about friendship, adventure, magic , betrayal and heartbreak. The characters develop throughout the story and the combination of everything is so well Put together . Its such a fresh idea from this new author but has familiar aspects we all love in a good fantasy story and it had me hooked after the first couple chapters just like when I read Fablehaven , HP , or Nevermoor . However, this book stands all on its own, and isn’t similar except for the fact that it’s well written and I enjoyed it . I’m so glad I gave it a chance .I absolutely loved it and I can’t wait till next year when book 2 comes out !!

A Nice Tale

A relatable protagonist. A straight on plot. If I be bold in saying it's going to be brother against sister next round.

Bloodthirsty Unicorns? - Yes, please.

This book was wonderful! Our whole family enjoyed listening to this. Steadman has created such a unique world. It has just enough peril to keep you on the edge of your seat (and listening). But it doesn't have gratuitous violence or get very graphic. We can't wait for the next book!

Skandar and the Unicorn their might be the best book I’ve ever read!

Usually I enjoy the books I find on audible but this book wasn’t just enjoyed it was an amazing, thrill seeking, and hard to compare.

It’s hard to recommend anything to a book that is full of such adventures and possibilities but there is something to keep in mind while writing: Try not to change the characters the fit the books change the books to fit the characters so that people can connect with the characters.
(Although it’s fine to let them evolve.)

I made this review because I just wanted to express how much I love this book and how well the author made it.
