Publisher's Summary

When a move to a new house coincides with his baby sister's illness, Michael's world seems suddenly lonely and uncertain. Then, one Sunday afternoon, he stumbles into the old, ramshackle garage of his new home and finds something magical. A strange creature - part owl, part angel, a being who needs Michael's help if he is to survive.

With his new friend Mina, Michael nourishes Skellig back to health, while his baby sister languishes in the hospital. But Skellig is far more than he at first appears, and as he helps Michael breathe life into his tiny sister, Michael's world changes forever....

Skellig won the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children's Book Award and is now a major Sky1 feature film, starring Tim Roth and John Simm. David Almond is also winner of the 2010 Hans Christian Andersen award.

Wonderful!

I was 13 when I read this the first time; at 33 it is still a story that puts life into perspective. I will be sharing this with my children.

Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!

I LOVE this story and I have only recently found it again. I remember reading it in school and then getting the audio cassette and listening to it going to sleep. David Almond has a true gift for writing and reading, his accent lending this story reality. This story also got me hooked on William Blake's 'Tiger Tiger'. I STRONGLY recommend to everyone over 8 years (may be a little deep for younger children).

Beautiful book. An unusual story with parts to make you laugh, cry and wonder. I am sixty years old and I loved this book to bits.

Still amazing

I first heard this when I was probably 10 years old. I am now 26 and this still is one the best things I have ever read. Having listened to 'My name is Mina, it felt appropriate to continue on with Skellig immediately after. Great decision both amazing, both extraordinary!

Loved it!

I loved this book and loved David Almond's reading of it, gasping out loud in a coffee shop as the story drew to a close. I loved reading as a child but struggle to relax with a book since having my own children and having a long commute; I fall asleep instead! I'd heard of Skellig but didn't know anything about it. I read a David Almond book on a course last year and loved it. I loved the humour and the tone. I decided to treat myself to Audible and am finally getting to enjoy the books I desperately want to read.

a wonderful book, so glad i found it

This is one of those books that i regret not reading when i was younger. I loved every part if it. even the emotionally difficult parts. its very down to earth as well as being Extraordinary. Shows life as it is, with real people, and their reactions.

Imaginative and inspirational, David Almond captures the wonder of a mysterious encounter with an extraordinary creature.

Wonderful!!

Being narrated by the author somehow added to the authenticity of the story. David Almond's understanding of the story, characters and setting as he imagined it, is beautifully portrayed in the narration.
The story is most definitely one of my favourites and it was a pleasure to read it with my year 5 class, who were also fully engaged. The story inspired our newspaper report writing about a strange mysterious creature / human being discovered.
Definitely recommend
