Imagine a 1980s world of sumptuous hotel rooms, restaurants, New York City penthouses, and the powerful men who move easily between these pinnacles of luxury. They are music producers, rock stars, writers, and restaurateurs. They are household names like Billy Joel, Art Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, and Sting. And yet, each man has an entire aspect to his life that he doesn’t talk about publicly—his depression, his rocky marriage, his feelings of shame and failure, his private loss of faith. And now: The phone rings. Imagine the woman who has each of these men at her beck and call.

Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Publisher's Summary
Audible are delighted to present Sleeping Beauty, a unique listening experience for all the family to enjoy over the Christmas season. This exclusive new audio drama has been created in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra and is inspired by Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet music. Marty Ross’s reimagining of the famous fairy story draws on the worlds of folktale and the Brothers Grimm, while the LSO's specially-commissioned new recording, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, weaves through the drama like a rich and majestic film score.
Lacking a legitimate heir, King Lothar (Stephen Fry) brings home a baby girl, Aurora (Phoebe Dynevor). His wife, Queen Ishbel, agrees to raise the child as her own and Princess Aurora grows up to become a beautiful, beloved and free-spirited young woman. But a shadow hangs over the kingdom. Devastated at her loss, Aurora’s mother Cara (Rochenda Sandall) takes her revenge by casting a terrible curse upon the princess and despite her sister Lila's efforts, the spell proves too powerful to break completely. Instead, when the fatal hour arrives, the whole Kingdom falls into an enchanted slumber, until Aurora's true love, Peter, a woodcutter's son (Adam Hugill), sets out on a perilous quest to rescue her.
Also starring: David Ahmad, Karen Bartke, Samantha Beart, Raghad Chaar, Amy Darton, Alyssa Kyria, David Holt, Simon Kane, Harry Myers and Kenton Thomas.

It's ok
I have read some of the original rendition of this story and it not close at all. It is an adaptation at best. The addition of the mother and taking out the fairy was off. I didn't like how Peter was strange and weak frighted at first. It seems to point to an empower women story and bash on men being men.
The performance along with the music was not done well. They clashed more often then not.

Sleeping beauty
So I am a purist. I love the original story. I believe the production and dramatization was great but some of the modernization of it bothered me. I don’t think we need to try to “fix” the past; rather, we can learn to see what was good and grow from what was bad.
Since this was still set in the time of the past, I wish they would have kept it as the original story had it.
JMO Truly a good production and worth the time to listen

Too many dream sequences, it got really boring
I really wanted to love this and I made it through 1.5 hours so I wanted to finish it. But I found myself bored and distracted, especially during Peter's repetitive dream sequences. The acting was great and so was the music. I think it was the writing/story that I found tiresome. Peter would say something, then have a dream about it. Then describe something else, then have another dream about it. I couldn't finish it.

Too Much Going On
I struggled to even listen for a few minutes. It was reminiscent of trying to listen to an audio drama while the radio is on full blast. The orchestra was too loud and playing over the actors. Being neurodivergent this was anxiety inducing and overwhelming I kept going back before reading the synopsis and trying to find overlying apps that may be playing over Audible. Not a fan.

Sleeping Beauty
Music coupled with narration was quite brilliant. Also liked being able to see things through a decidedly feminist glass … nice change from “traditional” fairy tails. Does well portraying historical reasons for why & how some women were characterized, demeaned & persecuted as witches & enchantresses. It was sometimes tough to follow the action, especially during the dream sequences with the various fairies. Confusion & lack of clarity around those points dropped my ratings to 4 stars from 5. Highly recommend to families who may want an additional or alternative to the now standard Nut Cracker performance during the holidays.

Good but how much vine cutting.
The story is old. Got it.
Performances good i think, especially Auroa.
Overall - could have shortened greatly on the time it takes Peter to get to the castles. How often did they really have to portray Peter fighting more attacking vines? Other than that it was enjoyable. I can see a ballet in my mind’s eye while it played.
One note for parents - the vocabulary may cause a little confusion for younger ones. In addition

Cacophony of sounds makes listening uncomfortable
This is a gorgeous, wonderful piece of music, performed by top notch musicians. It is also a fresh take on an old tale, told by some of the best narrators around.
So... Why oh why did they choose to combine it? I dare you to listen to the first 10 minutes and not feel extremely uncomfortable with the cacophony of sounds. It's a mess. You can try to listen to the story, but the loud bangs and thumps from the orchestra will interfere. OR you can listen to the music, and be constantly distracted by the people talking over it. It is like mixing a wonderful bowl of sweet ice cream with a bowl of caviar. Both lovely and exquisite, but horrible when all mashed up. I wish there was a way to separate the two tracks because I'd listen to them on their own in a heartbeat. What a shame.

Awful!
Difficult to follow this reimagining of a classic fairytale. Wordy, to say the least and the accents did not add anything to either the plot or the performance. As for the music - it was like trying to listen to a book while the next door neighbours were playing their music programme on full volume. I thought this might be a nice seasonal treat and can only say it’s made me feel both disappointed and at times rather irritated. Sorry to be so ‘bah humbug’ but sometimes that’s what a review has to be.

A beautiful fairy story for Christmas
Does anyone recall the 1965 MFP album production of Alice in Wonderland? It starred Karen Dotrice, Dirk Bogard, Franky Howerd, Bruce Forsyth and so on and so on. That has remained a classic in my family for 56 years. We all know every word. I think Sleeping Beauty will be another like this. This was captivating, entertaining and a joy to listen to thanks to the LSO and some fabulous sound recording and effects.

Someone turn it into a movie!
Wow! What a stunning version of the classic fairytale. BE WARNED this is not a sweet fluffy take it’s got some dark elements. Which I love as a childfree adult. It’s a version truly made for everyone I have recommended it to my friends. BUT if you are buying it specifically for younger kids ( I’d say 6 or under) they may get a bit spooked. It’s nothing too explicit but there are STAKES in this version. The hero and heroine really have to fight to earn this happy ending. It feels part fairytale, part classical epic with a bit of Tolkien.
The performances are great. Shout out to Adam Hugill who plays Peter the hero character and Rochenda Sandall as Cara our villainess who seems to be playing a combination of Medea and Lady Macbeth to create a truly complex character. But the real star here is Marty Ross who wrote/directed this adaptation. The choices he made in adaptating what could have been a very simple fairytale make this stand out. Cara is an incredibly sympathetic tragic villian. Princess Aurora is an interesting developed character and the relationship between her and Peter is beautiful. The action sequences feel earned and full of tension.
Even though you know how it will end it feels like a true hero’s journey. It will stick in your head long after it’s over. If any of the big movie studios are listening I would highly recommend turning this version into a live action film so more could experience it. It could be incredible. But wow Audible is really delivering top notch content.
