Publisher's Summary

From the internationally best-selling author of My Lovely Wife and He Started It comes a twisted, entertaining novella about a dog walker swept into a criminal investigation when her client winds up dead.

Shelby works as a dog walker in northern California, and she’s just finished up her bi-weekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner - Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company - lying on the bathroom floor, dead. A detective arrives on the scene. As she interviews Shelby, the body is inspected by a medical examiner, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.

Dear Listener,

What inspired me to write this story?
" Sleeping Dogs Lie was inspired by my brother, who owns a dog walking/sitting company. He used to tell me I should write about a dog walker, so I finally did! Although I currently live in New Orleans, he lives in Marin County, California, the same area where the story takes place. Marin is also where I grew up. Back then it was a sleepy little suburb, but the Silicon Valley explosion changed all that! Now when I visit, it’s filled with tech employees, organic restaurants, and people who are a lot like the characters of Todd and Regina Burke. All the places in the story are real—the shopping center, the coffee shop locations, the dog park, and even the subdivision of Bel Marin Keys. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed writing it!" – Samantha Downing, creator of Sleeping Dogs Lie

A must-listen for dog lovers!

Samantha Downing is one of my favorite authors, so I immediately listened to this very clever short mystery about a dog walker and a murdered owner of one of her clients.
This was a very clever story with well planned and thought through details. I really enjoyed it.

Short & to the point.

Good story. The performances were great. Interesting. Decent plot. I might check out more by this author. Things, they’re not what they seem.

Wow!!! Great listen!!

This story was a joy!! The mystery is an enigma wrapped in a paradox and as the story unfolds, I kept saying, no way, no way, no way. Then, kaboom, WAY!

The narrators delivered. In spades!

Wrong on several levels

As someone who’s grow up in animal rescue NO!!!! I’m shocked at the good reviews for this. The narration was ok, but the story itself was mind bogglingly absurd.

I’m sorry but wth?!? Having un neutered dogs running loose in dog parks is fine but crating a dog is not?? One adds to overpopulation. The other is a part of a dogs natural instinct to seek confined spaces when feeling insecure.

Spoilers below

****

Imperfect dog owners deserve to be executed bc they crate their dogs and feed them the wrong kind of food?!?
A vigilante who stalks people, executes them and rehomes their dogs - and then notes that she’s *watching* the new adopters thus implying she’ll kill them too.
I’m all for animal rescue but nonsense like this is just wrong on every level.

Great little novella

This short story by Samantha Downing is currently free to Audible members in the Plus catalogue. It's a fun crime story involving a dog walker who takes her charge home after a work and finds it's owner dead.

At just over 2 hours long this packs a lot in. As a dog lover and crime thriller addict I was in heaven and this little novella had enough twists to keep me happy, and with a VERY satisfying ending!. I'd love to see a full length novel featuring the detective.

Excellent narration too. Perfect if you have a couple of spare hours!

Great narration but a carbon copy of a film...

how to do this without spoilers? I guess it's true there are no new ideas... even references the film it is a plot copy of, so why bother? I guess you could argue the protagonist's motivation is unique. also breaks commandments 1 and 7 of detective fiction. sigh. I long for another Gillian Flynn short story...

Perfect Short Story

A great short story that can be, and should be, listened to in one sitting. It was great with a twist that was well executed, and the story was well written. I liked how it was formatted from different points of view, and that the story was open-ended but wrapped up all the main points. Definitely worth a listen
