Publisher's Summary

What happens when the strong, ambitious man you married fades into a stranger with an illness no doctor can diagnose?

When Jessica Zimmerman’s husband Brian contracted a mysterious illness that left him 60 pounds underweight and a prisoner to their master bathroom, she had no idea the journey of self-discovery on which they were both about to embark.

As Jessica and Brian worked to solve the riddle of his illness, they also had a harder question to answer: Was their marriage even worth saving?

Sleeping with a Stranger is a searing, honest, and hilarious memoir about learning how to love even in the darkest of moments and how to find yourself when the compass is lost.

As Jessica’s business takes off, and the demands of being the sole provider increase, she begins to discover who she was always meant to be, even if that goes against the Southern culture in which she was raised.

Bucking up against old ideas and even older Southern traditions, Jessica’s story is also a rallying cry for women coming to terms with their trauma in order to find healing.

Sleeping with a Stranger is a testament to the power of healing - how we can heal our bodies, our spirits, our relationships with others, and ultimately, ourselves. As Brian finally recovers, and Jessica recognizes that she can never go back to the old script that so many women follow, they begin to negotiate a new marriage and learn the greatest lesson of all: We can reclaim our true selves at any time.

The book I didn’t know I needed

This book was everything I didn’t know I needed. I found myself in Jessica throughout the entire book and answers to some of the reasons I am the way I am. It had me laughing, crying, and cheering her and Brian on the entire way. Hearing her read it made me feel like she was right in front of me telling it. I’m so thankful she shared her truth with the world.

Meh

I will start by saying that I am a huge fan of memoirs. I love getting myself lost in another human being’s story. However, this one definitely fell short. I am so happy that Jessica and Brian are proud of their marriage story and that Jessica found herself through the process. However that is the shortest, most rushed part of the book. She spends an excruciating amount of time on a middle school, then high school relationship, then even more detail about how she couldn’t find her niche in owning a business. None of it is extraordinary, or even really entertaining. It kinda just feels like “okay when are the things happening...”

The story about her husband’s illness is interesting, unique, and the best part of the book. But I wouldn’t say it’s worth a 6 hour read.

The description focuses on Jessica’s struggle to decide if she wants to fix her marriage or not after her husband gets sick, but that’s not really even focused on much beyond one description of a therapy session. So if that’s intriguing to you it’s barely the story.

The author can come off as annoying at times and sometimes you just want to shake her for saying she’s not attracted to her husband anymore after he fell ill. But, that kind of raw truth is vulnerable and difficult, and I applaud her for her honesty. I’m sure it was not easy. But something about the message being how hard you’re working now that your husband can’t work because he has a debilitating disease, evokes a bit of entitlement that’s hard to like. At one point she even says something along the lines of “so now it’s all on ME to take care of us??” Though she later admits that she knows she was looking at this the wrong way, and was just taking out her own frustrations on him, it still evokes a kind of entitled bratty attitude that’s not relatable to me, and was not enough to take me through a 6 + hour book.

I wanted there to be some big message about Jessica realizing she needed to take care of herself and not only her husband and children, which she eventually reached but rushed through it and before I knew it, the book was over and I was left wanting more reflection. For a book that focused so much on tiny details, it seemed a disservice to rush through the takeaway of loving yourself first in your marriage. It would have really put the book together.

Overall, the book is not anything extraordinary and not worth a credit, in my opinion.

This Book Is A Game-changer

I’m not sure if it’s Jessica’s honesty, vulnerability or her awesome delivery but this book has been a game changer for me. If you are looking for a read that will motivate you to look at the positives in your own life and how you can improve your own story, then give it a try. I’ve followed Jess on social media for years which in turn helped me in business more than I can say, but this read has actually helped me in my day to day life. Highly recommend.

A story for our time

This story exposes lessons for us all to soak in.

How did you do this behind the scenes and give so much to us in your work, Jessica?
I am more in ore of your strength and determination now than in my journey with you through BBB and the mastermind in 2018.

Thank you for this gritty, real and true love story. So brave and I am sure, it will change lives
