Story
LA-based English indie filmmaker Alex Levitin reluctantly takes a job in New Zealand to save the "worst movie ever", Shezan: Mistress of the Forest. Things might go easier for her if she didn't almost run over the standoffish, beautiful local cop on her first day in town. And it'd really help if her film set wasn't being mysteriously sabotaged. When Ika Whenu's Senior Constable Sam Keegan isn't trying to stamp out a motorcycle gang drug problem afflicting her town, she's publicly slamming everything about the exploitative film and the Hollywood blow-ins making it.

Ambitious Daily Sentinel journalist Lauren King is chaffing on LA’s vapid social circuit, reporting on glamorous A-list parties while sparring with her rival - the formidable, icy Catherine Ayers. Ayers is an ex-Washington political correspondent who suffered a humiliating fall from grace, and her acerbic, vicious tongue keeps everyone at bay. Everyone, that is, except knockabout Iowa girl King, who is undaunted and unimpressed and gives as good as she gets.

Story
Life has become a farcical mess for icy British A-lister Elizabeth Thornton. America's most-hated villain stars in a top-rated TV medical drama that she hates. Now, she's been romantically linked to her perky, new co-star, Summer, due to the young woman's clumsiness. As a closeted actress, that's the last thing Elizabeth needs. If she could just get her dream movie role, life would be so much better. The only problem is that the eccentric French film-maker offering it insists on meeting her "girlfriend", Summer, first.

Ambitious ice queen and corporate lawyer Felicity Simmons has spent her life focused on one thing: scuttling up the career ladder. She's achingly close to taking charge of a media empire for her boss when she's sent to investigate a South Bronx charity that helps homeless people's pets. Has the charity made off with her boss's generous donation? And, who on earth is that gorgeous soft-butch veterinarian who looks as if she could toss a Shetland pony over one shoulder? Not that Felicity has any interest in some opinionated Amazon or her adorable fleabag of a dog.

Seven hours and 47 minutes of pure fabulousness!
The gift of having all of these short stories on audiobook is truly indescribable. Lee Winter's books are some of the best in lesfic and in each of these short stories, we get wonderful glimpses into the current or future lives of some of our favorite ice queens.
Lee Winter said she believes this may be Angela Dawe's best work and I can't disagree. What I loved the most is how Dawe revisited some of the characters that she previously voiced and tweaked them. Like Maddie from The Brutal Truth. Her voice has a lower register and the Aussie accent is more restrained. Ridiculously sexy. Wow.
When DC Met Iowa. OMG. Hilarious and just perfect. I mean, really.
Number Five? First-Class Villains? I could go on and on about the deliciousness of every single one but I'd run out of space.
I do want to specifically mention Love is Not Nothing because it is a short story that takes place after Requiem for Immortals, an audiobook of Winter's that Dawe didn't narrate. Dawe didn't attempt to do Requiem's voice with an Aussie accent, here which was a solid choice. This was an interpretation of the character all her own. She brilliantly captured the menacing, panther-like, sexually charged presence of Natalya/Requiem. It was a thrill to get her take on it. And there was a completely new voice for Alison that I've not heard Dawe do before! For those of us that respect Winter's choice to find an Aussie narrator for the audiobook, it was such a treat to hear Dawe's performance of the short.
Absolutely terrific! As much as I cursed Audible for the too-delayed release, it was 1000 percent worth the wait!

Excellent Stories, Fantastic Performance
A marvelous collection of stories! Lee Winter teases out more depth of her characters. A moment in time; a decision to be made. What are the factors, what are the obstacles, and how will our sheroes move forward? Such a treasure of enriching insights!
And Angela Dawe is, as always, wonderful with her character depictions, those inflections or hesitations which reveal brashness or vulnerability.
An excellent pairing!

Lee Winter is always a must read/listen. Add my audible lord and savior Angela Dawe???? heaven.
I’ve listed the order of stories + what book they’re from + the main characters and their ages if mentioned or i knew from reading their full stories.
HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL:
1 - Five Times Felicity Met Elena
(from The Brutal Truth/The Awkward Truth series)
Felicity Simmons 23 25 28-30 36 ( + Elena Bartell)
2 - Aliens of New York
(from The Brutal Truth/The Awkward Truth series)
Madeline “Maddie” Grey + Elena Bartell
3 - The Brutal Lie
(from The Brutal Truth/The Awkward Truth series)
Madeline “Maddie” Grey + Elena Bartell
4 - Skye Storm’s Invite Absolutely Everyone Ultimate Pool Party
(from Breaking Character)
Summer Haze 30 + elizabeth thornton 39
5- The Friend
Dani Sullivan + Roe Tapoo (not positive on spelling, pretty sure they’re both in their 30s)
6 - Number Five
(from Hotel Queens)
June Menzies 62 + Monique Carson 40-50s
7 - Flashbang
(from The Red Files/Under Your Skin series)
Lauren King + Catherine Ayers
8 - When DC Met Iowa
(from The Red Files/Under Your Skin series)
Suzette “Suze” Barringer >30 + Cynthia Redwell >40
9 - First Class Villains
(from Requiem for Immortals)
Natalya “Requiem” Tsvetnenko 45 + characters/villains from other books
10 - love is not nothing
(from Requiem for Immortals)
Emily Alison Ryan 38 (goes by her middle name/Alison) + Natalya “Requiem” Tsvetnenko 45
I’ve only read Breaking Character, Hotel Queens, and Requiem for Immortals so I loved the peek into other stories. Such a variety even though they all fall under the ice queen category.

For fans of Ms Winter and those who will be
Storytelling at Ms Winter's level is hard to find. Having listened to over 1,800 audio books, I hope you find this recommendation useful and not just the "gushing on" of a fan. Pairing her works with the impeccable Ms Dawe? I'm left trying to find a way to add more stars.
I had previously bought all of Ms Winter's works that are noted at the end of each short story and had to have this one. All are equally recommended and will enhance your enjoyment of this title if read first. Any one of them can make you a fan is you are not already.

A Real Stunner of a Collection
As an avid reader of all things Lee Winter, I absolutely recommend this collection of short stories.
I loved getting little slices of many of the characters I've already grown to love plus a few extras that certainly have my attention now.
The romance was everything I've come to expect from this writer but the short story The Friend really made me sit up and pay attention. It was so well done, it felt like a window opened up into a families life with all the tangles of emotions and relationships. Honestly, this story alone should win an award.
That all said, if Lee Winter ever reads this, could you please write more of Elizabeth Thornton (or another English character) just so I can hear Angela Dawe do that accent more? Pretty Please?
