Publisher's Summary

There are few people who have been in the wrestling business longer than Jim Ross. And those who have made it as long as he has (half a century to be exact) probably made enemies or burned bridges. But that's just not JR.

Slobberknocker is the story of how an Oklahoman farm kid with a vivid imagination and seemingly unattainable dreams became "The Voice of Wrestling" to record TV audiences and millions of fans around the world.

Jim opens up about his life as an only child on a working farm, who became obsessed with professional wrestling having first seen it on his grandparents' TV. Even though the wrestling business was notoriously secretive and wary of "outsiders", he somehow got a foot in the door to start a historic career, one where he held almost every job in the business - from putting up the ring to calling matches, from driving his blind, drunk boss toward revenge to consoling two naked 600-pound brothers in the shower room after a rough match.

With all those adventures and responsibilities, he's also recognized as the man who built and nurtured a once-in-a-generation talent roster that took the WWE to new heights, including "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Brock Lesnar, and The Rock, to name a few. Listeners will finally get the opportunity to hear never-before-told stories about the politics, wackiness, and personalities of all the biggest stars.

But this isn't just a wrestling story. It's a story about overcoming adversity and achieving your dreams, as success did not come without significant costs and unforeseen challenges to JR, including multiple bouts of severe facial paralysis called Bell's palsy. Currently he is the host of the podcast The Ross Report.

Any fan of wrestling- from the territory days to today - will be enthralled with stories from the road and behind the scenes. Slobberknocker is the first time Ross tells his story - and you don't want to miss it!

Simply a blast from the past.

Good ol’ J.R. Has been the voice of my childhood. I have never enjoyed a book as much as I did this one. Even though you will never see this, thank you J.R.
Not only for sharing your story but reminding me to never give up. This is a must for any wrestling fan!

Better than it should be.

It is awkward listening to JR read his story at first. He is such a natural story teller it feels odd listening to him read as opposed too his free flowing podcast. Excellent stories will carry you through easily and it isn't the worst reading I've heard by far. More inside shop than I thought the company man would go and better than it should be lol.

Somewhat disappointed

Jim is the greatest announcer of all time for sure! I felt the book didn’t really go in depth about the wrestling business. I wanted more stories and behind the scenes stuff. It only covers his career up until WrestleMania 15. To Jim’s credit his career was so long so it would be hard to cover everything. Maybe a second book coming later? Hopefully! I would recommend this book for the wrestling fan who grew up listening and watching Jim. Over all I would give this book a 6 out of 10.

Positively Ruined for All Other Audiobooks

I am a lifelong WWE fan (somewhat unusual for a 35 year old female) and yet, so much of JR's story was unfamiliar to me. However, his voice was one that narrated a lot of happy memories from my childhood and I was excited to hear him voice over his own story. I enjoyed every moment of this book, but the icing on the cake was hearing that familiar voice, the intonation, the excitement, the joy and the sadness. What a treat! By a mile, the best Audible purchase I've ever made. We love you, JR!

Insightful autobiography

Mr. Ross delivers an open, honest perspective of a life lived.

The way he owns the regrets of his life are valuable lessons to those seeking to be successful.

He also provides us with his path to success but states clearly that his path isn't everyone's path.

The admission of the failures and lessons he was privileged to learn forged his path to discovering where he belonged.

So many of us do not land where we feel we were meant to be. Mr. Ross has.

Thank you to all involved in the process of bringing this autobiography to us.

The GOAT Voice of Pro Wrestling

This book was filled with great stories from JR's past time with various wrestling promotions as well as his time in the WWF/WWE. The book was even BETTER because HE narrated. Wonderful. Easy five stars.

Slobber knocker

I really enjoyed this book.
Having it read by the author isn’t always good to hear but Jim Ross really made me want to keep listening (just like he does whenever he’s doing his announcing for any promotion).
The performance is essential to me because audio is a huge part of my life, I’m blind and most of the books haven’t been available in accessible formats until recently.
I gave this rating because JR’s performance kept my attention throughout and to me that’s what audiobooks should always do, just like the original printed books are meant to do.
I look forward to the sequel.

A great listen that takes time to find its feet

As an avid WWF/WWE fan before and during the Attitude era - and one who has lost interest in wrestling completely since - this was a thoroughly enjoyable trip down memory lane.

You can almost hear Good Ol' JR grow in confidence as the book proceeds, so stick with it past the first 10 or so quick chapters as Ross finds his feet. When he's in full flight this book is wonderful. The anecdotes vary enormously and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the gritty business of the wrestling circuits of the 70s and 80s.

If you love (or just once loved) wrestling then this is a great listen.

Finally able to enjoy Audible

I am somebody who struggles with audio books.

I often lose focus which is a fault of my own and rarely the narrator's.

However, Jim Ross has a Southern smooth voice that I could listen to all day and it has brought me back to the medium; I revelled in listening to his tales, many of which are short, snappy and compelling. The personalities involved are often larger than life and the stories often stranger than fiction.

JR is humble, personable and wise and makes for an excellent storyteller. I look forward to listening to the sequel.

Good ol' JR lists his life

a great reading from the voice of wrestling, with some truly memorable highlights. my only criticism being that there isn't enough meat! the book felt like a really interesting highlight reel on a whistle stop tour of JRs life, leaving you wanting more. though I expect every chapter could've been half a book on its own. worth a listen, for sure.

Great story telling

This was an exceptional story about an exceptional man. As soon as I finished this one I had to move on to the next one.
The journey or a mans passion for a business he loved, the humble man comes through in this book. The highs the lows and battling spirit of a man that’s worked for everything he’s got.

A must listen for any wrestling fan

Having grown up listening to Jim Ross commentating on wwf/wcw, this book did not dissapoint, providing insight, anacdotes about many wrestling events, stories and wrestlers characters behind the curtain. Jim is always open and honest with his reflections of key events, maintaining his professionalism and integrity throughout, thouroughly enjoyed listening to this wrestling Legend.

Great insight into a legend's career

This was an interesting listen and it gives insight into how JR got into the business, as well as some fine nuggets about many icons of the industry i.e. Roddy Piper, Vince McMahon, even some great stories of Muhammad Ali, and the list goes on. Perfect for any wrestling fan. Will definitely pick up the second book.

from fan to the greatest commentator of all time. this book tells you about good ol J.
