Story
Ari Thór Arason is a local policeman whose tumultuous past and uneasy relationships with the villagers in an idyllically quiet fishing village in Northern Iceland - where no one locks their doors - continue to haunt him. The peace of this close-knit community is shattered by the murder of a policeman - shot at point-blank range in the dead of night in a deserted house. With a killer on the loose and the dark Arctic winter closing in, it falls to Ari Thór to piece together a puzzle that involves tangled local politics, a compromised new mayor, and a psychiatric ward.

Story
The only person who might have the answers to a baffling murder case is the victim's seven-year-old daughter, found hiding in the room where her mother died. And she's not talking. Newly-promoted, out of his depth, detective Huldar turns to Freyja for her expertise with traumatized young people. Freyja, who distrusts the police in general and Huldar in particular, isn't best pleased. But she's determined to keep little Margret safe. It may prove tricky. The killer is leaving them strange clues: warnings in text messages, sums scribbled on bits of paper, numbers on the radio.

Soon, they establish a link between the victim, Julie Stender, and her landlady, Esther de Laurenti, who’s a bit too fond of drink and the host of raucous dinner parties with her artist friends. In The Keeper of Lost Causes, Jussi Adler-Olsen introduced Detective Carl Mørck, a deeply flawed, brilliant detective newly assigned to run Department Q, the home of Copenhagen’s coldest cases. The result wasn’t what Mørck - or readers - expected, but by the opening of Adler-Olsen’s shocking, fast-paced follow-up, Mørck is satisfied with the notion of picking up long-cold leads. So he’s naturally intrigued when a closed case lands on his desk: A brother and sister were brutally murdered two decades earlier....

Publisher's Summary
Siglufjördur: an idyllically quiet fishing village in Northern Iceland where no one locks their doors - accessible only via a small mountain tunnel.
Ari Thór Arason: a rookie policeman on his first posting, far from his girlfriend in Reykjavík - with a past that he's unable to leave behind.
When a young woman is found lying half-naked in the snow, bleeding and unconscious, and a highly esteemed, elderly writer falls to his death in the local theater, Ari is dragged straight into the heart of a community where he can trust no one and secrets and lies are a way of life.
Past plays tag with the present and the claustrophobic tension mounts as Ari is thrust ever deeper into his own darkness - blinded by snow and with a killer on the loose. Taut and terrifying, Snowblind is a startling debut from an extraordinary new talent.

Unexpected and different
The telling of this story reminded me of Before the Fall. It's not exactly linear, not a lot of action or suspense, and the big reveal is deflating. However, I liked it. I liked it for teh same reasons I didn't love it. Examples:
Pro - A large group of characters with rich details and backgrounds
Con - Too many characters to follow
Pro - Not an easy who-done-it, keeps you intrigued until the end
Con - What is going on???
Pro - Lack of one single hero/heroine
Con - Do I like anyone in this book?
Pro - Can't wait to go to Iceland
Con - Not enough parkas in the world
All in all I rate this book a strong 3 stars. I liked it and would be willing to try another one from this author.

This is my idea of a perfect mystery
What did you love best about Snowblind?
Setting was a character in itself. Main character thoroughly likeable and believable. Interesting supporting characters, well developed. Mysteries were interesting and conclusion was believable.
What did you like best about this story?
There was no sexual violence, as with so many mysteries today. Possibility of accident and suicide was also considered tragic outcomes (not every death was a murder).
What about Will Damron’s performance did you like?
Did not detract from the story- barely noticed the narration, it was like I was reading the story in my head!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Relationship between the young couple raised a lot of interesting issues, left me feeling deeply for both of them.

Iceland setting is best part
We listened to this on a road trip around Iceland, including very near Siglurfjourdur, where this is set. That was really neat. The story itself keeps you listening, lots of characters, I'd say a 4 star story.

Ups and Downs
There's real potential here for this new writer from Iceland. I very much enjoyed the atmosphere - the listener can almost feel the cold and the claustrophobic nature of snow piling up, the darkness, the isolation described.
But, even considering that the city described was once known for its fish production, there are way too many obvious red herrings here. The mystery has ups and downs, and the conclusion is less than riveting and a little bit rushed.
Don't know how much of the occasional awkwardness of language is due to translation, but I hope additional works by this author (and I do hope there will be more) will flow more smoothly.
The narrator is quite good - I love his ease with the Icelandic place and people's names.

Slow, dull and plodding
This is ten hours of my life I will never get back. The writing is clumsy and amateurish. The plot takes forever and all the details about each character are ultimately pointless. And finally, the ending is pat and ridiculous. What a waste of time. Why on earth is this so popular?

I needed a heat blanket to read without shivering.
Good darkish cold mystery set in a place I'd never know but for this book. Not a watershed cop mystery but a good "Who done it?"... Which sometimes is rare these days. I enjoyed the book but It was not Spade or classic Noir but it had a complete story and characters and action. Pensive, well worth the while from a place a world away for me.

All Over the Place
Despite warning signs, I listened to the entire book. I kept reminding myself that it's a translation, so nuance and cultural differences could be affecting my enjoyment. But there were too many issues for me.
The point of view changes multiple times in confusing ways. We get to see in other characters' heads where they think menacingly about vague, unknown situations in a lazy attempt to misguide the reader.
There isn't really any mystery, so, about halfway through, the protagonist starts withholding information from the reader, saying things like, "I asked her the question I came to ask her," then cutting to the next chapter. Toward the end, he has entire conversations in this manner.
We get detailed histories of all of the characters, even though they don't affect the plot. This is all told to us, instead of the protagonist discovering it.
It seems to me the author wrote a bunch of unnecessary information in a disorganized way, trying to build suspense and mystery for a story that, in the end, is rather ordinary and expected.
