Really fun and makes the human side more interesti

The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I am reserving that rating for productions that reach the levels of the Monogatari audio books (nearly full casting, ambient tones/music, etc.).

However, the VA did a fantastic job varying her voice and bridging the gap, making it pretty easy to identify which characters were talking and to sound like that character might to the extent it doesn't break your immersion. A real workhorse. Excited for more more. WILL BUY.

Poorly adapted.

I love this story. I've read/watched 3 other adaptions of this story.
I think the narrator does a good job and has a fitting voice and enthusiasm for Kumoko.

This adaption has a couple major problems tho.

-List of skills.
This story goes very overboard on how many skills strong beings have.
This is fine in a written format where you can sort of glance at the skills fast without reading them fully.
This audio adaption seems to be going the way of always reading the full skill list.
This is an insane decision. How often and how much of the skills are read should've been heavily edited.

-Side stories.
This story does the thing of multiple stories that later come together later.
The original story did this too, but in that format it was easy to either skip them or read them later as you liked.
The side stories should be put in to their own books in this format since this story is divided in to short books like this.
The problem is that you get the start of a story for a character and then you don't hear about that character for the rest of the book or maybe even the next book. This problem is further made worse by the fact that the chapters aren't named.
In the webnovel it's very easy to see which chapter is about which storyline. So going back to refresh your memory of another storyline or reading all of that storyline later is easy and convenient.
In this format it would be very impractical.

-The translation.
There seems to have been some nuance lost in this translation.
Other translations of the story have kept more japanese words which in my opinion works better when it comes to names and skills especially with the occasional puns this story has.
One glaring example of this is the attack called "The morning spider" which is a nonsensical name.
On other translations it's called "Kumorning star" Which is both descriptive and punny.
Kumoko is often making weird noises. This translation tones the weirdness down a lot to the point where you might not even notice that she was making unusual noises.

I did enjoy this adaption of this story as well, but i think it should have been edited to work better in this form of story telling.

Some novels you can just read out aloud and they work just as well or better as audio books, but for some there is some need for adapting. This story is heavily on the side of needs some edits in my opinion.

If you have the option to go for another adaption of this story i'd recommend any other instead of this.
Here's how i'd rank the adaptions.
1.Manga
2.Novel
3.Anime
4...
5.This audio book

REALLY good

I’ve basically been waiting on this ever since I heard of the series years ago. I even listened to the robot audiobooks on YouTube- and this is almost everything I ever wanted. The only real issue I have is the narrators voice for the MC- i love the emotion she put into it, but I wish it was more mature sounding, like some of the other voices she uses. She sounds kinda like twilight sparkle and it’s jarring to listen to for 70% of the book. But that’s just personal preference. Regardless, she has great range and has plenty of unique voices for every character. Def worth it, and I can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Surprisingly exceeded my expectations.

This first volume surprised me. While watching the anime, I found the main character, whether in English or Japanese, to be obnoxious. A lot of this was due to the delivery and anime only visual gags that made her irritating. Without the visual gags and the corny dialog that went with them, I found this to be surprisingly refreshing. Also Caitlin's performance here was not only a little more toned down, she also showed off her surprising range which I hadn't expected and found delightful. If her performance here is what I can expect for the season 2 of the anime, I'll enjoy my multiple viewings of the next season (and the next books in the series) far more than I did the first. Okina Baba's writing style is... unique. It leaves much to the imagination and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I've seen one other form of this story, so I had a visual idea in my head as to what was going on during action sequences. So someone coming to this series for the first time and has bought this based on suggestions may find it difficult to get a clear picture of the scenarios depicted within.

Fun LitRPG - Great narrator

If you've watched the anime then you know the story. Probably not much more here than is included in the anime other than more detailed descriptions of things. S
Narrator did a great job of bringing the story to life.

This is great!

This would make a great game, and also you should watch the anime if you like this. Good show. And I think the Main character isn’t bad

huh, did not expect an audiobook of a manga

well...that was surprisingly good! excellent reading from Caitlin Kelly. really brought this book to life. while there are certain things from the anime I don't think you can get across in soley audio alone, the book does an excellent job with its reading. This was a really nice endavor of the publisher to branch out into audio book form. I'm looking forward to the next installment of this book to go along with the anime. 😍😎

narration way too squeaky over long term

she squeaks every voice line of the MC in such an over the top screeching squeeching nails on chalkboard unbearable way ... It's fine for voice lines in a game or every so often, but NOT as the main narration in an audio book.

the book is great.

but I have to lower the audio to a level I barely perceive so my eardrums aren't flayed nonstop. and when she switches voice, I have to massively turn it up.

it's just TOO SHRILL. some lines are incomprehensible squeaking that one can only understand from context.

better than the anime and I loved the anime

honestly I got this because I watched the anime. and I had read there may not be a season 2 and I really wanted to see where the series was going. after seeing on YouTube the people said you should start in the beginning because there's a lot left out of the anime. I'm very happy I did go back and get the first book.

Another great adaptation

Without realising until recently this is my sixth Yen Audio audiobook this year. All their adaptations are excellent and this is no exception. I know the main story from the anime version but this is the best way to experience the story.

fantastic series, translation and narration *****

loved the anime, so glad the light novels are translated and performed fantastically in English. the books shed much more light on the mysteries of this series, looking forwards to the 3rd volume next week, and hopefully many more to come!

She does her best but...

...this book is so painfully slow. you're three hours in and practically nothing has happened. we start out in a cave, then we stay in the cave, then we spend some more time in the cave.

on top of that the MC is completely insufferable. I forced myself to finish this to give it a fair chance but I can't.

So, It's Really Good, So What

The story is really we done, fun, and captivating. But what makes a story even better when buying it on Audible? The Narration. And I must say that this is one of the best narrated audiobooks I've ever listened too, and I'll definitely be buying more from Yen Audio.
