Publisher's Summary

"Giving up" alcohol might sound daunting...but what are you actually giving up when you're hungover on the sofa all day? Cutting out the booze can transform your life in unexpected ways.

We live in a culture that celebrates alcohol use as if it were somehow different from the drugs we place legal restrictions on.

We mark every occasion with alcohol, whether it's a good day, bad day, new job, old job, divorce, wedding, funeral, birthday, holiday and the list goes on and on…you can always guarantee that someone, somewhere, is getting drunk…and it's "normal" to get drunk right?

Alcohol is the one drug that if we have too much of it we are shamed for our behaviour, but if we decide not to drink, we are classed as boring. We live on a drunk planet.

Our love of alcohol is holding us back. Think about the last time you had a drink–even if you weren't conscious of a hangover, you probably felt some effects.

Perhaps your head was a bit cloudy, or you took longer to get going in the morning.

Perhaps you were tired and reaching for the snacks to keep you going at the end of the day.

Maybe you had hopes and dreams before alcohol became a regular occurrence.

Alcohol is expensive, and it has side effects that go far beyond just having a headache the next day.

Imagine the difference in your life if you were to take those side effects away and save the money to fund what you really want to do with your life–and there's a strong chance it involves something a whole lot more fulfilling than a glass of wine or bottle of beer.

Sober on a Drunk Planet: Giving Up Alcohol recognizes how difficult it is to break free of drinking culture and provides you with all the motivation you need to kickstart a new life.

I appreciated the point of view: REALITY

We have been conditioned to drink. This makes you think about why you would ever consume poison in the first place.
The narrator was very good! I just sped it up a bit in my settings.

I read this in one day

I needed this for my life and for my family. I have struggled for years and I’m so sick of beating myself up for not being stronger. This is exactly what I needed to hear to give me the resolve I need. I am looking forward to getting to know Sober Me. Thank you Sean!

Inspiring

I thought it was inspiring, but I think it needed to talk more about how to navigate a drunk planet throughout and not waiting to the end of the book. He also never mentions the word alcoholic, like it’s a word we shouldn’t say. Other than that I loved his performance and authenticity. I would recommend

For a specific audience

I applaud the author for the journey he’s been on and what he’s overcome. Unfortunately the book didn’t resonate with me because it’s specific to the author’s own set of circumstances - 20s-30s working/socialising/boozing/kid free. I’m a 40 year old mum of 2 reflecting on my drinking habits and I’ve read lots on health, mental well-being, soul searching and parenting help. I didn’t find any chapter really uncovered anything for me. People are complex and layered, and how alcohol is used and plays out is muddled, not black and white. This is really a memoir by the author, which is interesting in itself, and certainly helpful if you are in a similar situation.

If you are recovering from addiction - listen!

Really good listen. I am a recovering 30yo alcohol and cocaine with a similar life story to the author. Very good listen as I am 4 months clean now and the difficulties of being sober are there every day in our drunk world. Gave me some really good things to think about and if you are new here… attend CA if you are younger even if cocaine is not your drug of choice. You will have more people to relate to and with.. it is a younger demographic. Thank you and good luck to everyone on your journeys

Good read

Having not exactly given up alcohol but put my foot firmly on the brake, I found it interesting to hear someone else’s experience. I’ve only been completely sober for two weeks but need to give up completely for health reasons so this has given me something to think about.

Sean's experience with alcohol addiction was explained in a way that made me reflect on how alcohol affects so many different people in the same way.
