Publisher's Summary

A beautiful story of love and second chances, with a remarkable family at its heart, from the Sunday Times best-selling author.

So much can change in half a lifetime....

Then

At 15, George is the foster brother Leah never asked for. As the angry, troubled boy struggles to come to terms with his circumstances, Leah finds herself getting drawn closer to him.

Theo’s wealthy family have mysteriously pulled him out of boarding school, and he’s now enrolled at the local state school with Leah and George. When their worlds collide that summer, the three teenagers form a bond they believe will be unbreakable. But life doesn’t always go to plan....

Now

Shocking news brings Leah back to Yorkshire, baby daughter in tow. But Emilie’s father, Theo, isn’t with them, and George has unexpectedly returned. After half a lifetime, have they healed the scars of their pasts? Will coming back home set their hearts in a different direction?

Enjoyed BUT...

Loved the story but found following the story line a bit confusing. Then and now ways of telling a story can be irritating, I found myself having to rewind to get my head around things.

Simply stunning

I adored this book! It's beautifully written, it talks about important issues with sensitivity, the characters feel real and you get swept away in their lives. The narrator was incredible too, such a captivating performance. It's been a long time since I've had a book I just want to binge listen to, I'm really sad it's over!

Same old Paige Toon

I like Paige Toon but am finding more and more that all her books take the same format and are becoming predictable.
Yes this was a nice easy listen but nothing special.

Teenage romance

Read more like a YA novel, bland and sugary, also the narrator grated on me

Lovely Gentle Story

You kind of know where this story is going, but the parts about fostering are really interesting, insightful and heartwarming. Lifts it above the usual love story. Very enjoyable and beautiful read.

A beautiful, poignant and delightful listen

This book deserves every positive review it receives.
Beautifully drawn characters who one is simultaneously impressed by and filled with compassion and a desire to see them thrive and enjoy happiness.

This is a listen filled with pathos, poignancy and deep emotions all deftly drawn by Paige Toon in a book touching on tough life challenges but without the doom and gloom that can be present in so many books considered to be worthy of being in the ‘literary canon.’

Personal life challenges are so intense I require, happy endings. As a callow literature student, ironically considering myself open-minded, I was ‘programmed’ to deride the levity (save for Jane Austen) of an uplifting, gladdening ending which were generally regarded as signalling a lack of literary heft.

However the personal need for fiction providing happiness for characters one comes to really care for, is now potent and I was wary having been disappointed by the not so happy ending in the last Paige Toon book I listened to(title given by *).

I wasn’t alone, discovering my carer, who’d also listened to it had felt short changed by the ending of an otherwise good book.

In this title there are moments which prompted tears and if, another recent listen, hadn’t prompted donating to a charity for young adults (18 year olds) just out of the care system, this book would have done so.

The magnanimity and love of good foster care, and the wider topic of children requiring care; biological children who’s parents are also foster parents; alongside insights into Alpacas and angora rabbits were all movingly, tenderly and interestingly covered in this emotional and truly lovely listen.

Thank you Paige Toon for one of your finest works.
