Fresh off a breakup and an eviction, I started my day like any other: a book in one hand, a coffee in the other, and faking that can-do attitude inspirational memes are made of. I was ready to take on the world — and I did. Unfortunately, it was the Underworld. One freak accident later, I’m standing face-to-face with the sexy-as-sin and dangerously powerful Prince of the Underworld. He has a few burning questions for me — like how a mere human unlocked the door to the Underworld’s prison and released its prisoners.

I’m the bounty hunter you call when you want the job done. But what people don’t know is that I’m a rare half-fae with the sort of powers the Unseelie will kill for. That’s why I let everyone think I’m human and I always work alone. Until now. Corbin Frost has been assigned to my latest case, and working with the Unseelie Enforcer - especially one who is a hybrid fae demon - isn’t going to be easy. He’s here because there are Fae markings on the dead body.

Welcome to The Slaughtered Lamb Bookstore and Bar. I'm Sam Quinn, the werewolf book nerd in charge. I run my business by one simple rule: Everyone needs a good book and a stiff drink, be they vampire, wicche, demon, or fae. No wolves, though. Ever. I serve the supernatural community of San Francisco. We've been having some problems lately. Okay, I'm the one with the problems. The broken body of a female werewolf washed up on my doorstep. What makes sweat pool at the base of my spine, though, is realizing the scars she bears are identical to the ones I conceal.

I can see the spirits of dead people, for one. And I have a knack for fighting rogue supernaturals. My ex-alpha will never let me back in, but there's another alpha in the city. Something has been killing his wolves, and he wants me to destroy it before it takes another one. He'll triple my going rate—but that's not the thing that makes me agree to help him. In a world of darkness where royal vampires are in charge, I spend my days working as a knight in the city formerly known as London. Instead of a lance and a horse, I rely on my trusty axe, Babe, and ride the occasional dragon. Every day, new threats emerge that require a dash of magic and a dollop of attitude. Naturally, danger comes with the territory. What no one knows is just how dangerous it is for me. If our vampire overlords discover what I am, they’ll execute me on the spot — no questions asked — which is why I avoid them at all costs. Until now.

Publisher's Summary
Sophie Feegle needs a break. Rent is due on her crappy apartment and she's halfway through her last loaf of bread.
Sophie doesn't have big ambitions. She only wants a job that will keep her landlord off her back, enough extra cash for whiskey at the neighborhood bar and a bit of free time to hang out with the naughty old lady next door.
When a chance encounter with a quiet stranger leads to a job offer at the San Francisco City Morgue, Sophie jumps at the opportunity. She never expected to find her calling on the graveyard shift surrounded by dead bodies and the strange characters that make up the morgue's staff. Finding out that your friends and co-workers are shifters, ogres and other non-human creatures is a shock, but Sophie quickly realizes that these are her people, and she has finally found her perfect gig.
And then things get odd. Well...odder.
Unusual murders keep ending up on Sophie’s autopsy table, hinting at strange powers working within the city. Something nefarious is building in San Francisco, and it is up to Sophie and her friends to thwart the evil powers on the rise.

I'll buy the next ten in this series ...
I'm an appreciative reviewer, not an analytical one ... so I'll just say, that if you take your favorite "young adult" book, full of snark and critters and unexpected magic and likeable beings you'd easily keep around as friends, and you translate it emotionally up to full adult level writing, you've got this book. And, even better, it doesn't rely on superfluous adrenaline or sex to keep your interest, the book actually has a good plotline, that is actually a plot -- NOT just "one thing after another" .... it's got good storylines, great characters, a pub you'd adopt as your own, people you wish were in your life, and the two MC's make the whole process likeable, fun, and keep your ears tuned up to the story. If you don't need blood splatter on every page, and you don't need sex scenes on every other page, and you do like mythical critters, mystery, light hearted laughing morticians, and shifters of all varieties, then this is your book too. I'm so ready for the next one. BTW -- this is a complete book, not a cliffhanger, this is adult fantasy of the best kind.

WONDERFUL START!!! Hopefully new series.
Great story!!!! A little different from your usual urban fantasy...but it’s an interesting and welcome difference. Hopefully it’s first in a series with many more to come. The characters are all unique and meld with other nicely. And the narrator helps make the story that much more enjoyable! Looking forward to more of Sophie and her odd ones!

fun take on urban fantasy
Likeable MC with diverse paranormals and friends made this a fun book. The MC is snarky with no filter. There is some adult humor. This book defines the world and characters as an investigation around recent deaths progresses. I think there is much more to the MC which has not been revealed. Looking forward to continuing the series. Narration was good with good pacing, voices and snarky dialog.

Fun cast of characters
I have some quibbles with it overall, but it’s very entertaining. My biggest issue with this book is the main character, Sophie. I like her a lot, though her pervasive snark and penchant for f-bombs might bother others. There’s just next to no backstory for her. Questions from others about her past are quickly brushed away. It’s not clear if the author didn’t want to spend too much time on said backstory, so she just skipped it, or if Sophie has a secret magic/fae history that she’s either purposefully or unknowingly hiding from others (which is a common enough UF trope). It just seems like there should at least be a hint about that either way by the end of the book. Her powers sort of come out of left field, too, as well as her quick grasp of how to use them. Her lack of backstory makes this even harder to accept. Her powers start to become a bit too convenient later on as well, providing her with a borderline unbelievable amount of information. It made things a bit too easy, rather than the ragtag team needing to do more boots-on-the-ground sleuthing to figure stuff out. It all leaves me feeling off-kilter about Sophie even though I like her a lot and am rooting for her. I’m a little off-kilter about the romance as well. Not because of him (their banter/chemistry is great), but because it’s some combination of moving too fast and getting whiplash from trying to figure out if she genuinely likes him or not. Despite all this, I’m going to grab the next one to see if some of these issues get smoothed out. To book 2!

Loved this book, wonderful interesting premise, brilliant sarky lead character who discovers a world that she had no idea existed. Entertaining and enthralling story with a lovely sense of fun with a bit of an edge. All the characters are well rounded and described. The audio book has a superb narration which adds wonderfully to the story. I loved everything about this book and look forward to more in the series. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. This book hooked me from the start, it grabbed my attention an held on tight right to the end, and left me desperate for more. The story flowed beautifully, with an intrigueing mystery and some great plot twists, I fell in love with the characters immediately, they were unique, original and incredibly sweet. This book was recommended in a FB UF group and having a few credits to spare I decided to take a chance on this book. This proved an excellent decision. The writing flowed, the story flowed and although originally I had doubts about the narrator now I can't imagine anyone else narrating. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
