Publisher's Summary

Whether we call it the inner critic, superego, or just plain nag, most of us have a "judge within" who's constantly on our case. A comprehensive guide to understanding how the inner critic works, this book offers practical, positive suggestions for breaking free of it. Using straightforward language and examples from everyday life, Byron Brown shows: Where the inner judge came from. How it operates. Why it trips us up. Why we believe we need it. How to develop awareness of it. How to disengage from it. The "soul qualities" we can develop to weaken its influence. Each chapter begins with an episode of the "Frank and Sue story", dramatically illustrating how the inner critic works; each chapter ends with a simple exercise designed to help the listener move along the path of self-discovery.

So wonderful!!!

I am a Diamond Approach student and this presentation of "the Work" has been life changing. Mr. Brown has done an amazing job of translating the teachings in such a way that I gained understanding that had eluded me for the 7 years I've been a student. Thank you!!

Very insightful.

With each chapter, you learn more about yourself and your inner critic. The examples the author uses are perfectly illustrated to allow you to challenge your own inner critic.

Very helpful to my personal growth

The super ego has been a most difficult area to deal with. Byron Brown does an excellent job with helping me to see the subtle ways it hurts my relationships and inner happiness. I first read the hard copy and now find I’m reading to take the material to a deeper level and enjoyed the Audible version very much.

Stacato, Dull, Boring

No the underlying story of how we are programmed and why we think the way we do was an ongoing mantra and done very well.

Any additional comments?

I will probably listen to it again. There is a lot to absorb here.

Such important information

This book reinforced and deepened work I have been doing. It was clear and concise, and the stories were short but illustrative enough to enhance the messages without being boring., There were some glitches with the chapter numbers, and either my device or the content repeated. Ultimately, it just reinforced the information. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to release all the patterns, beliefs, and behaviors that do not serve.

Whispersync doesn't work on this book.

I bought this audio version of a book I already had purchased to read on Kindle. It was supposed to be readable at the same time as listenable. That doesn't work. The only way to listen is with the Audible app. It won't play in the Kindle app as advertised.

Amazing discovery about myself

This inner judge and how it’s explained in this book just clarifies most of my other reading that weren’t really practical, almost like they were hiding the way; this was great for me, thank you!

Life changing

This book opens my eyes around how ever present my inner critic is. Along with meditations, Internal Family System, and journaling, it gives me access to significant peace to my life.
Can’t recommend it more especially if you already have many tools for self growth and healing from the past. This book is a wonderful addition to your self development journey.

Astounding, brilliant....

Would you consider the audio edition of Soul Without Shame to be better than the print version?

I wouldn't consider the print version because the way the brain interprets sound is different from the way it interprets words. Overthinking, rationalizing, judging--all these things can be softened by allowing yourself to sit back and listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

N/A

What does Fajer Al-Kaisi bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice brings depth, authority.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There a thousand things that moved me about this book. To name one would be impossible.

Any additional comments?

For anyone who has ever listened to Tolle's Power of Know--this IS the flashlight that cuts through the fog.

A vital tool in my journey

I found the first chapters a bit hard going, possibly as an audiobook it’s just a case of interacting with the content in a different way, and not being able to look away from the words and reflect so easily.

However I’ve found the bulk of the book enlightening, helpful and life-changing. I now have the confidence to see things differently and the tools to make real change. A vital tool in my journey.

False self "ego" Connect with true Self

I loved it. Its not easy to accept old hurt or false beliefs and strategies of the Ego. But you get step by step plan to regain true power by knowing when your ego is on controle and how to take the controle back with Will power.

how amazing your life will be once you’ve read this book

I patiently and painfully persisted with this book until it was unbearable about chapter 6 because it was recommended to me. I’ve never heard so little in so many words. Up til chapter six at least, the book is about how amazing your life will be once you’ve read this book. The content amounts to little, the rendition I’m sorry to say is equally awful - though I’m sure I couldn’t present a book like this any better.

Get ready to realise your Judge is NOT your friend

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Any additional comments?

This is a great book for anyone who isn't into psychology mumbo jumbo.. puts things into perspective and practical ways to really get to know yourself, good, bad and ugly.
