Story
Lyr might be a powerful elven lord in charge of thousands, but his personal life is a disaster. Just the month before, a daughter he'd never known existed arrived from Earth, giving him news of his lost love's death. Since then, he has been betrayed, captured, and almost murdered. And though his enemy was defeated, Lyr's wounds never seem to heal. He certainly doesn't need more conflict.

Story
As a wolf shifter growing up in a strong pack, I should be living my best life. But after my father tried to kill our leader, I’m labelled an outcast, traitor, less than dirt. When I can't take pack life any longer, I run, but apparently they don't like losing their punching bag. Torin, the leader’s son, drags me back before my first shift...a shift that will reveal my true mate. I never could have predicted who mine would be, but the moment my wolf looks upon him, I’m filled with hope for a brighter future.

My heart hasn't beat in a 1,000 years. I haven't uttered a word in prison, and the guards keep their distance. If they get too close, they die - until at last, my magic binds my soul to another. Unfortunately, the person destined to save me is a night elf - the enemy of my kind. And yet, when I see her in the cell across from mine, an ember starts to burn in my chest.

After my plane was sabotaged and crashed into the jungle, I rescued five male survivors from the wreckage. I could have let them die, but no, I decided to pull their stupid carcasses from the wreckage. I’m immortal, not a monster. Yes, they’re hot; now is not the time to do something about that. The five sexy jaguar-shifters are on a mission to locate someone, a rare phoenix-shifter. Phoenix, the legendary creature, reborn every time it dies. Wait…could they be looking for me? It doesn’t matter since they walked away and left me to die in the Amazon rainforest.

Fae exist only in children’s stories, or so I thought. That was before a nightmarish creature of the Fae Realm dropped into my life. He claimed a seven-pointed mark on my skin signified my magical lineage, the bit of DNA my mother passed down. Days after I arrive in the Fae Realm, I’m thrown into a series of trials titled ‘The Devotion’. I must compete with demons, vampires, elves and more who want to claim their place at the future King’s side. I have no interest in this guy, but it doesn’t help that the King-to-be is a gorgeous, brooding fae.

In a world of darkness where royal vampires are in charge, I spend my days working as a knight in the city formerly known as London. Instead of a lance and a horse, I rely on my trusty axe, Babe, and ride the occasional dragon. Every day, new threats emerge that require a dash of magic and a dollop of attitude. Naturally, danger comes with the territory. What no one knows is just how dangerous it is for me. If our vampire overlords discover what I am, they’ll execute me on the spot — no questions asked — which is why I avoid them at all costs. Until now.

It was an ordinary job. Another night, another asshole collector of the supernatural. I free some poor little beasties from their cages, pocket a few trinkets to pay my bills, and burn the place down on my way out. Just call me the Robin Hood of monster emancipation. I didn’t count on three manly monsters following me home like lost puppies. Stunningly hot lost puppies, but still. Now I’ve got a seductively cheeky incubus, a sweetly enthusiastic demon, and a grimly stoic angel camped out in my kitchen.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Publisher's Summary
A deathbed promise.
Arlyn's quest is simple: Find her father and let him know her mother is dead. After all, Arlyn had promised her mother she'd go. The problem? Her father's people are myths and legends, and he doesn't even live on Earth. But despite a long journey through the mysterious mists of the Veil, finding him turns out to be the easy part.
A dream long buried.
After 500 years, Kai has given up on finding his soulbonded. So when he stumbles across Arlyn after returning from his latest mission and recognizes her as his mate, Kai starts their bond in haste. But he never could have imagined that his bonded is his best friend's newfound daughter. Whoops.
A hidden conspiracy sparked to life.
Though the sight of Kai makes Arlyn's heart pound, she isn't sure she can forgive him for starting their bond without her permission. But her love life is the least of her problems. Her father is an elf lord, and his sudden acknowledgment of a half-human heir reignites the same conspiracy that took him away from her mother in the first place. Now Arlyn and her family must face iron-wielding assassins, bigotry, and her newly awakened magical abilities if they hope to come through in one piece.
Arlyn thought she would return to Earth after meeting her father. Now she must fight to save the family she never knew she wanted.

70% worldbuilding, 20% court intrigue, 10% romance
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Somewhat. I did enjoy the setup and explanations of the culture, but unfortunately the romance was an afterthought at best. The summary had me expecting a marriage-then-love plot with some court politics, but what I got was a lot of background of the world the characters inhabited with little to no depth given to those characters themselves.
Would you recommend Soulbound to your friends? Why or why not?
No. I feel like friends who enjoy fantasy world-building wouldn't enjoy the shoehorned romance but friends who enjoy romance wouldn't enjoy the drawn out world-building explanations or the very poorly executed romance plot. The author seemed to want to do both, but ended up dividing her efforts too much between them and the story suffered for it.
Which character – as performed by Gabrielle de Cuir and Stefan Rudnicki – was your favorite?
None of the characters were especially relatable or lovable. They all felt shallow and one-note in their characterization. I would say Adams clearly had a favorite, because that character was given the most backstory and explanation of anyone, that being Lyr. While the author clearly meant for Arlyn to be the main character, she feels more like an alternate point of view to a story mainly revolving around her father.
What would have made this romance irresistible?
Actually having spent time on said romance, for one. The summary implies that it is a main plotline but it is actually a background plot that receives little to no development. The characters are just suddenly "in love" with no buildup or effort. While Aryn is initially doubtful about the soulbond, after Kai is injured she is suddenly totally accepting of it. The two only have a handful of conversation in the entire book (most of which is just Kai explaining culture or history to Arlyn) but suddenly they are confessing their love to one another and falling into bed.
Any additional comments?
If you are primarily looking for a romance, this is really not the story for you. If you enjoy believable character depth & development, this is not the book you want. If you simply enjoy fantasy elven culture, you might really enjoy this book, because that is where the main focus is.

I would really prefer a narrator other than Gabrielle de Cuirass
I feel cruel writing this, but I feel compelled to do so. If you are fussy about the narrators of audiobooks, then you want to avoid this one. It was difficult to determine if I enjoyed the book. Every time Ms. de Cuir read, I found myself doing my best to not shut it off. I think it is a lack of her acting ability. Her inflection, intonation, and how she elongated words made it grueling to listen to. Finally, her voice of Arlyn was like that of a child/valley girl/annoyed teen. and not the voice of an adult.
Now, in Ms. De Cuir's defense of portraying Arlyn as an adult, Ms. Adams made her character too young for her age as well as her "soul mate." It was also difficult to believe a five hundred year old man would act like a teenager.

Good enough book. Poor narration.
The female narrator did a good job with description and male voices but she made the female voice unbearable. I've stopped listening many times simply because I couldn't take the whining! She's supposed to be a grown woman, but she sounds pubescent. Book comes down 2 stars for me for that alone.

Ok
the narration didn’t work for me not their voice but how they lack passion behind their words. The story it self was pretty if a little confusing. I wanted more passion from the characters as well. World building was good and so was much of the background story. Just lacked passion.

Lead is a dud
The story is captivating, nicely described scenes, and the elven characters are fascinating. The MC, however, is a bratty, whiny twerp. She approaches everything with a big chip on her shoulders while her father and soul bounded are nothing but polite and accommodating to her. I enjoyed the story but cringe a little every time she’s in a scene.

Terrible
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This storyline had so much potential I was saddened to see it slaughtered so! No romance what so ever, just three conversations and bed. Terrible characters. A 500-year-old elven guy that is as mature as a 15-year-old. The female narrator turns the protagonist into a whiny kid. No real descriptive prose, anything complicated was avoided. The protagonist spent weeks in the portal, yet we are told nothing about it.
Would you ever listen to anything by Bethany Adams again?
Never ever! Nope! Shoot myself first.
Did Gabrielle de Cuir and Stefan Rudnicki do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
Did not like this joint venture, but i would consider listening to Gabrielle de Cuir again.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
disappointment, I came for elves and got inmature 500 year old idiots.
Any additional comments?
Thank god i can give the book back.

Long story
The characters were well developed but there was little to no romance you had to wait for the book to nearly be over before the chastely kiss and they could have been monks for all the romance. Great book if you like the politics and long drawn out storyline. I tried but after listening for hours and hours and hours when they finally completed the bond the bedroom sense was leaking disappointing for all the hours and hours of build up I stopped listening with 2 hrs to go . I’ve made a note of the author so I don’t get any more

Although the story itself was decent enough (excluding the tedium of the naming and introductions. The performance of the female narrator was truthful painful. Arlan's dialogue was not too bad but the narrator made her constantly sound like a petulant teenager. It was unpleasant yo listen too.

Enjoyed this more than expected
As much as I love fantasy, I do worry that many "elvish" stories might be a bit cliché... but this was not that.
I enjoyed the male/female narrative from the different viewpoints, and both narrators had lovely voices - though I can understand if this wasn't everyone's cup of tea.
The story could almost stand on its own. I don't *need* to read book 2 - though I will, as I enjoyed the story and the characters.

Enjoyable
Was a nice listen, especially because the story is not heavy handed on the romance like a lot of other fantasy books

Good story but narrators ruined it
I genuinely liked the story, there were afew predictable things but the main plot was still pretty good, with some funny and wholesome moments. I think I'll listen to the next book too.
I just didn't like either of the narrators, especially the guy, his voice could be hard to understand and hard to distinguish different characters. The woman's voice was better but still annoying, she over exaggerated the main characters voice, making a fully grown woman sound like a whiny teenager.

Can't get past the narrators
I really tried to listen to this as the story seemed interesting but the narrators were both so terrible. What a shame.... couldn't get past 45 minutes

book
I really enjoyed this story, though I found the contrast of the two different narrators didn't really mesh well. I would of preferred one or the other.
