Our human psyches possess astonishing resources that wait within us, but we might not even know they exist until we discover how to access them and cultivate their powers, their untapped potentials and depths. Wild Mind identifies these resources - which Bill Plotkin calls the four facets of the self, or the four dimensions of our innate human wholeness - and also the four sets of fragmented or wounded subpersonalities that form during childhood.

As the climate veers toward catastrophe, the innumerable losses cascading through the biosphere make vividly evident the need for a metamorphosis in our relation to the living land. For too long we've inured ourselves to the wild intelligence of our muscled flesh, taking our primary truths from technologies that hold the living world at a distance. This audiobook subverts that distance, drawing listeners ever deeper into their animal senses in order to explore, from within, the elemental kinship between the body and the breathing Earth.

Story
Myth is our wild way of telling the truth, of sharing stories that have our living earth speaking through them. There is an old insistence that we each have a twin we know nothing about. A wild, curious twin that was thrown out the window the night we were born, taking much of our energy with them. This story is a quest to find and court our wild twin, for they have something important to tell us. If there was something we were here to do in our few, brief years, we can be sure that the wild twin is holding the key.

For a thousand generations, human beings viewed themselves as part of the wider community of nature, and they carried on active relationships not only with other people but with other animals, plants, and natural objects (including mountains, rivers, winds, and weather patterns) that we have only lately come to think of as "inanimate". How, then, did humans come to sever their ancient reciprocity with the natural world?

Inspiring hope, solace, and courage in living through our losses, author Martín Prechtel, trained in the Tzutujil Maya shamanic tradition, shares profound insights on the relationship between grief and praise in our culture - how the inability that many of us have to grieve and weep properly for the dead is deeply linked with the inability to give praise for living. In modern society, grief is something that we usually experience in private, alone, and without the support of a community.

Feel like you don’t belong? You’re not alone. The world has never been more connected, yet people are lonelier than ever. Whether we feel unworthy, alienated, or anxious about our place in the world, the absence of belonging is the great silent wound of our times. Most people think of belonging as a mythical place, and they spend a lifetime searching for it in vain. But what if belonging isn’t a place at all? What if it’s a skill that has been lost or forgotten? With her signature depth and eloquence, Toko-pa maps a path to belonging from the inside out.

Enchantment. By Dr. Sharon Blackie’s definition, a vivid sense of belongingness to a rich and many-layered world, a profound and whole-hearted participation in the adventure of life. Enchantment is a natural, spontaneous human tendency - one we possess as children, but lose, through social and cultural pressures, as we grow older. It is an attitude of mind which can be cultivated: the enchanted life is possible for anyone. It is intuitive, embraces wonder, and fully engages the mythic imagination - but it is also deeply embodied in ecology, grounded in place and community.

Publisher's Summary
Since 1980, depth psychologist Bill Plotkin has been guiding women and men into the wilderness - the redrock canyons and snow-crested mountains of the American West - but also into the wilds of the soul. He calls this work soulcraft.
There's a great longing in all people to uncover the secrets and mysteries of our individual lives, to find the unique gift we were born to bring to our communities, and to experience our full membership in the more-than-human world. This journey to soul is a descent into layers of the self, much deeper than personality, a journey meant for each one of us, not just for the heroes and heroines of mythology.
A modern handbook for the journey, Soulcraft is not an imitation of indigenous ways, but a contemporary nature-based approach born from wilderness experience, the traditions of Western culture, and the cross-cultural heritage of all humanity. Filled with stories, poems, and guidelines, Soulcraft introduces over 40 practices that facilitate the descent to soul, including dreamwork, wilderness vision fasts, talking across the species boundaries, council, self-designed ceremony, nature-based shadow work, and the arts of romance, being lost, and storytelling.

Life changing... if you’re ready for it
I started this audible back in August and now just finished it in March. Over these past 6 months, my life has changed dramatically.
I took pause at each moment I felt ‘at capacity’ with the material, to allow the words to resonate deeply, which in turn has manifested as me taking huge leaps toward living out my soul purpose.
While I’m not completely thru the awakening into my second adulthood, I am continuously held by the stories and affirmations that, it is for the betterment of myself, and the world, to maintain pace on my journey to soul—no matter how scary and uncertain each step may be.
Deep gratitude and respect to Bill Plotkin for authoring this book and following his soul path to bring others to theirs, and to Rob Grgach for his brilliant and soulful narration.
One final note: while I prefer audible, I also purchased the book as an easy reference guide. There are poems, excerpts and powerful questions that I find myself referring back to more often than my ability to effectively bookmark as I’m listening.
If there were such thing as a Soulcraft study group, I’d be in!
Other related books I love: The Four Agreements & The Celestine Prophecy — they weave together in a beautiful way that I believe has the power to change the world.
May you, too, find your SoulCraft!

interesting ideas but nearly unlistenable
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
yes, but i had to eventually quit listening and actually read the book.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Rob Grgach has one of the worst voice over accents i've listened to. i began to laugh at this work whenever i would hear him say "mount-in" or "fount-in" (mountain , fountain). it was so distracting, i had to stop.

Rich in deep psychology this book will be a go to guide for any one wanting more understanding to the nature of the soul and how to facilitate ways of being/becoming more connected with that element of which is mystified and subtle. A bedside go to for the naturalist, the seeker and any one from all walks of life. Wonderful Insight into Wilderness Solos
I very much enjoyed this book. The subject matter centers around the experience of going into a wildnerness solo - just you and nature - no food - for a few days and the incredible changes that it can bring to your spiritual and personal life. I read it as I was about to do my own wilderness solo/vision quest and I found it informative but also a rich spiritual story around man's relationships with nature and his deeper, more wild self. Fantastic information for people looking to do a vision quest but just as wonderful to listen to if you want to get back out into nature and refind your peace and purpose.
The only downside was the narration - I found the strange accent of the narrator very offputting - he doesn't pronounce any of his 't's' which is very difficult to listen to - he voice is also somewhat monotonous in places, but it didn't put me off the book or the subject matter.
