What a grat story!
I am finding I really like H. L. Burke's style. This book did not disappoint! Her worlds are familiar, yet seem to have a twist that make you know they are different from our own. Her characters are often quirky, sometimes exasperating, and always engaging. This story line kept me reading lost past when I should have stopped. If you like well grounded fantasy that has a touch of the familiar, this is for you. Geared toward young adults and adults, there is some mild romance in this story, but no teen angst. Overall a very enjoyable tale, I am happy I have volume two already!

A good young adult fantasy book
This is a young adult book but I enjoyed it all the same. The prodigal son, Auric, comes home from school find his father, the Mater, has taken a student, Jericho. Jericho is threatened by the return of Auric. He didn't wan to lose his place with Auric's father. Jericho in infatuated with Auric's sister. Of course they had to band together to get the Master back. They venture into the Fey world and encounter many obstacles. The characters were well developed. The plot was well planned out. If you like spells and magic then this is the book for you. It was very enjoyable.
The narration was very good. The narrator brought the characters to life.

Fantasy for younger readers
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
I must admit I expected more from this book. On the positive side, the idea behind the plot was interesting and the author's magic system was both innovative and it helped to create interesting plot situations. However, I found the twists in the story predictable and the character development both predictable and somewhat superficial. The greatest flaw, however, was that it felt like a series of short stories tacked together, as the heroes jumped from one situation to another.
This book would work best if target at younger readers, who might not yet be familiar with the tropes and conventions of fantasy. The lack of violence and sex also point at a younger audience.
I loved the narrator. His calm and soothing voice kept the story going and added to the fantastic and magical mood.

For Young Adult's
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would say yes to someone much younger than I.
Would you be willing to try another book from H. L. Burke? Why or why not?
Always open to try. This may not have been to my liking, but can say the same for some of my favorite authors.
What three words best describe Bridger Conklin’s voice?
I enjoyed his narration. And believe he'll do great in future readings.
Was Spellsmith & Carver: Magicians' Rivalry worth the listening time?
Not for me, but having said I would, I finished listening to end. One of the things Audible or who ever decides could do to improve choosing for me would be to have a notation in description that a book was for young adults.
Any additional comments?
As I said, this was not to my liking. I found it silly and juvenile at times, but then I'm old. Someone under 20 might find it great.
This book was given to me for free at my request and that I provide this honest voluntary review, I do so without reading other reviews in order to form my own opinion.

a magical bromance is born
When Auric Spellsmith reruns home, the last thing he expected to find was that he had been replaced.
When Jericho Carver learns that the true son is home, he is afraid his usefulness is over.
what starts as a battle of Will's over who will inherit a simple magic shop, quickly escalates to a dangerous rescue mission into the heart of Faerie land.
I love H. L. Burke stories, they are full of wonder and snark. Spellsmith and Carver is no exception. The biting remarks that these two frenemies sling at each other are masterpieces of wordplay.
And its all perfectly narrated by Bridger Conklin. He does voice variation to some degree, but his true talent is with the timing. H.L. Burke characters require a narrator who can keep up a quick back and forth in dialogue. Conklin does just that, even though he's only talking to himself.

I liked this book more then I expected. There was something about it that had me listening to it. I thought the pace was good and it was intriguing. The narrator did a great job at voicing the characters.

Rivals having to put rivalry aside
I would give this 4.5 stars if I could. Definitely an interesting story of a son whose relationship with his father had been strain coming home from school to discover another working with his father and also have a thing for his sister. Many arguments come up and he feels he made the wrong choice to come home until his father turns up missing and having to work with his rival. Main thing I would change is to make his sister a tad bit stronger there are times she comes out like a door mat and not because she feels she has to keep the peace between her brother and father other than that it was a very lovely book.

Enjoyable
I would give this book 3.5 stars. However that was not possible, 3 stars is too harsh and 4 is too generous.
This was a lovely little read. The writing was great, the characters were explained in great detail and developed as the story went on. The plot was ok, not intensely gripping though. I love this genre and compared to other books, I felt this was lacking something. Maybe there wasn't enough magic involved, I'm not sure. I did enjoy it. The narrator had a velvet voice, so when I listened at night, it sent me straight to sleep!!! I do have the other 2 books, so let's hope the plot becomes more gripping!!

Refreshingly intricate story! A great read/listen!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book it starts out feeling like a very normal magic story and quickly morphs into a more complex thriller adventure story with magical elements.
I loved the interplay of the characters and how the relationships cement and develop between people. There is some very logical sensible progression of the characters but it is more of an awakening than development.
The story doesn't play out quite how you expect and there are enough twists and turns to keep you reading.
The performance is good with nice differentiation of characters throughout.
If you enjoy a magic based fantasy with more of a thriller adventure twist this is definitely a book for you.
