Publisher's Summary

The new breakneck stand-alone thriller from best-selling author of the Spider Shepherd series.

What makes a good man become an assassin?

A Navy SEAL has gone rogue, selling his skills to the highest bidder as a professional assassin. Ryan French no longer cares who he kills so long as the price is right. His former bosses want him taken down, but they're not prepared to get their hands dirty, so they need a Brit to do the job.

SAS trooper Matt 'Lastman' Standing is a lethal killing machine with experience in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Plus he's worked with French in the past. It's not a mission he wants, but Standing made a bad choice in his past, and it has come back to haunt him. Now he's hunting French in the lawless Wild West forests of Humboldt County, where the US produces most of its legal - and illegal - cannabis.

But French isn't the only predator in the wilderness - there are Mexican cartels, Russian Mafia and Hungarian gangsters - and Standing has to overcome them all to get to his target.

Disappointed

I liked the story and the narrator. The disappointment was the last 3 chapters wouldn’t down load so I don’t know how the story ends

Throughly enjoyable.

Couldnt stop listening. A lot of action. Great story. I did have a problem with the narration. Thornly has an irritating habit of pausing for 2,54 seconds between sentences all the time all the way through. It disturbs the rhythm.

First “Spider “ & now “ Standing” !! Wow this had me gripped

This was a brilliant surprise for me, as the power of YouTube and podcasts has kept me listening to others for years , I dipped my toe into audible and trying my reading / listening via these means and platforms , I was pleasantly surprised at being introduced to “Matt Standing” such is the length of time since I picked up my last Stephen Leather book!!
Excellent listen , brilliant narrator ( his accents are fantastic) and this made me use all remaining credits to buy his other recent titles.
Keep up the great work stephen , I loved every second of this amazing new literature/listening experience

as always, a wonderful character...

...A wonderful story, a subject that you lessen a lot about and a load of bad guys thrown in. classic Stephen Leather, although I'd like to see a bit more of Jack Nightingale if possible...

Excellent

Great story and Paul Thornley's narration is excellent as ever. It's typical Leather, Standing is a great successor to Spider and Leather seems to have managed to keep the questionable politics creeping into his writing out of this book.

Outstanding!

Matt Standing, simply outstanding! Following in the footsteps of spider Shepherd, this is a fantastic instalment in the new Matt Standing series.
Can’t wait for the next in this series. As well as the next in the Spider Shepard series.
Once again, Stephen Leather delivers another fantastic fast paced action packed adventure leaving no stone unturned.
I am I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Especially more so with Paul Thornleys fantastic narration.
I was so captivated after The pre-order dropped into my library last night, but I downloaded it immediately and have stayed up the entire night reading it from start to finish!
Quite simply outstanding!

Not so outstanding

I normally love Stephen leather books but was a bit disappointed with this one as it seems to have about 6 hours of filler information to pad the story out to find it’s normal length. Ok - I can now run a cannabis farm but not want I really wanted to learn the finer points about! This book could have been a couple of hours at most - I enjoyed that two hours but the padding not so. Paul thornley as narrator as excellent as always.
