Publisher's Summary
When the Imperial prison barge Purge - temporary home to 500 of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels, and thieves - breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict, and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back - bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine.
And death is only the beginning.
The Purge’s half-dozen survivors - two teenage brothers, a sadistic captain of the guards, a couple of rogue smugglers, and the chief medical officer, the lone woman on board - will do whatever it takes to stay alive. But nothing can prepare them for what lies waiting aboard the Star Destroyer amid its vast creaking emptiness that isn’t really empty at all. For the dead are rising: Soulless, unstoppable, and unspeakably hungry.

Freaking scary!
Man this book will ENTRANCE you with the horror. At several points I had to stop because it was freaking me out. The chapter transitions which are screamed in a freaky way will really add to freaking you out. And yes thus far I've used the word freak a lot, because this book did a very good job of scaring the bejesus out of me. I had to stop listening to it after hours at work, cuz I was all alone. The narration is AWESOME. They have full dramatization and a full cast as far as I can tell. WARNING: This audio book WILL scare most people. I am no shyster to horror, with all classic horror movies being enjoyable to me. But jeez, the way this book is paced you constantly feel the constraints of the spaceships. There is nowhere safe to run. Nowhere to safe to hide. If horror is your bag, GET THIS AUDIO BOOK! If you are easily frightened stay away!

Awesome atmospheric Star Wars horror
The Star Wars universe has always been about adventure and might, but being a full grown adult and a fan, I am always in search for good stories in the Expanded Universe.
I had always thought my beloved franchise needed some good mature stories and here it is. Death Troopers is a mature, fast paced story that will make you enjoy this book in one sitting.
The story is heavy on character development and you end up actually caring for what happens to all of them.
Narrative is pretty atmospheric and you feel like you are there, trying to get out of a swarm of monsters that are up for a good lunch.
Now about the narrator. This guy is AWESOME. I am pretty impressed by his quality, his acting skills and how he can switch from a teenage voice to a droid to a girl to a villain. All in a single chapter. If you happen to know him, please tell him I am a huge fan.
The production is also top notch. I has plenty of sounds and atmospheres and clips from the movies.
The book is a blast. Just plain fun and it will give you the creeps rather often.
Fantastic work.

Has its moments. Not many, but it does have them.
I've never heard any other narrations by Sean Kenin, but he is stellar here. He uses an array of different voices, accents, and speech patterns so you always know which character is speaking. His natural reading voice is clear and pleasant. I will have to look for more of his work. Strong audio design continues beyond the narration, with licensed Star Wars music and sound effects used throughout for great ambiance.
Unfortunately, the story itself is uneven. While truly good at some points, it is often goofy and always predictable. In addition to being predictable, the author errs, in my opinion, by not providing enough survivors. The initial outbreak claims all but six characters, and two of them are protected by Hero Death Immunity - two canonical characters in a very questionable cameo. No matter how grim things seem for our survivors, there is very little dramatic tension since we know that, at worst, only four of them can possibly suffer any permanent consequences. A larger cast with no "untouchables" would have helped the story considerably.
I would recommend this book to a friend, but only on the condition they were a huge fan of both Star Wars AND zombies.

Ugh Not Another.....
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this story to the die hard Star Wars fan. There is another particular fan that I would recommend this to as well.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I loved the sound affects.
I am so very tired and bored with the plot as it has been done a billion times.
What about Sean Kenin’s performance did you like?
Just a great voice with a good sense of timing.
Did Star Wars inspire you to do anything?
I am not certain that I understand this question. I purchased the book because it was a Star Wars universe setting.
Any additional comments?
This really was not a bad book. I think young adult readers would love it. I did enjoy the radio play elements, and the reader.

Comes across as fan fiction
This was my first foray in to the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU) and honestly it gives off a "fan fiction" kind of feel. I really can't say that the author is bad, but just wasn't my taste. I do how ever like the added sound effects and the reader did a great job with all the different voices. I will give maybe one more EU book a chance. Fingers crossed.

Star Wars with zombies
Atmospheric, dark and descriptive this is one of the best things to happen to the Star Wars expanded universe.
The writing of Joe Schreiber with narration from Sean Kenin combined with some immersive sound effects will have you visualising every gruesome moment in this tale.
It's proven so popular that a sequel is already being written.

Zombies In Space
This is a superb addition to the Star Wars universe, blending horror with sci-fi. It tells the tale of an Imperial Prison Barge that stumbles upon a seemingly deserted Star Destroyer. All is not as it seems, and the boarding party gets infected with a virus that kills them, and then brings them back as the Undead.
Joe Schreiber does a fine job of incorporating zombie lore into his narrative. The narration is superb, and there are just enough sound effects (e.g. blaster shots, the whooshing of doors, the enraged cries of the undead etc.) to add to the atmosphere without becoming distracting (as I originally thought it would when I first started listening to this audiobook). Schreiber creates some marvellous action set pieces, and is not afraid to kill off some of the main characters, creating a genuine sense of tension - the only two characters you can be certain won't become zombie food are the two guest stars from the Star Wars movies - I don't want to spoil the surprise, so I won't name them here.
I happily rate this audiobook as 5 stars, and would recommend it to anyone. Listen and enjoy!

Fanboy's dream?
Star Wars and Zombies--the fanboy's ultimate delight--one of those left-field suggestions that when you hear it you instantly say YES! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE THINK OF THIS EARLIER?
While Schreiber may have written the book, he openly acknowledges that staff at Del Rey books (as well as one of their brother-in-law's) planted the seed and wrote the first outline, and that Schreiber himself was left to put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard.)
Thusly, Death Troopers starts out with a solid IDEA: a Zombie outbreak in the Star Wars universe. The first half of the story begins well enough, with the intrigue of a ghost ship yarn (albeit, the ghost ship in question is an imperial star destroyer), before moving through to the chaos of outbreak and infection at breakneck speed. This, unfortunately, is where Schreiber has apparently run out of steam, for the second half of the novel is mainly spent running from the living dead, just trying to find a way to escape, padding out the material as best possible.
It lacks something that's kind of hard to pinpoint, but it seems that you've just heard it all before--I myself found it very similar to the Alien movies--particularly the poor fourth entry. Once the setup is complete our heroes and villains are mainly left wandering dark cramped corridors, running from death snapping (quite literally at points) at their heels. There's no real pay-off, and the predictable stock/cliched subplots, including bio-weapon engineering and vengeance for the death of a father, are really quite uninteresting.
Its real selling point is its premise, which does fall short--however there are some positives: The first half is taut and vivid, and the welcome additions of some well-loved classic characters are well observed and true to character.
More PLOT would have been welcome, as opposed to SETUP, which Schreiber seems to have confused for storytelling. I was quite let down by this--even as an avid SW and ZOMFIC fanboy. Shame, really

Good but not great.
Overall I enjoyed the book. The idea behind the story was good but alittle overcomplicated, why carnt a Zombie just be a Zombie.
SPOILERS
My biggest issue was introducing Han Solo and Chewie. It was lazy and pure fan service. His dialog was also over the top, like he was trying to hard to be Han Solo. Combined with the narrator's rather emotionless performance as Han, meant some of the dialog was almost funny at the wrong times.
Overall, take Han and Chewie out and it would of been a higher rating from me.

Dark Star Wars
This was amazing!
I've only seen the SW movies but hearing this dark, horrible side of the SW universe was quite honestly refreshing!
The story was gripping from start to end and the performance was excellent!

Might be for you, just not for me
Let me start off by saying that the performance was good, the voice acting was good and the reading was easy to listen to.
However, my issues start with the sound effects of the quote-unquote "zombies". No zombie has ever made a high-pitch squeal sound; it just took me completely out of the immersion, it was a poor choice - a low, snarling growl would've been so much better and made the audiobook so much more terrifying.
My other issue is with the story itself. There were some tremendous parts, don't get me wrong, but there were too many things that happened by coincidence that I didn't like at all.
I had a lot of hope for this novel when I first heard about it many years ago, and it's a shame it took until now for me to get around to it. Maybe my expectations were too high, maybe not. I'm sure a few years ago, I would've found it far more enjoyable but by now it was nothing special.
If you enjoyed this book, more power to you. But this one just wasn't for me.

Zombies?
Your typical zombie story, but in the Star Wars universe. So I liked it. A lot of cliché's and very predictable at some parts, it still is a decent read. The voice acting needed more "in context" emotion, though. No matter what was happening, every character seemed to have a non-committal, conversational tone, like the dialogue was all entirely monologuing

Awesome listen.
The story overall in itself was alright, but the sound effects and the way it was read really sold it.
Some really good parts in there too.

Not your average starwars.
If you are a fan of star wars or just a horror fan, this is a great story; rich with gruesome reveals and gory details, all tied together with fantastically chilling audio effects.
This fan book is definitely not like the average starwars novel, it is incredibly dark and at times almost like deadspace, grotesque and creepy as anything.
Super fun story and well worth a listen.

Very well read, excellent and exciting story.
Really loved it. The pace, the story, the narrator, the effects, music etc. It really should be made into a movie already.
