Story
When the Imperial prison barge Purge - temporary home to 500 of the galaxy’s most ruthless killers, rebels, scoundrels, and thieves - breaks down in a distant, uninhabited part of space, its only hope appears to lie with a Star Destroyer found drifting, derelict, and seemingly abandoned. But when a boarding party from the Purge is sent to scavenge for parts, only half of them come back - bringing with them a horrific disease so lethal that within hours nearly all aboard the Purge die in ways too hideous to imagine. And death is only the beginning.

Story
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Publisher's Summary
The era of the Old Republic is a dark and dangerous time, as Jedi Knights valiantly battle the Sith Lords and their ruthless armies. But the Sith have disturbing plans - and none more so than the fulfillment of Darth Scabrous’s fanatical dream, which is about to become nightmarish reality.
Unlike those other Jedi sidelined to the Agricultural Corps - young Jedi whose abilities have not proved up to snuff - Hestizo Trace possesses one extraordinary Force talent: a gift with plants. Suddenly her quiet existence among greenhouse and garden specimens is violently destroyed by the arrival of an emissary from Darth Scabrous. For the rare black orchid that she has nurtured and bonded with is the final ingredient in an ancient Sith formula that promises to grant Darth Scabrous his greatest desire.
But at the heart of the formula is a never-before-seen virus that’s worse than fatal - it doesn’t just kill, it transforms. Now the rotting, ravenous dead are rising, driven by a bloodthirsty hunger for all things living - and commanded by a Sith Master with an insatiable lust for power and the ultimate prize: immortality... no matter the cost.

zombie apocalypse yes, tale of the dark side, no.
I picked up this book expecting another tale of the irresistible and insatiable power of the Dark Side and the disturbing corruption that inevitably comes with it, and another glimpse into ancient Sith history. I expected to be terrified by the exploits of a Dark Lord with an army of animated corpses doing his bidding. Like the other tales of the Sith I have read (the Bane trilogy, Darth Plagueis, etc) I expected to see an ancient Sith lord cut a swath of destruction that shaped Star Wars history. I got no such thing. If you like zombie bloodbaths you'll probably like this one ( I am sitting alone in my room with lights still on . . .) but if you are more interested in character development and events that formed the Star Wars galaxy as we know it, then look elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, the book was riveting and I really couldn't put it down, and the idea of a Force-adept who speaks to plants is intrigueing, but it just wasn't quite the battle-of-good-vs-evil-decided-by-individual-choices-and-actions that I expected. I don't think I'll listen to it again.
The narrator does an excellent job performing the voices and conveying the emotions of the characters, sound effects and music score are excellent. I'll be looking for other titles narrated by this actor.

Okey not great
The story is okey, but a mess, part Liam Nelson's Taken, part DC's Poison Ivy, and part hivemind zombie plague... Zero reason connect to anything else
Now the narration i very good and som good sound effects are added, but the audio mixing is amaturish with it changing volumen from line to line, and several lines seem to have been cut together from several differently readings

I thought the title started with Star Wars?????
What disappointed you about Star Wars: Red Harvest?
Hey Joe, just because someone grabs a lightsaber, doesn't make it a Star Wars story. If you wanted to write a zombie novel, write a zombie novel. What a waste of a good credit. Thank goodness I didn't actually waste a couple dozen bucks on this fraud.
Has Star Wars: Red Harvest turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not so much the genre, but I'll never waste another good credit on one of Joe Schreiber's books. Sorry dude, this was painful.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I've always loved John Glover's acting and think its so awful that some jerk conned him into narrating this story. His narrating didn't detract at all from the book, the writing detracted from this book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Amazement that anyone at Lucas' company would have ever agreed to allow this to be published, I want to know who got paid off...
Any additional comments?
Star Wars fans, there are so many wonderful writers out there who have penned wonderful stories but believe me when I tell you...this IS NOT one of those.

Didn't even make half way through
What disappointed you about Star Wars: Red Harvest?
It was just boring and gross. I've read every Star Wars book in the last 20 years. Always loved them, but this was the worst. This is just horrible.
What could Joe Schreiber have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
His inflection was all wrong. Sounded mono-tone. Sounded like one of those automated answering service like the customer service lines use. There were too many times where there would be
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He didn't have a lot to work w/, so I don't think he detracted too much.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Star Wars: Red Harvest?
I would cut the entire book, it just should never have been written as Star Wars book.
Any additional comments?
I made it to chapter 19 and just stopped, it was too bad to continue. Come on George, what were you thinking allowing them to publish this junk within your universe? I never thought it was necessary to read reviews on Star Wars novels, they’re just so fun and relaxing. Won’t make that mistake again. Can’t believe I spent this months credit on this horrible book.

Star Wars Zombies
An expanded universe story imagining what a zombie infection might look like in the Star Wars Universe. There are excellent set pieces. The author also experiments with interesting ideas. The narrator is excellent, changing his voice to match the horror of certain situations. The sound effects create an excellent immersion. Recommended.

Bonkers!
If you could sum up Star Wars: Red Harvest in three words, what would they be?
This.Is.Bonkers!
If you’ve listened to books by Joe Schreiber before, how does this one compare?
his is the prequel to Death Troopers and although this is potentially more bloody and gory, Death Troopers story and characters has ore emotional resonance. Still grimly entertaining though.
Have you listened to any of John Glover’s other performances? How does this one compare?
John Glover is a solid story teller and his performances infuses all the characters with life. He also has a great sense of drama...changing pitch and tone and pausing at all the right moments.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
You can if you can stand all the gore...
Any additional comments?
This is an absolute bonkers story! Included are a Jedi who can talk to plants, another Jedi who quotes Liam Neeson from Taken verbatim and a zombie tree(!)...but it is very entertaining. Don't put more into this then entertainment and you are in for some good storytime.

Star Wars: Red Harvest is a slippery book
I don't really know who reads these, but, I'll write this anyhow. Star Wars: Red Harvest feels a little too slippery for my liking. Maybe it was just me, but Schreiber introduces so many characters at the start of and throughout the novel, but a majority of them feel like white cardboard cut-outs with names written on their heads in marker pen and nothing else. A lot of the time, a named character will appear for a little bit, we learn next to nothing about them other than their name and a very basic idea about what they do, and that's about it. The characters lack the distinguished features of the original book; Death Troopers. And much of the depth of the original characters we find in Death Troopers is just gone. We are given very little to actually know and love about these characters, and I found myself more annoyed than anything when a character was killed off. I often found myself thinking "Was I supposed to care?". Because, frankly, I didn't. tl; dr The characters are hard to love, because we know next to nothing about them when they're killed off half a chapter later. One thing I will say, though, is that Schreiber still continues to deliver on the exquisitely terrifying ideas of the Black Wing virus in all it's horrible glory. The idea of Zombified Ton Tons had me rather uncomfortable. The gore was also spot on, yet again showing that you can still get a kick out of Star Wars with a bit more gore and spooky elements in it; such as Zombies. But, if you're here for the characters, don't bother. Pick this book up when you've got some change to spare and you feel like listening to some Star Wars Zombies for the sake of it. Because, trust me, the characters really are like bland cardboard cut-outs. But if you want some Star Wars zombies with a bit more substance, go and pick up Star Wars: Death Troopers. It's a superior book in more or less every single way.

I was very surprised how dark and gory the book was conspired to the other Star Wars books I've listened to, I liked this factor. The story plot is pretty much Star Wars meets resident evil.
It grips you at the Star, but then starts trails off towards end and becomes your usual zombie survival story, in my opinion. An enjoyable and different approach.

Entertaining but uninspired.
If you like Star Wars and/or zombie stories you'll enjoy this but it won't be your new favourite book. There are too many characters who all seem to be written as badasses until they all inevitably falter through stupid, uncharacteristic mistakes.
Despite that, still entertaining and worth your time.

Great listen!!
This author produces different work to the more usual Star Wars books, in this one almost all events are set in a single area - a Sith Academy with particularly bizarre machinations of its lord leading to ravening zombies going on the loose.
Perhaps a little akin to films like Alien and certainly more horror than traditional Star Wars adventure, there is much splatter, violence and gore. The sound effects add to the atmosphere and the Sith Academy area is well realised, you get a feel of the space and size of the environment, which the sound effects add to.
I was certainly giving this my full attention all the way through and never quite sure what would happen. In the 7 hours of this book a lot more happens than often in double that in other Star Wars books.
Recommended if you aren't squeamish and I think the author is a breath of fresh air in this franchise. He can do more of what he likes in this time period, in the 'latest' Fate of the Jedi books the author hasn't got so much freedom to operate.
Well worth a listen.

overall fantastic, just no talking plants please!
generally fantastic but the inclusion of the Murakami Orchid as a sentient being was completely unnecessary and often quite distracting.

Don’t buy
Having listened to most of the old republic audio books this is the worst. Narration sounds like it was done by a computer voice and the story is a bad cross between 1970’s zombie b film, halo flood with a bit of light sabre action. Next to stories like darth bane, revan, betrayed etc it just doesn’t stand up.

Not read very well.
It often sounded like it was read by a robot at times. the annoying sound affects missed the mark and truth of what was being read. Better to let the listener's imagination create the scene from the writers description.

the characters weren't very good
I didn't really like any of his characters, I felt like the protagonist was weak and had to wait to be rescued all the time , it was interesting knowing how the virus started , but death troopers is far better than this one , it makes you care about all the old and new characters.

The narrator lacks any dynamic to his reading.
Really enjoyed the book but seriously wished the narrator could convey more emotion in his reading. He made the characters really bland.
