In this gripping sequel to Star Wars: The Rising Storm, the light of the Jedi faces its darkest hour.

Time and again, the vicious raiders known as the Nihil have sought to bring the golden age of the High Republic to a fiery end. Time and again, the High Republic has emerged battered and weary, but victorious thank to its Jedi protectors - and there is no monument to their cause grander than the Starlight Beacon.

Hanging like a jewel in the Outer Rim, the Beacon embodies the High Republic at the apex of its aspirations: a hub of culture and knowledge, a bright torch against the darkness of the unknown, and an extended hand of welcome to the furthest reaches of the galaxy. As survivors and refugees flee the Nihil's attacks, the Beacon and its crew stand ready to shelter and heal.

The grateful Knights and Padawans of the Jedi Order stationed there finally have a chance to recover - from the pain of their injuries and the grief of their losses. But the storm they thought had passed still rages; they are simply caught in its eye. Marchion Ro, the true mastermind of the Nihil, is preparing his most daring attack yet - one designed to snuff out the light of the Jedi.

Not a conclusion but a huge cliffhanger

Honestly feel a little cheated having read all three main books and into the dark phase two of the high republic will not continue this story but go into the past, meaning it will take years before we will find out what actually happens.

This whole thing really ends on a cliffhanger with the main villain taking a backseat and doing nothing this entire book except make dreary I am so evil monolouges, his motivations for this whole thing is just moronic.

Marc Thompson as the narrator is terrific as always no complaints on his narration, which is probably why I finished this book having liked the other two main books in the series.

Less is more

This book has won me over on the high republic and I will be looking forward to the new novels. The light of the Jedi and the rising storm didn’t really do much for me but I enjoyed aspects of them. All the way through this book I was getting titanic vibes and it was genuinely exciting where it would go next. There was less main characters which I appreciated and far more casualties than I thought there would be (hat of for that one)
Grays writing was very good and knew how to bring tension, while having lighthearted conversations. Bel was definitely my favourite character, along with Elzar.

Good but not great

This was an enjoyable story but for me fell a little flat in some places. My least favourite of the 3 high republic books so far.

Earth's moon

I give this a one star review because on page 331 is a reference to "the moon." Not "a moon" or "Dantooine's moon" bit "the moon." I am 90% sure Claudia Gray is referring to Earth's moon. In a Star Wars book.

The best yet!

This book was incredible. Much like the other two main stories. Loads of action. Very good original Star Wars story. Cried my eyes out at the end! (Which is rare for a SW book). Couldn’t recommend it highly enough. If you’ve read the other material this is equally as good.

Claudia Gray does it again

as does The High Republic. Another installment of this superbly put together, heartwarming AND heartrending series.
It'll make you laugh, cry, panic & fear for EVERYONE at varying times.
Claudia Gray not only gets you inside the minds of some of our most beloved (new ish) Jedi but she does it in a scenario where all hell is breaking loose.
The sense of disquiet and doom that pervades throughout is pretty glorious tbh & the audiobook exacerbates ALL of that.
Another highly recommendable book and audiobook. Bravissimo to all involved.

Good addition to the series…

Takes it’s time to get going but a decent addition to the series. Marc Thompson is amazing as always and really brings the Star Wars universe to life. One quibble….clearly, references are made to events covered in the young adult / teen parts of the series. It’s annoying as I shouldn’t have to read kiddie stuff to get a proper context of character stories. I know this is a marketing trick Disney now employs to get people to consume everything, regardless of quality, for fear of missing out. That needs to stop. That aside…..I look forward to the next in the series of the main novels later this year.

Worst of the Nihil series so far

Honestly, couldn’t care less about any of the characters except Roe. Also, the entire story could have been 1/3 of the size if all the totally unnecessary filler was cut out. Fuck me, 16 hours wasted for a storyline that could be summarised in one sentence - ‘The Nihil blew up Starlight Beacon.’

High stakes story, but smaller scale

Marc Thompson provides another excellent narration. The story left me a bit disappointed by its smaller scale and not continuing many setups from the previous book, but it's still a must-read for a High Republic reader. It's very refreshing to see meaningful character development and even surprising character deaths in the book.

Unintentionally good

This reminds me of KOTOR II without the commentary on the failings of the Jedi.

The further you get into the story you come to hate the characters for their arrogance and you want to keep listening to find out how far they fall.

It could have done with a deeper look into the Force itself and why the events occurred on that level.

Who Survived, Hardly Anyone!

This was an excellent read. Another banger from the Queen of Star Wars, Claudia Gray!

I REALLY enjoyed it even though it was so so dark. It was very reminiscent of the Titanic but in space which was great. The stakes were there, and I couldn't put it down. It felt super fast-paced, and I was hooked with every twist and turn.

It's a book that takes so many hard decisions and feelings. Yet, even in such darkness, the Jedi try their best to do the right thing. It doesn't shy away from showing the fundamental flaws in some of our beloved characters, along with their strengths. Also, not to spoil things, but I love how big forgiveness and resolve is toward the end.
