Publisher's Summary

The starship Freedom is just a museum ship...until the aliens attack.

The starship Freedom was once a mighty warship. Today, she's a tourist attraction. The space wars ended long ago. The Freedom is now a flying museum; the tourists love it. The Changing of the Guard, the starfighter aerobatics, the starboard cannon salute...it's the best show in the galaxy.

James King commands the starship Freedom. He hates his job. He was a real soldier once, back when the Freedom was a real warship. He never imagined himself running a tourist trap. Right after Christmas, he plans to retire. Then, on Christmas day, the aliens attack. Horrifying aliens. Creatures of claws, fangs, and endless malice. Within hours, they devastate Earth's military. Millions die. So much for retirement.

The aliens spare the starship Freedom. After all, she's only a tourist attraction. But not to Commander King. He will get his beloved starship battle-ready. He will enter the fight. The Freedom will fly to war again!

Battlestar Galactica meets Starship Troopers in this sci-fi adventure from Daniel Arenson, the USA Today best-selling author of Earthrise.

What a disappointment

Terrible book. First half of the book is pointless background info. Filled with dumb heroes and villains. Even has a alien spider creature with mommy issues. The level of stupidity among the "heroes" took me out of the story repeatedly. And when you think this book couldn't get dumber with so many clichés, it does. Skip this book!

Pass

Wanted to like this but honestly couldn't get through the prologue. The narrator is a little too over the top for me, too much like a radio show dj than a narrator.

Also got really turned off by the author's complete misuse of certain scientific terms: Constantly mixes up things like intergalactic and interstellar. Has an entire good description at the very beginning about how humans have colonized the entire solar system but we don't have interstellar flight, then goes on to constantly refer to spacecraft as starships.

Aliens suddenly appear and a speaker explodes like its Galaxy Quest (this novel isn't meant to be humorous). Said aliens are spider shaped yet have faces that can do human expressions. So stereotypical. I just can't even...

1st of this genre

This book is absolutely fantastic! The first of the sci-fi genre I've ever read by this author, and I could not be happier with it. I cant wait for the sequels to come out so I can continue the story!

Escapism at its best

This is just the sort of bombastic escapism I needed! Over the top patriotism, larger than life characters who are impossibly loyal. Non-stop action, and satisfying conclusions. No, it’s not Shakespeare, but right now I don’t need Othello and his soliloquies, I need Commander King.

TOFTT!

CRAP is the best I can say. And that is an insult to fecal matter. This book is full of so many cliches, I thought it might have been written as a parody. Decent performance by Brewer, but loses it when he starts with the British accents. Not enough lipstick to get me in the same galaxy with this pig.

Not at all worth the price

This has been one of if not the worst book I have listened too in a very long time. It is as if written for children. Non stop catch phrases and buzz words one after another after another. Can you say Cliche’.

Starship Freedom

Good “villains”? ✅. Interesting heroes and main characters? ✅✅. Fascinating alien culture ✅✅✅. Dude? Why are you reading the reviews. This is great. If you like the tag line it doesn’t let you down.

Entertaining Story

I really enjoyed this. The storyline and characters easily caught my attention and kept me entertained all the way to the end. The way the story was handled from more than a single perspective was cleverly handled and worked well. The aliens are sufficiently grotesque and frightening to sustain a sense of impending doom for Earth. The narrator did his job well creating an atmosphere that kept me hooked. Hopefully, a second novel will soon follow.

Average

I'm not easily offended, but Mr.Arenson has managed it. I'm British so find the author's lack of knowledge ignorant. Google is a real thing, or try talking to a Brit and finding things out that way. Seriously? Princess Elizabeth III, no such title. There could be a Queen Elizabeth III, but not princess. Just one example. The story is generally ok, if a bit corny.

“The Starship Freedom” x 8,000,000

If anyone wasn’t aware the ships name is The Starship Freedom” nowhere in the first 3rd of the book is it referred to as just “Freedom” or “The Ship”. It may be later on but four hours in and I’m giving up.
Issues I have:
1, Obviously no research into military etiquette- Calling a Sgt Maj just Sgt is sure to get you in trouble regardless of rank.
2. No research into British Royal Family, - Dose the author honestly think they just ride around on horses besmirching everyone?
3. The population of Earth seems to have taken a dip IQ wise. On discovery of a possible alien the obvious reaction is to go and pick your daughter up and take her where the danger is forgetting all about the alien/ monster.
4. Little idea of military tactics/ strategy. Not sure you can claim to have won the war if the main protagonist is not only still in power but in power on the same planet you are on. ( How did they get back from Mars if they were defeated? Surely you as the winner would be able to stop them getting back to Earth……….maybe it explains it later but I honestly can’t face another minute of listening to this crap.
Feels like this book was written for and by pre teen. Probably would be lucky to get 3rd place in an under 12’s writing competition.
If it wasn’t free it would be going back for a refund.
Utter garbage.
Narration ok but defiantly some Dick Van Dyke British accents.

story is terrible, ideas taken from about a dozen different stories and films, thrown together then allowed to curdle, on the plus side made a new drinking game, everytime freedom was mentioned take a shot, atleast I forgot how bad this was for a bit

bit silly

A mishmash of ideas borrowed from independence day, alien etc - constant repetition of previously explained ideas - overpowered enemies that fail to deliver - ridiculous stereotyping

Worth a listen

Little bit OTT, but idea is sound basis for the book and possible series.

Narrator should work on his English accents as it makes the ruling class sound like entitled clowns.......then again maybe it is unintentionally appropriate given 2016, 2019 and 2022.
