At long last, The classic horror novel on Audible
- By Shieldslinger on 07-22-20
By: F. Paul Wilson
Publisher's Summary
A relentless alien bounty hunter encloses a Texas town under a dome to isolate, hunt, and kill its prey in "the ultimate horror novel" (The Philadelphia Inquirer).
Ever since the copper mine closed, the West Texas desert hellholes of Inferno and Bordertown have been slowly dying. Snake River isn't the only thing that divides them. Racism, gang wars, and anti-Mexican sentiment have turned the sun-scorched flatlands into a powder keg. If anything can unite them for now, at least in awe and wonder, it's the UFO that comes soaring out of the clouds like a flaming locomotive.
In the wake of the crash, a young alien named Daufin has arrived, too. A fugitive who has taken the form of a human, she knows the terror that awaits the inhabitants of this planet - because it is looking for her.
When Stinger, the monstrous alien bounty hunter, arrives, it's with a destructive fury and a devious plan to find Daufin - by entombing the residents in an impenetrable and inescapable dome. A relentless killing machine, Stinger has an infinite capacity for death and destruction. And over the next twenty-four hours, this town is going to bleed and burn. Now, the few remaining survivors must come together to protect Daufin, themselves, and the world beyond from total annihilation.
From the New York Times best-selling and Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Swan Song, Stingerwas called "one of the best suspense novels of recent years" by the Science Fiction Chronicle.

Alien Invasion F-U-N!
STINGER by Robert Mccammon is simply 80's horror F-U-N! With the entire book taking place over the course of one night, it's a great example of the horror being written during that time.
This is the story of a duel alien invasion-one alien crashed on earth due to a ship malfunction, (Daufin) and the other a bounty-hunter come to track the first one down, (Stinger). All of this takes place in the town of Inferno, in west Texas.
With a variety of small town characters putting aside their differences to unite against Stinger, the universal theme of good vs. evil comes into play. The shape-shifting abilities, (for lack of a better word), of Stinger allow it to take over host bodies and bend them to its will, making this a more interesting tale than it otherwise would have been. I think it also must have been quite challenging for the narrator of this audiobook.
The narration here took me a while to get used to, most especially during scenes where there was a lot of action. At first, I wasn't sure if I would make it through the entire way, (Stinger is 500+ pages long), but I did become accustomed to it and began to enjoy it thoroughly.
This is my third time reading STINGER and I think it's possible I might read it again in the future. Sure it's infused with a lot of 80's pop culture and lingo, (all the good looking girls are smash-foxes), but that was a special time for me, and for the horror genre, so I have no problem with that.
Also, I think it's possible that STINGER has influenced a lot of authors, (it's difficult not to see a connection to King's UNDER THE DOME), whether they were conscious of it or not.
STINGER was a lot of fun to listen to and Nick Sullivan did a fairly good job of bringing it all home in a fun way. If you're looking for many hours of listening enjoyment and alien invasion action, STINGER is the book for you!
*Thank you to the narrator for the free Audible edition in exchange for my honest feedback. This is it.*

Awesome Sci-fi!
Robert McCammon is one of my favorite authors, so I was very happy to see this one up on Audible! Inferno and Bordertown get two extraterrestrial visitors in the same day! Daufin is a fugitive who has taken on a human form to hide from her captors until she can find a way to escape. Stinger is an alien bounty hunter in search of the fugitive and will stop at nothing to find her. Stinger encloses the two neighboring towns in a forcefield bubble to prevent Daufin from escaping. Stinger then takes humans and kills them to make his own version of them. They are a deadly extension of Stinger. The two rival gangs of Inferno and Bordertown, as well as the townspeople, try to protect Daufin from Stinger to no avail.
This story is very fast paced! It can be a little gory at times, but not bad. It literally made me laugh out loud! Daufin trying to figure out our language was quite entertaining! The word she used to describe Stingers ship was hilarious! The narrator makes it even better with the way he pronounces the words like a child, or an alien, speaking them for the first time! Nick Sullivan did a great job with bringing this story to life!
Overall, I give the story and the narration 5 stars! I'd highly recommend this book to any McCammon fan, alien lovers, and lovers of great sci-fi!

Awesome aliens but too slow starting.
Swan Song was an amazing book, and I enjoyed every bit of the tale that Robert McCammon had to tell in it. So, when I was offered the chance to review another one of his books in audio format by the narrator, I eagerly said yes. And about 1 hour into listening to Stinger, I was wishing I hadn’t. Luckily that changed up a bit by the end of the book.
I don’t think that Stinger sucks. At its base, it’s an interesting story. But it did feel like everything was against me liking this book. The one potentially bad thing about listening to an audio book is that you have to ‘read’ slowly. In my case, it slows my reading speed down to less than half of what I normally read at, even when I push the speed of the playback up to 1.5x. So, if there’s any element of the narration or story that doesn’t work for me, it’s going to make it very difficult for me to stay engaged.
Nick Sullivan is, objectively, a good narrator. He differentiates the voices, speaks with passion when need be, but doesn’t over-dramatize things, and gives the story the attention it deserves. Unfortunately, the southern accents required due to the story setting set my teeth on edge. That, combined with the sometimes unpleasant voices (perfectly fitting the story just not my ears), and the obsession with the ‘gang war’ in the beginning of the book meant that Stinger was not an audio book I was eager to keep listening to. Also, although I’m sure I’m not wording this exactly right, I don’t feel as though his voice was necessarily the right one for the book.
There were elements of the book that I did like, though. Robert McCammon has created a great bad guy in Stinger. Every time he (it?) appears in a scene, it’s this weird mix of fascinating and disgusting. I never liked him, but his scenes were some of the most captivating in the book. Dolphin was neat as well. I liked watching ‘her’ understanding of humans evolve rapidly over the short period of time the book takes place in. Every time action was happening, I was interested in what was going on. Once the gangs thing in the beginning was dealt with, and the action I had been waiting for finally got going, I was able to enjoy the novel a little bit. The last fourth of the book, I actually really liked.
However, the characters were cardboard, the clichés were many, and the glacial pace at which things got moving meant that this 24-hour time period felt more like a six month siege to me. I think Stinger would have been a much more enjoyable read/listen if it was about 150 to 200 pages shorter.
One thing I did think repeatedly while listening to Stinger was that I was positive I would love it if it was adapted for film. McCammon has a way of painting visuals that you just know would translate into outright horrific images on screen.
I really went back and forth on what to rate this. It wasn’t a truly enjoyable experience for me, but a lot of the issues that I had weren’t necessarily things that I could ‘dock’ for. A lot of it felt like it was more my issues than anything wrong with the book. (Something I’m especially inclined to believe since I’m in the midst of Boy’s Life now and loving it.) I recommend McCammon on the whole, I just didn't care much for Stinger.

Don't miss this book!
Whether you are a McCammon fan or are new to his works, this is one of his best. Some of the more negative reviews stated that the book starts out too slowly. It does begin slowly in terms of action, but he is building the background of the characters and their relationships, all of which will come into play later on when the action begins in earnest. He is a good story teller and if you are patient you will enjoy the first part of the book from a human interest standpoint if nothing else.
In my opinion, the author needed to do all the background work in the beginning, because once the action and drama begin there is no time for back-stories. And once the almost non-stop action begins it is more meaningful because it is happening to people you know and understand.
I'm also surprised at the negative reviews for the narrator. As one positive reviewer pointed out, he handles a great number of characters with an amazing variety of accents, tones and inflections. I thought he did a great job.

Fantastically fun-scary,gory, beautifully narrated
I rarely write reviews, but this one has me chomping at the bit. I cannot believe I did not know about this book. It is such incredible fun for sci fi and horror fans. Small town Texas gets invaded by aliens. Need you know more? Well, if you do it should simply be this: McCammon is a gifted writer, able to convey a vast array of characters each with their own complexities. The book is quite long, but there is not a single moment that drags. From page one, I was hooked, and even though I had hours and hours to go, I was already anxious about the book ending.
Much of this has to do with the narrator--holy smokes. There are dozens of characters--children, men and women, latina and latino, old and young, human and alien. Sullivan can do it all, and in a way that gets across McCammon's wit and playfulness.
Outstanding in every way. I will be immediately checking out all of the other work by the author and narrator. Bravo.

loved it, listened almost nonstop. Stories in stories of lessons, learned and that need relearning. Mcammon is a great story teller. I don't like blood and gore but there is a place for it here. Disappointed
This book is best defined as ridiculous. The story is more no where the caliber of some of McCammon's other books. With the exception of strong language, this book is more fitting for young adults.
The narrator has a pleasant enough voice, but often reads as if he is reading to a classroom of wide eyed children. I did finish this book, but I'm not sure why.
if your looking for a book with even a little depth, pass this one.

A modern Classic
While listening to this book, I remembered why Robert R. McCammon is one of my all time favorite authors. "Stinger" was the first novel I ever read. That was back in the mid-eighties. I have been waiting for it to show up on audible for a few years. It is a great alien/monster invasion tale set in a depressed desert town. Good characters that you'll wish McCammon had wrote more about. The narrator does a good job bringing this tale to life.

I swear I recognise this voice...
I love the story, having originally bought the novel back in the late 1980s, and was looking forward to the audio book version.
What I wasn't prepared for, however, was Troy McClure from The Simpsons!!!
Now, I know Troy is voiced by Phil Hartman, so it's not a case if the same actor being used here - so it's just Nick Sullivan's overly sing-song and quite inappropriate reading.
Shame, really, because the tension and gravitas of the book is completely shattered by the performance.

Not one of Bob's best.
This is the kind of cliche riddled pot boiler that gave Bob the reputation of being the poor man's Stephen King. Nick Sullivan does the material no favours with a bored sounding performance which made for a very dreary audio experience. It's King's Under the Dome mixed up with The Thing and Predator and Alien etc. I love McCammon usually but this is his low point. Try his Matthew Corbett series if you want to read him at his best.

OK, but not one of McCammon's best
It's your standard, scary alien shtick. McCammon's storytelling and characters hold the thing together but, in the end, it's just a rather silly, unconvincing tale. The narrator does a pretty decent job. I did listen to the whole thing but, by about three quarters of the way in, I was starting to wonder whether it was worth it. Frankly, it wasn't. They Thirst is a better book, and Blue World better still.

struggled at times.
overall the book was ok but not McCammons best work. found the characters to be a bit cliche and their reactions to certain parts of the plot totally unbelievable. The Narrator was just a little hard for me to enjoy and although the character voices were good the narrative sounded a bit wooden and detached from the story at times.

Strong beginning then Tedious and exhausting.
This story starts well introducing the main characters but once the dome is in place the novel is just a series of fights and chases throughout one night. The residents of the town end up putting aside their differences to beat up the bad alien, and that’s it really. Oh and the guy gets the girl of course.
There is no reason whatsoever why someone can’t just shoot the alien by the way.
I found the narration tiring and skipped forward chunks to find nothing else had happened except another fight. There just isn’t enough story here and I have no idea why it’s so popular.
Swann song is immensely better.

Irritating American accent of the narrator
The narrator has a very irritating voice and that made the story cumbersome. I wouldn’t recommend it.
